Looking for all of the places we ate in Ipoh? Here's a map! puredetour.com/post/our-favourite-restaurants-and-dishes-in-ipoh-malaysia/
What you just had ( stuffed thingy) is called yeong liu. They are basically made from veg slices stuffed with fish paste. Like the one you held up with your chopsticks is actually a slice of bitter gourd filled with fish paste. The darker one is a brinjal (eggplant) slice stuffed with fish paste and pan fried. The crunchy thingy you had is known as "chow fu pei" which is actually a pirce of beancurd skin filled with a little fish paste and deep fried. Glad you both enjoyed the food.
This is so helpful. Thank you for taking the time to explain. The nice lady at the Kopitiam explained them all to us when she served them, but because there were to many things, we had forgotten most of it by the time we started eating 😂
Hakka Yong tau fu is basically stuffed vegetables, tofu skin, tofu with fish paste with minced pork. First fried then steep in broth.
Yeah. BItter gourd. I love it. You guys are really advanced with your Malaysian food level.
Thanks for the tour of Ipoh, it definitely looks like it's worth putting on our must see locations in SE Asia...Cheers
Hey Rob! If you like to eat like we do, I'd definitely put it on the list! Also one of the friendliest towns we've visited in our travels yet, so worth a visit!
You've done it again!! Confirmed your status as savvyiest vloggers of the ms/sg arena!!!
Hey Eric! Good to see you here & thanks so much for your nice comment. As you can tell we're really enjoying our time here!
That food galore was fantastic
Seriously, it was insanely good 😊
I am so tickled to watch you enjoying my hometown's wonderful food offerings. So jealous! Cheers...
Thank you so much, Alan!
👍🙌wow it was not fair to watch this whilst I'm hungry 😂 but everything just looks absolutely scrumptious 🙌👍👏👏👏
Right? Ipoh just kept overwhelming us with deliciousness!
it is surely an authentic nasi lemak when the sambal is spicy and make your ears red! my mouth is watering seing you guys having it. hahah
We've been in Malaysia for almost 4 months now, and this was the BEST nasi lemak we've had yet. Delicious!
"Eating blindly opens your tummy eyes"...your fortune cookie for today.
Thus ends your Malaysian Cantonese food foray, onto Malaysian Hokkien adventure.
"Tummy eyes", lol. That's a fun way to put it. Often we have no idea what we're getting. If we see a bunch of locals eating somewhere, we'll just pop in and ask to have what they're having. It's so much fun to try new food isn't it?
Fantastic video!! Some of the best food I have ever seen! Love you guys!
Hey Tyson. Thanks so much, comments like this really make our day, we appreciate it. Lots more Malaysian food videos coming up, hope you like them!
Welcome to Ipoh the honetown of Michelle Yeoh.
Thank you! And congrats to Michelle on her recent win! Well deserved.
*WELCOME TO MALAYSIA TRULY ASIA GOOD FOODS ENJOYED*
🇲🇾❤️💝💖💓🥰😍💓💞💗💕💖💝❤️🇲🇾
Malaysia has some of the best food in the entire world
Thanks for sharing this wonderful video n for showing your explorations in Ipoh.
Hi Yasin! thanks for watching and for your nice comments ❤
@@PureDetour Thank u. 😁
Another great video!
Hi Suay! Thanks so much 🙏❤
We called that rotating tray lazy Susan. We have a great food in Malaysia. Have a great time
Correct
We call it that too! But usually it's a smaller thing in your cabinet so you can reach things from the back. Rotating table is convenient when you order too much food! 😂
Hi guys, so good to see you enjoying the Ipoh food. Thats My favourite Hakka noodle shop. BTW you guys came to Hairguru for a hairtrim . Great job.❤
Hi! Yes, Hair Guru in Ipoh was amazing! We loved our haircuts and the service was amazing. Thanks so much for watching ❤
Wow Great video. Have a nice day! I really enjoy watching it! Thanks for sharing.
HI Jay! Thanks so much for the nice comment. Glad you liked it and have an awesome day to you too!
Sticky beans? Johnny Tillotson's favourite, years and years ago!!!
Really? How do you know that???
@Pure Detour Johnny used to perform here yearly and regularly years ago. The made special mention of it on one of his earliest trips.
Happy to have found your channel. I love Malaysian food; not enough people realize how yummy it is:)
100$ agreed.
Hello 🤗🤩👋 Pure Detour good evening 🌄🌷🌻 and Happy Chinese New Year 💗💗💗
Hello! Happy New Year to you too! 🎊 🎉
Damn am I missing Malaysian food after watching all ur food video. Migrated to Sweden but visits Malaysia about once every 2 to 3 years for a month while in Penang, I would eat about 5000 cal of food per day (eat 5 meals a day). When I was a teenager, would ride around the Island looking for the best of each type of dishes. Malaysian especially Penangites live to eat, not eat to live! Keep up with ur great channel....happy yumming!!
Thank you so much. Malaysian food may have been my biggest surprise in all of my travels. Highly underrated and extremely delicious
hi omg ur video made hungry again
Hahaha, we're always hungry, it's why we make these videos
Sin hup kee you won't disappointed best in town👍🏻
Yes! We found them quite by accident and were so impressed! Would recommend Sin Hup Kee to anyone who loves food! And they have great service and a beautiful restaurant
Some of those deep fried thingi have Jicama (is a local vegs very crunchy and juicy type most of the time make stuffing for Popiah)
Thanks so much for letting us know. A few others have also told us this
Lots of good local FOOD in Malaysia,go for it.👍👌
Thank you!🙏
Thank you for putting link to google map on each restaurant you guys visited. I'm going to Ipoh towards end of the month after I arrived for annual leave as an expat abroad.
