A Scary Island That Has Been Keeping a Secret for 80 Years

  • Our story begins in the Tasman Sea, the body of water between Australia and New Zealand. It’s exactly here where the Lord Howe Island Group had been lying unperturbed until 1788. That year changed everything in the history of this lost place as British lieutenant Henry Lidgbird Ball discovered the central island of this group as he was on his way to nearby Norfolk Island. Having fulfilled his mission, Ball was heading home when he decided to claim a newly-uncovered territory for his country. At that time, nobody could’ve imagined the surprises this island would have in store for people decades later!
After Ball’s discovery, permanent settlements had already been established on the main island by 1834. Despite being just 6.2 miles long, Lord Howe Island represented (and still represents) an idyllic picture of a tropical paradise. As for the rest of the islands belonging to this group, they were mostly rocky volcanic landmasses.

At one time Lord Howe also had the rarest bird on Earth, the Lord Howe Island Woodhen, with only 20 individuals left due to feral cats and pigs. The pigs and cats were removed and a breeding program was started. Happy to say the Island now has hundreds of Woodhens (natural population is limited because they are territorial).

From the North San Francisco bay inland, I recall an insect that was in great numbers in the 70's . They were all-black, looked like a hornet or wasp in body shape, but had 2 windows on each side at the beginning of the abdominal region, I called them ,"Window-backed bugs" but I think they were either related to some wasp or similar species, although it didn't sting. I found one being attacked on the way home once by a yellow jacket. I saved it, and a long story short of mending it's wings with a like- type brother of his I found in the entry way of my house, which transpired, I helped it fly off again once I gave it it's friend's transplanted new wings, fixing them to it's wing stubs with some strong adhesive. It flew-off! I was a kid when I did that. But after a handful of years, I never ever saw them again. I blame it on the tree spraying company that advertised to people with oak trees on their property to rid themselves of "Bugs"..I found many dead birds around that time, too. Does anyone know what insect I'm speaking of? I guess I should look it up, come to think of it. But do tell.

Here in Germany, there is a cave underneath a little mountain in Bad Segeberg. This cave is the biggest winter-home for bats in North Europe and hosts about 30.000 bats each year. In this cave lives a tiny bug, about 5 mm long, and there are only about 10.000. Of them they are called Choleva lederiana holsatica and are the rarest bugs. Breeding in a lab didn't work so far.

I'm glad they are not extinct. However, you said "that's how they saved themselves" without ever actually describing how they saved themselves. Did they burrow in the ground until the rats starved to death? Are they poisonous to the rats and killed the rats off before the rats ate all the bugs? We are missing the "how they saved themselves" part I feel.

I am sorry to break it to you but I have seen these insects in Cuenca-Ecuador. They call it "ututo" and It's worth mentioning that the city is nowhere near the cost and it's located rather in the highlands. This is nothing new there and I believe they proliferate during the rainy season when they can be seen in large numbers. Anyhow, this is one place I have personally witnessed the insect without even having to look for it and who knows where else you might be able to find it.
