Here's my avatar hot take: The fire nation was the least suited to world domination and that's clearly seen in the fact that they relied on machines more than bending. If the water tribes put even a quarter of their effort into their navy that the fire nation did they'd have an invincible navy and conquer every port city and settlement crippling the economy of the other nations, which would be especially devastating for an island nation like the fire nation. No fortification would defend you from earth benders tunneling under your city and collapsing your buildings, and I think it says a lot that the earth kingdome has the most territory. Lastly the air nomads would be the only faction with an air force basically combining the mobility threat of water tribe navy and the fortification threat of earth bender tunnelers. Fire bending despite how it's presented in the show in my opinion has the least effective military applications.

@@troljynx9953 Lightning bending is weak for all the reasons we _think_ lava bending is weak and visa versa:
The avatar bending community has tricked itself into believing lava bending is weak because it's slow when in reality in the it's presented with the same speed as water benders. While at the same time it provides similar defensive capabilitys as water benders and unlocks ineradicable construction and building potential for utility purposes.
Yes lightning bending is considered an instant kill but it's got a crazy charge up time and the lightning is slow enough for people to reposition themselves after it's been shot. Unlike lava bending it has no use outside of attack and a source of energy, which can easily be provided in other ways. If you want an awesome combat only fire sub bending type, go for combustion bending.

Airbending was already shown to be used in aggressive fighting... Monk Ioso hand at least 10 firebender bodies around him when he died. Meaning he killed thing with most likely airbending. Not all airbenders was a practicer of pacifism. Avatar Yangchin , the previous airbending avatar, and monk Ioso being of note. Aang was so stern to pacifism based on being The last Airbender. He believed he had to be the perfect Airbender in every way to preserve his heritage.
Ziaheer already studied airbending history, techniques, philosophies for years before being even in prison. He wouldve basically been a air acolyte that gained the airbending.
Idk if it was stated if he went against aang at one point but the only living airbending master, Tezin, mid-low diffed him.

Lethality in air bending is a slipper slope imo. Honestly, it's like waterbending vs bloodbending.
Bloodbending does psychological damage to anyone who uses it for prolonged periods of time, it hurts their mind and corrupts them. Now this is an actual, magical side effect to using this power.
However the same principal can apply to using air bending as a lethal art. Such as having the power to legit just pull the air from someones lungs at a moments notice. It's incredibly powerful... And with that power, it corrupts. Absolute power, corrupts absolutely after all. It is a more practical, usable art sure. But the reason Air Nomads practiced pacifism was so they didn't become warlords and conquer the world. You saw what even a master pacifist could do to a room full of firenation soldiers in the first Avatar when Aang found his old master.
It's just a matter of not giving everybody free reign to become conquerors and unchecked soldiers as opposed to defenders.

Traditional bending was based on various Chinese martial Arts. Airbending was based on "circle-walking" (baguazhang), a martial art focused on redirecting an opposing force rather than meeting it with force of your own.
The problem with strict adherence to a particular style in martial arts is that it often excels in doing one thing very well at the expense of sacrificing skill in other areas.

Don't get me wrong he's a really good air bender , creating his own moves and stuff but are we going to forget some of the air benders left fire Nation soldiers in the ground before dying out? Example monk gyaso (can't spell his name off the top of my head) had bodies laid out before probably being overpowered by them. The world of Avatar is gonna change the moment shockwave bending is invented. Explosions without fire, attacks faster than sound, combustion bending would pale in comparison. It would be like creating concussive blasts like Cyclops. Soldiers in WWII were dying in hospitals after surviving bombing raids because although the explosions were over, the shockwaves ruptured their organs and killed them from within.
And what if they uncover sonic attacks? Imagine the weapon Stane paralysed Tony with in Iron Man 1. Now imagine being able to skill into it and never need a device for it.
Finally, with engineering and technology progressing from historical looking times to the early 20th century with planes, how long before they unlock supersonic flight without planes, maybe just an advanced enough suit. I think the new Airbending styles work more for the newer generation of Airbenders and Zaheer is because they've adapted it to current bending styles. In LoK, the unique bending styles change to be more of an MMA style that allows benders to be light on their feet at all times. We see when Korra first launches an earth disk, she uses traditional earthbending stances and technique and has good power, but Bolin points out that her stances leave her open for to attacks, and teaches her a probending stance instead. We see it with probenders as well, a lot of them hold themselves in similar ways to minimise openings that would occur if they used more traditional stances. So this new version of Airbending is more adaptive to the current and modern bending styles that focus a lot more on offence and counter attacks. However, both Tenzin and Aang are traditional Airbenders. We see the nuances in the difference to their styles in Tenzin and Zaheers fight. Tenzin's form relies far more on the agility and acrobatics of the traditional Airbending methods. We see this when Zaheer and Tenzin scale a wall, Zaheer uses the air to boost his jump while Tenzin uses an air spiral to boost him up. Because of the direction of current bending in LoK, a lot of movements deemed unnecessary are forgotten in favour of more straightforward approaches, but this also takes away from the apparent nature of Airbending, in that it's meant to be adaptable and fluid, changing on a whim to find the path of least resistance. While Zaheer and to extent some of the modern Airbenders are all agile in themselves and capable of finding the path of least resistance, they lack the agility and acrobatics of the previous Airbenders and the ability to change your course of action on a whim. Tenzin was in control against his fight with Zaheer because Zaheer forgot one of the fundamental rules to Airbending in that it's a defensive end adaptive style of bending. However, that's not his fault as I've stated earlier, all bending styles of LoK focus on being more offensive and fluid to minimise wasted movement and allow for more attacking opportunities. Personally, I think Aang and by extension the Tenzin and the air nomads prior have a better Airbending style because it allows them to more readily adapt to their opponents movements and attacks and exploit in weakness or openings that may be present with a strong counter attack. That's just my opinion tho

Tenzin bodied 3 red lotus members by himself and they'd face airbending before. His style wasn't just new, it was largely ineffective. The new style for the different elements was a logical evolution but it wasn't designed for large scale war.

