    This was the first video game me and my siblings had as kids. We were really poor. We got a second hand Nintendo and this came with it. We didn't even have Mario. It took us about three years to beat this. We didn't have a clue what the Hell we were supposed to do after a certain point. Then one day my sister got a diving suit. We used it to go in the water and found more Goonies. Also, the jumping boots for that really high ledge. I remember trying and trying for hours to jump it. I eventually beat it. Couldn't tell you now how I did it, though.

    Big mistake is wasting keys on safes that are openly viewed in the rooms. They only give useless hints. You use the keys on safes that only appear after you"hit" with fist or hammer. Those safes give valuable items.

    I went from Golgo 13 to Goonies 2 with my weekend rentals. That was a period of NES mysteries for me. Early gaming conventions, B&W Xerox copies of instruction manuals; nothing made sense! I did beat the Goonies 2!!
    But the odd part of the story is:
    I beat Dragon Warrior on an, almost perfect, Battery Cart Rental Save and someone else beat the Goonies 2 on my Easy Save from a Cart at the same store. But when I re-rented the Goonies 2 - my Easy Save was re-named after the Save I used to beat Dragon Warrior from the same store. A Twist! Never resolved!

    I used to play this all the time. It was my go-to game because it was the only one that I could beat without a Game Genie.
    It reached a point where I could get through it without dying, until I got to the broken bridge, and that's only because it's the _only way_ to make it across without losing the boomerang. How the hell do they expect us to kill those chompy things on the bridge before they steal your boomerang???
    But I learned that if you fall off the bridge at just the right spots, you can spawn further along on the bridge. I have to do it twice to make it all the way across, but it's _worth it_ to not lose that boomerang!

    This is honestly one of my favorite games. It was the game I got Christmas 87 along with My NES and Mario/Duck Hunt. It kept me entertained for years. Back then, when we only had a handful of games to play, this game was perfect, because it takes a long time to explore every nook and cranny. Nowadays it doesn't hold up quite as well to other NES games because we have so many other games to choose from. Games that are much more straightforward. It takes time, but it's not so cryptic that you need a strategy guide. This game takes time to learn how to navigate through the corridor system and to understand the front and back sides of the map, but once you figure it out, it's not that hard.
    Thanks for the playthrough of this Mike. I enjoyed it!

    • @yorgle11
      @yorgle11 Před 5 lety +1

      It's very much like Metroid, yes. Same genre. Games like this were what made the NES library revolutionary ~1987 IMO.
      The main difference vs Metroid is probably the 3D rooms in this game that people sometimes get annoyed with. But I find the platforming and combat in this game to be more enjoyable than Metroid, and the varied environments were much more fascinating to the imagination IMO.
      I've never understood why this genre is called "Metroidvania" though. Castlevania is a linear stage-based action game with difficult platforming - I'd compare it closely to Ninja Gaiden but not Metroid. Castlevania 2 is an exception but they didn't stick to that formula (I wish they had).

    • @CenturianEagle
      @CenturianEagle Před 5 lety +1

      yorgle11 it is strange that they call it that considering what you said- the Original castlevania was linear. It was only the later castlevanias that did the whole Metroid like map/level design. Games like symphony of the night and all the DS and GBA ones. Yeah the 3d rooms is why I mentioned that this game has a bit of shadowgate mixed in. Shadowgate was all 3d rooms like that. It’s a cool idea to mix game styles like that. I suppose they call them metroidvanias (despite only later castlevania’s fitting into that style) is that they for instance might want to say a game is in a genre like Metroid, but don’t want the impression to be that the genre would have to be limited to only projectile attacks- it could also have melee attacks like castlevania. That’s just a theory though. There’s a lot of cool games out now that have the nes style. Axiom verge which is A LOT like Metroid, but very good, shovel knight, which I haven’t played; but looks awesome regardless, the messenger, which is like ninja gaiden, bloodstained:curse of the moon which is like original castlevanias and bloodstained:ritual of the night which isn’t out yet but is going to be a lot like symphony of the night, hence the name. Do you like any of those ?