No doubt about that, Iris
The "cucur udang" at Nellis is 1 of the best snack / comfort food . Easily can finish off 1 plate of these fritter🤩
@Wong Warren, I’m pretty sure I could eat two of these plates by myself.
@@PureDetour yes, you're right. It is so delectable 👍🤩 Enjoy your trip and have a lovely stay in Ipoh 👍
Try also keropok lekor 👍
Don't think we've tried that yet! Will keep our eyes open for sure
The rotating mid section is called 'lazy Susan' for chinese round table.
Yes! so easy, no passing dishes across the table!
Welcome
Thank you so much!
That nasi lemak looks good
Best nasi lemak we have had in Malaysia so far
@@PureDetour I can tell by looking at it
Nice 🆒🤙
Thanks! 😁
Its bitter gourd!! Hakka normally like it dry style, fir the Cantonese, its mainly wet base both a cintrasting style between them. You hit it spot on with Birch's assassination.
I would love to eat that poppiah and apam balik 👍👍👍
😋
try pamelo fruit limau bali at tambun ipoh. near sunway lost world
Ooooh, i love pamelo!
You fell in love with Ipoh, didn't you!
We did! The food is amazing, the people were so welcoming. We actually just sent some friends there, told them they can't miss it on a trip to Malaysia!
Those side dishes with the noodle is Yong tau fu
Ahhh, thanks so much. We weren't sure.
16:28 The stink will come much later, like when you need to use the bathroom 🤣🤣 the beans are apparently good for the kidney
Hahaha. We learned this from experience 😅😅😅
Wow First time seeing white Americans really enjoying M'sian food
Will you be back in the near future for the food again.
Is it really the first time? I'm so surprised because it seems to us like the food is so great that everyone would love it so much! And yes we will 100% have to visit again. It's such a beautiful country with lovely people and there is still so many places we haven't seen!
Hi, the white noodles you had are flat noodles made from rice flour. The word "fun" in the name "kai si hor fun" has the same sound as the word "fun" in English. Enjoy :)
Thanks for the correction. We learned that after we had filmed it, so we're a bit embarrassed by the mispronunciation, but hope we'll be forgiven as many of these foods are new to us. We're learning so many new words and trying our best to say them all correctly!
@@PureDetour Hey no worries. These things happen to everyone of us ni our encounters with new cultures all the time. Hv fun.
The curly veg is bitter gourd. In USA I think it's called bitter melon. Good for diabetes.
In Penang, just follow d locals who go on motorbikes n containers. No need advice! 😄
That's a good tip! And we really liked the bitter gourd, mmm
USA bitter gourd it's greener More bitter type🤭 here more lighter good for stuffed bitter gourd
There is the small very bitter type? Is that the same? Indian stalls stir fry with turmeric.
@@maocat6606 de greener type they fry longer to tone down bitterness 🤭
Prawn fritters - cucur udang
MMMMMMMM. We've had them at some other places, but the place in this video, Nelli's was the best!
This video randomly showed up in my feed today. Most probably because I was watching some Singapore videos. Is this place anywhere near Singapore? I’ve been to Singapore and the dishes look a lot like the ones in Singapore
It's in Malaysia so it's not too far from Singapore. The probably look. Singaporean and Malaysian Chinese food isn't too far off from each other and Ipoh is a heavily Chinese populated area.
Petai / Stinky Beans makes me hungry
Hahahaha. They are delicious
The white bun is Mantou to dip
Yes! We love mantou. We had it for our first time with chili crab in Singapore! yum
please can you go to okinawa japan
Hi! Funny you mention that, we are actually thinking about visiting Japan soon. Can you reach out to us privately on Facebook or Instagram (our username on both is Pure Detour) to let us know what you think we should do and eat in Okinawa? We'd love to hear from someone local or someone who has been there before to give us the inside tips!
Stinky beans are stinky when it comes out from you. Lol
Indeed. But very tasty going in😂
Ya, from what I remember James Birch was British Resident (Advisor) to the Sultan.
I guess he upset the locals. The plotters held a seance in which they killed a giant Atlas Moth.
James Birch was killed with a spear while he bathe in a river.
I can't guarantee the accuracy of this account.
Just by-the- by ....
Thanks for sharing. Really interesting history in this region. And so many details get lost to time. We'll probably never know the whole story, but it's all fascinating!
Is bittergourd stuffed with fish patti
Yes! And it's really delicious, thanks for letting us know
Bitter gourd
Yes, that's right!
That "tangy" vegetable is a bittergourd
Yes it is! Took us a bit to figure it out, lol
@puredetour it's an acquired taste. Most ppl dont like it. Chinese believes of ita cooling property, good to cool the body down especially during the hot seasons.
it is called stinky beans because if you eat enough of if you will know when you pee hehehe
This was a discovery. Similar to asparagus in that effect. But they're tasty and worth it!
Cantonese food is the best in china
Delicious. One day I want to go to China to try all the Chinese cuisines. Cantonese is your fave? What other regions have great food?
@@PureDetour in the past till now Cantonese region guangdong has the best or famous food.
stinky beans very stinky after uric acid but it is good
Tasty now, stinky later, lol
Many Hakka girls prefer Tamil Indian boys!
The rich man bought the whole street for his mistress not a house on that street.
Oh my, how generous of him. What else was on the street aside from her house that came with the gift?
@@PureDetour the street was purchased for his mistress so that the mistress can collect rental by renting out the shop lots.
Omg stink beans, not for me
You don't like? I was nervous to try, but was really surprised by how tasty they were
