  • Welcome to What Bike Next? Episode 4 - our series in which Michael Mann and Simon Hargreaves help #BikeSocial Members find their next #motorbike.
In this episode, Marc Broome, a civil servent from Blackpool, is after a winter hack and asks Michael and Simon for help finding his perfect next bike. They select a #motorcycle each that they think will hit the spot. Then there's a third option, a mystery bike, selected by Superbike Factory's sales expert. But will Marc end up with one of these three, or go his own way?
Thank you to our super sponsor, Pirelli for the support: www.pirelli.com/tyres/en-gb/m...

Nice to see a real bloke with a modest budget looking for fun and practicality all year round. This series could easily become "I've got £12k looking for a sunshine toy" like most dealerships up and down the country (although usually more PCP normally). The Hornet is a cracking bike for his needs, Honda reliability and build quality for the shitty weather, being a 600 cheap to tax too.

Great series you have here, I'm always trying to guess the bikes you've chosen before hand. Honda Hornet a fantastic option, and of course there's the less popular 900 version too! Personally I'd have thrown in a couple of V-twins into the mix with Suzuki's V-Strom 1000 or SV 1000 for the low down torque for commuting plus you can rev them and get a bit more sporty if you like.

    • @Hutchie2112

I was sure there would be a suzuki v twin in there, and for proper winter riding, in the mankiest weather, the 650 with abs can be a good laugh, dont need loads of power on slippy muddy wet cold dark winter roads.

I walked through the showroom and came to Honda section. I spotted a Honda CB1000r plus with panniers. I bought it straight away. This is the point, once you are used to a make of bike their is something about it so familiar even though they are different in ergonomics. I had it delivered and it has brought a massive smile to my face. Great show thank you.

Cheap reliable commuter, I jump instantly to a Versys 650. Also the SV650 and for something a bit larger a Honda ST1100. The Versys and the SV650 have some windscreen and nice bag options if he needs to take some stuff to work or wants to go for weekend getaway. They also offer adequate power for his commute and are both rock solid in terms of reliability. The Honda ST1100 has built in protection and hard bags making great for commuting and light touring. Also, it is a bit sportier and offers more power which might be preferable coming off the Fireblade. While the Honda might be a budget stretcher the other two should offer no trouble coming in sub 3000 quid. Lets see what the boys put on offer. Didn't go with all liter bikes for commuting, thought the 650s would be enough and better on gas. Would never have thought of the Hornet, interesting choice. Doesn't really strike me as a commuter bike though.

Hornet is light and nimble, pair that with the direct feeling of carburated engine and you get a mega fun bike. I owned a 2006 one for 2 years sold it and bought a 2013 Hornet, tho it's a better newer bike still doesn't have that feeling like the old model did, the newer the bike is the more artificial it feels and even 200HP can't help it.
No matter the bike i will own in the future i plan on buying an old but low milage Hornet and keep it as long as i can.

I use the GSXR most of the time for everything, commuting, shopping ride outs etc. But when I get on that inline 4 650 and ride it like I stole it, it's such a good road bike. And you know when you've hit triple digits, which is good for keeping that precious fun licence. I sadisticly even like the lack of gear indicator, it's a pure experience and you ride it by feel. Hi. It seemed like you were trying to talk him out of the hornet, bet the salesperson loved that. I had one of these (1999 model) and absolutely loved it...but I'd thoroughly recommend putting a set of Racetech gold valves in the forks like I did. They were worth their weight in gold, transforming the bike into a weapon. I did the superbike course on this around Eastern Creek raceway in Sydney. Bloody awesome!

Neither of us could believe our ears when we asked him how his ride went, we both rather obviously thought our choices were far more suitable! Thansk for the tip too - I'll pass it on.
      Cheers, Michael

I paid £1000 for my "winter hack" 18 months ago, and it came with free road tax, exemption from MOT and London ULEZ charges, and cheap classic insurance. It's a 1980 Suzuki GS550L, simple, reliable and fun to ride.

I tend to struggle with the logic of buying an ‘old’ winter hack for this kind of money.
£3k for a bike that’s going to be pretty much worthless after 3-years riding suggests you’re happy to write that sum off. In which case, you’re better off going PCP on a new bike. You don’t own it, don’t have to be emotionally attached, get the benefit of a warranty, new bike reliability, and the most modern safety features that would make all year round riding a more enjoyable experience.
I do this with a Tracer 9 GT (and have done for the last two iterations), which leaves my other bikes for Sunday best.

Bought a 2009 CB1000R for £2800 recently (with topbox fitted) - would be a good choice here as my buying priorities are similar to Marc's 👍👍

I had the 2002 Hornet 600 FS for nearly 20 years till it was stolen last year. I would recommend this bike to anyone who likes riding. It became a part of me after riding it for so long. I knew all its little foibles and quirks and yes, it was quite difficult to start, particularly in cold weather. But some Iridium plugs and a good blast of choke solved that. And they handle like they're on rails, in most weathers. Great bike, totally miss it, sob sob.............

This is an enjoyable series since I’m also looking for a new bike. One remark: you never mention if the bike has ABS or not. Nowadays I would never ride a bike without ABS, for me it’s a no go!

I have been ridding japanese bikes since I was 14 years old .
I bought my first non japanese bike at the age of 50 .
I immediately found that it was the bike that gave me the most pleasur,e.
This being said , I unfortunately also found out it was the less reliable and the most expensive to maintain.
Luckily , there are forums that helped me a lot to be able to repair it at very low costs .
I do honestly believe BMW s are amongst the greatest bikes , but they are amongst the most costly if you want to clock 100 s 1000 miles with them.
    I am riding a R 1200 R 90 th anniversary.
    Really love this bike ..
If you have a limited budget and can't fix it yourself, stay away from them .
But that s just me ..

I've owned a 1200 Bandit , dynojetted,, 1200S Bandit, FZS1000 and Hornet 900. Had an Ohlins and the jets done on the Fazer and it was a rocketship, amazing touring bike too. Rear wheel bearings go at 20k miles. Best bike I ever owned. The Hornet was a better bike than the Bandits, smoother, better build quality, and more rideable.

interesting video about a proper real world price bracket. New bike prices these days are crazy.