    • @yorgle11
      @yorgle11 Před 5 lety +1

      I agree with your theory that simply calling these type of games "Metroid-like" could give an overly narrow impression of what kinds of games they are. Offhand I'm not sure what other game name should have been mixed with it - I like Goonies 2 but those words don't mix well. Metries? Goonoid?
      Rygar- Metgar? Ryoid? I guess "Metroidvania" sounds better.
      There's also the fact that both Metroid and Castlevania were ongoing franchises - and that's probably the best reason. They were both relevant when the term was coined.
      It's probably stranger to me than most people because I never played the later Castlevanias so I don't think of it in that genre except for CV2.
      I really should play Symphony of the Night. I'm only vaguely familiar with it but I know everybody loves it. I drifted from consoles over to PCs by the mid-90s and missed that game. In fact I think the "newest" Castlevania I've played is Bloodlines.
      I'm not familiar with the newer games you mentioned - I don't keep up with modern games very much. These 2D adventure games are some of my favorites, and there's still a ton I haven't played from the NES/Genesis/etc.
      When I play modern (3D-era) games it's usually been Bethesda RPGs, driving games, or sometimes Rocket League. Some younger relatives have modern Nintendo consoles and I have sometimes enjoyed playing Switch/etc games with them.
      I find I don't seem to enjoy modern 2D platforming type games as much as I do on 80s-90s systems. I have a few theories as to why: Overly complex control schemes, maybe the controllers themselves, display lag, and excessively animated graphics that can cause a laggy feel.
      There's also some things I don't like about modern game design practices, but I've rambled more than enough. :)
      I will make note of the games you mentioned - if they are on Steam for PCs then I might be interested.

    • @CenturianEagle
      @CenturianEagle Před 5 lety

      yorgle11 yeah, the fact that they’re both very popular franchises and easy to recall are definitely big factors for the term “Metroidvania” no doubt. That’s interesting you don’t like the modern retro type games. I really do, but everyone’s different I suppose. Shovel knight seems probably the most retro out of the games I mentioned, then maybe bloodstained curse of the moon which draws a lot of inspiration from castlevania, particularly the third NES one where you have different characters. The messenger and axiom verge would be next on that list, both those games can seem more modern-y at times, the messenger I think even has it so that the second half of the game has better graphics than the first from what I remember. Like... I think the first half is like NES graphics and the second half is like SNES. But I don’t remember for certain, I’ve never played that one. Axiom verge is really awesome though, the fact that they’re more modern like I said doesn’t really bother me, but anyway, I just figured I’d describe them a little better for ya just in case you’re interested in playing any. I feel like out of all those modern retro style games, there has to be some that you might like, and they’re very awesome so I hope you get to experience once that you like one of these days. Anyway, you definitely should play SOTN, it’s a great game, so maybe that should take priority seeing as you’re already slightly interested in it. And then out of the other games, shovel knight I think you might like. Haha oh and don’t worry about rambling, I’ve been more rambling if anything 😅🤣 sorry for the long response

He doesn't want to spend the time to understand how the controls work, he just expects to pick it up and the game match the expectations of what's in his head. Whose fault it that? Certainly not the game.
      Then he skips past holes in the ceiling and instead of even trying to go check it out he skips right past it then says he has no idea where to go. How the f**k can someone who has such a great memory to remember sub-item locations in games like Ninja Gaiden, not remember simple area connectivity?
      The ladders... Yeah, easy explanation. You're walking up to the ladder! Come on man... seriously... You know the guy in the lower left corner walking in place? It's there for a reason lol
      I don't think any video of Mike's playthroughs have every annoyed me, but this one actually is. Nearly three hours in and I don't know I can stand more bitching at the game for player hangups. and yes I've beaten it multiple times (as a kid nonetheless).

    Why doesn't he just methodically hit shit in the rooms? Just make a pattern, left, top, right, bottom, middle - do the fist then the hammer or vice versa and just mark down when you covered a room already and the ones you need to go back to.

    It's a pretty easy game once you can figure out where everything is, it was one of the very first games I owned when I was 8. I was able to beat it by the time I was 10, without Nintendo Power, and the internet. As an adult I can beat the game within an hour.

    This was the first game I ever finished, and it was then I realized I would dedicate my youth to beating every game that crossed my path. Unhealthy, obsessed....who cares. It taught me a valuable lesson. To quote George McFly, "If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything."

    This game is unquestionably NES, it has so many elements from other NES games. I got Roger Rabbit and Friday the 13th vibes, and musically Zelda. Something about the look as well.
    I feel it's probably not such a bad game, if you had that back then it would have given you your moneys worth, a long drawn out adventure, exploration etc.. I didn't really understand the navigation/map system watching this, but i'm sure you can work it out playing it eventually, maybe the manual is more clear about it, drawing a map as well would probably help. It seems like its not supposed to be a game you beat in an afternoon, the cryptic side of things is something that makes it longer and more of a challenge. Zelda was a bit like this as well, you just thrown in there with no direction, you wander around freely and eventually figure it all out.

    So I Find it frustrating to watch someone else play a game I know well, cause people always do it different. But it’s awesome to watch you work a game out that I’ve owned and always has frustrated me.

    Watching from the future, didn't see this mentioned in your comments but there's a way to tell which way to go in the rooms based on which way you're facing. In the bottom left you will see your character either facing you/the screen or facing away from the screen. This helps you orient yourself if you are going up/into the door or down/through the door you're facing. It's kind of cryptic like you say, but once you figure it out it makes the doors and duel maps much easier to navigate.
    Very impressed you beat this without a map! I used the Nintendo Players Guide growing up it had a really detailed map that helped a lot. Not a tough game but frustrating with the map and hidden safes.
