    So many boats fell off their jack stands. In the U.K. Insurance companies insist on welded steel cradles for boats. So many cats flipped upside Down! There was a time when you always took you mast down for winter in UK. Looks like a lot of masts could have been saved if properly stored in a strong building......
    So hard to see, I feel for everyone.
    Thanks for posting.

    I had missed that footage last year. interesting how many mast were down on the sailing yachts and how many had fallen of their jack stands. In the UK the boat yards and probably insurance companies too make you use welded stands for the boat not just jack stands than can slip out. looks like the yards where they has wood props and nailed cross bracing held up ok but they still lost masts.I would like to see the same footage a year later.... cheers warren

    As a almost 20yr marine contractor I would like to offer just my opinion. If you are thinking of buying an old/damaged boat with intentions of fixing it up, DONT. 80% of you won’t make it. Just get a newer boat or one in better shape. Save your wallet and nerves a lot of pain.

    as a (non rich) yacht owner in the UK this is tragic. Bought an old jenaneau recently from essex and that cost enough to get good again with lots of work. so i feel extremely sorry for those yacht owners affected by the hurricane too. soo many demasted yachts. guess they got tangled up. some people may have taken a mortgage out to live on some of those yacht, some are likeley charter yachts. and yes dont have to be a rich person if you have a yacht granted most of theme on those islands may be but im sure theres just as many that arent. and the local islanders need those yachts and what goes with it for employment

      @nocoolname32 Před 6 lety

      i don't understand things like this. they had a few days notice that shit was going to get real. some of the boats weren't sea worthy but most would have been. to us land lubbers it seems like common sense to move your boat, pay someone to move your boat. if you can get a 3 day head start heading south you could be 120-150 miles away. why don't more people do this. this is in the "box" so hurricane insurance has got to be ungodly expensive. why not move?

    • @wysiwyg2006
      @wysiwyg2006 Před 6 lety

      3 days isnt enough. any boat yard can only move one boat at a time into the water or out with the cranes. plus not many places to go in 3 days within the vicinity im sure. what takes an hour to travel by car can take 4-5 hours by sail boat

    • @nocoolname32
      @nocoolname32 Před 6 lety +1

      if you think those people with the $750K cats still in the water in the marine, laying on their tops, couldn't get that boat 150 miles away or they couldn't get it out of the water and demasted in 3 days.........you're an underachiever. im calling the boat yard and offering them $10K to get my boat out of the water and demasted, or im paying jonny the islander $5K to provision and sail in the opposite direction of the storm. if im poor, im sailing my own boat. it's get out and sail for 3 days or lose my home, not a tough decision.

    • @tfb
      @tfb Před 6 lety +4

      In the best of conditions, a thirty foot monohull can expect between 90-120 miles traveled per day. And with the hurricane track unknown, can you get out of the storm radius in that timeframe. I’m guessing for many it was a risk choice of being in a semi sheltered area versus risk of being in the full brunt at sea...

If you are too cheap to pay for one that does offer coverage then you take these types of risks, but to make a blanket statement like that is factually wrong! Do you really think that all of the hundreds of yachts that were destroyed in Tortola that were managed by the Moorings, Sunsail, TMM etc., were uninsured?? You would have to be crazy!!

      Krionic - just poor little creeps that cheat their neighbors on real estate or stock swindles, retiring at 52 because they worked "so hard." Didn't have t thing handed to you, did you? Please go on about your boot straps and all the spin off good you do. Sweat shop owners "provide employment" in your world.

      Crazed Rock I know plenty of the rich and damn few did anything except parlay the wealth they inherited and the privilege resulting from the accident of their birth. These islands are populated by the descendants of poor souls forcible enslaved and now kept that way by the generous capitalist system. I'm less jealous than disgusted by the rich.

      haha! I'm STILL paying off my student loan. No. never had anything handed to me. Just "hard work". You should try it some time. It is rewarding and you don't have to vent on CZcams chat about how shitty your own life is. you only got one person blame, buddy: Yourself.
