How To Relic Guitar Knobs

- In this video you'll learn exactly how to relic your guitar volume and tone knobs to make them look aged.
I have a Strat copy that I've owned since the 80's. A few years ago I changed the volume and tone controls and lately I've been noticing just how white they look when compared to the rest of the guitar - particularly the cream pickup covers for my Fender Vintage Noiseless pickups.
So I spent a few hours on Google figuring out how to speed up the aging process!
In this video I show you what I've learnt and you can watch me as I go through each step of the relic process.
I'm happy with the results.
Hope you enjoy the video.

Thanks for watching.
And yes, that's a Regent Sounds t-shirt. I bought it when I was on holiday in London in 2017. Man, I miss that city. - Hudba
I discovered a few years ago making the coffee mixture and putting it on my grey hair restores it to the natural blonde color it was before it went grey.
What i found works quite well for scuffing the plastics up is the pan cleaning pad on those 2-sided dish washing sponges. It‘s soft enough to wrap around even small pieces, and it’s a lot less aggressive than most sanding pads or especially sandpaper. And cheap!
Thanks for the tip. I'm so glad people are replying with their tips and ideas. I'm actually tempted to buy a few packs of knobs and test different methods on them.
@@strictlyguitar Also, yesterday I tried out aging plastics-that would not react to tea and coffee-the brutal way: with a UV-C lamp (so basically _actually_ aging the plastics, just very accelerated). And success! I wrote a bit about it here: www.strat-talk.com/threads/aging-pickup-covers-once-again--a-little-experience-report.565641/
Thanks friend. Im going to do this to some pickup covers and knobs.
Thank you for this video. I have indeed used one of those sponges with a green sanding side and I am going to leave my Les Paul Gold Bell knobs in the tea and coffee deposit mixture for 4 days, see what happens. I will let you know. Greetings from Holland
And how did it go?
@@ferrykuijen1902 Didn't notice much difference before and after really.. perhaps they are too dark to notice the difference.
@@the_fleeing_dutchman ah I understand! Yeah that could be a very decent reason
Thanks for the quick reply btw💪🏻

Good video
I found using tea bags the best good video👍
Awesome video. What song is that?
If you do the tumeric method just be careful how long you have them soaking. I did an hours time and they came out a dark yellow... just a heads up.
How can I make that dark yellow? I want to darken my pickups frames, they are already beige but the details on my guitar are this dark yellow
@@godcaoss let the pieces soak for over 30 mins in the tumeric solution and that should have you covered. My strat pick up covers got very yellow, wasn't what I was looking for. Maybe test something first to make sure its what ya want. Hope it works out
i wish i saw ur comment about 10 minutes ago, then i may have avoided the spice in question, my knobs now look like they would glow in the dark ! :)
coffee and turmeric does the job in about an hour or two (no sanding that's crazy)
For real?
Doesnt coffee wear off?
you can by cream knobs for less than the coffee costs
@@phililpb when I did it I was restoring my first guitar I've had since I was a kid and wanted to keep as many of the original parts as I could. It's not like you have to buy starbucks tho, I just cut open a K-cup I had just used already.
In my experience, Turmeric did not last. Im trying coffee next.
Do you suppose that for acoustic tuner buttons one could wrap the machine housings in plastic, tape it closed, and follow the same steps on the buttons?
You'd have to make sure nothing could penetrate the housing to be safe. Could you mount the tuners on a small plank of wood and place it so you dip the buttons only in the coffee?
Nes coffee or instant coffe - 60 min 🥳
I have a Squier I use on stage, I managed a very authentic aged appearance (pickup covers, switch-tip and knobs) using a coffee mug, two heaped tablespoons of finely ground turmeric. Fill the mug, dump the turmeric in with the parts, and microwave for 50 seconds at 800W, stir and enjoy. Coffee method achieved nothing for me.
48 hours in coffee
Caffeinated or decaffeinated?
Now we're talking! Maybe we should look at the country of origin next!
coffee did noting for mine, wasted 4 pods.. though ive heard instant works better.. tumeric fades off very quickly too
I put three brand new white knobs in a cup of tea with two bags of breakfast tea and within 5 minutes they were a cream color. I don’t think u need to do it for days on end. Just fyi
It's hard to know, isn't it. If I did it again, I'd probably do it for less time. Thanks for the tip.
I was really surprised. I figured tea would take much longer to stain so I wanted to check after 5 minutes and I was utterly surprised. I didn’t need it too relic’d so thought I should try a shorter time and it honestly over vintages them by a few color tones. Oh well, it’ll do for now! Haha
@@EMPTYKProductions I'll have to do a new video - Earl Grey or English Breakfast? Which tea gives the 'vintage' look!
Love it! Do it. Would be fun to watch
It depends a lot on the type of plastic. Some seem to be mostly unaffected by most stuff you throw at them.
That did nothing