Respectfully saying this, but I think art of lethality is needed vs using air bending in a defensive measure by dodging wearing down an opponent over time.
Only cuz I much agree, defensive tactics are highly arguable methods. Lethal is literally ways to help protect yourself better, and depending on how you both view, and utilize air bending teachings could be potentially used like how Zahere used the teachings. Not just in self defense or lethally in a bad situation, but literally have the potentially to legitimately fly without manipulation of air.
Instead your riding on air, or using the atmosphere of your surroundings be your way to fly. May I also add don't have to rely on tools, or machines to fly lol.

It’s great for self defense and killing your opponents.
Let me explain, when Aang found monk Gyatso’s body he was surrounded by around 30 (which is my rough estimate) dead fire nation soldiers. Now he killed them and here’s the thing they were amped up by Sozin’s comet, and he was able to kill 30 super charged soldiers before dying himself. If they attacked without Sozin’s comet, Gyatso would’ve killed way more firebenders.

Even as the avatar Aang never killed anyone (that I remember) and as he said was only taught to drain his opponents energy till they can’t fight him anymore. Air bending could dead ass be one of the deadliest bending techniques but it’s just the fact that air benders (before the extinction event) we’re pacifists who never wanted to harm anyone. Ofc I think that Aang PROBABLY has better mobility like combat speed since that what he was meant to do (avoid fighting, run, and if you can’t then dodge your opponents every move till they’re exhausted).

Well to say that his style is better is just.. wrong? I mean it’s one of those things we’re like even if he was the absolute best offensive air bender of all times indisputably, if you put him up against the absolute best defensive air bender that ever existed it would still be anyones fight. The advantage he has is similar to the one that aang had in avatar in the sense that nobody has seen this kind of bending before. Before him, people really hadn’t seen an airbender go full out into attack mode and likewise firebenders weren’t use to aang literally just bouncing around until there entire platoon of ships was destroyed. Now if he was even slightly better at his offense then his opponent was at defense then obviously he would have a slight advantage but if you flipped the roles, the same would be true. It’s just how a fight works

  • @osoaries
    @osoaries Před rokem +1

Nah I disagree, Aang's actual prowess and skill comes from the fact that his fighting style is so pacifist. He had to train that much more to really remove lethality from his fighting. He dances around and plays with master benders because of his style, training, and martial arts. While his style is definitely designed towards self defense, it's clear how deadly it can actually be. The very few times Aang raged out, it showed just how truly capable and deadly he could be. Any truly sufficient threat would prompt Aang to amp it up.
Zaheer is definitely the 2nd best Airbender we see next to Tenzin, but his prowess is more martial arts than actual bending. As you mention, he loses to Tenzin, but beats other world renown benders. The problem is which I feel like is being over looked, is almost no one knows how to fight Air benders. They're an endangered species, so him defeating Kaya, while impressive, is a caveat, as once again there's little to no real combat experience against air benders. Even if we assume she's trained and sparred along side Tenzin, those aren't real fights. Zaheer has a massive advantage because of that. That's not something that can just be dismissed I think.
Also, him defeating Korra is a mute point to me. Let's be honest here, Korra is a trash avatar. I love her, her character, her story, her growth, her arcs, but let's be clear, objectively speaking; She's a trash avatar. She loses almost every engagement to any real quality bender and even in the show, her best moments are her defeating fodder, or plot armor scenes. i.e. achieving airbending, after losing her bending to Amon, *who she lost too beforehand* or beating Zaheer with AS. She loses against Zaheer, Unaloq, and Kuvira, pretty easily and even struggles against lesser named characters. She struggles even in the bending games.
(I recognize all this has to do with her character development and overall story structure, but that's a conversation for another day.)
What I will say is Zaheer had the potential to be the best Airbender, his philosophies, attitude, and will power allowed him to achieve flight, which is something that hasn't been done by an Airbender in a very long time. He naturally achieved astral projection as well, which is another highly masterful and difficult airbending ability (although not only limited to Airbenders, they're just more attuned to it.) His aggressive nature actually helps him achieve that status because he's already willing to sacrifice everything. He has air bending with a fire benders aggression, an earth benders fortitude, and a water benders adaptability, but I believe he'd only truly achieve the status as the best airbender after actually going through rigorous training, both in his own personal strengths and styles but also learning the traditional pacifist style combat that stems from Airbender culture.

These were all ordinary people had ZERO experience with ANY form of bending. With most participants ranging from teenagers - middle aged.
And, t's a surprise none of them were good at adapting to a highly agile and precise form of bending like Air, but caught on much quicker to a style that's far more forgiving and simple as "just throw a air punch"
Zaheer was said to be a prodigy in the same way that Zuko and Azula were (if memory serves me correctly the show states he was and the comics state Zuko and Azula were basically destined to be powerful Firebenders) AND he had already studied air benders and their culture prior to gaining Airbending. He's the exception, not the golden standard of lethality vs pacifism forms of Airbending.
Not to mention Monk Gyotsu (if I'm spelling this correctly) took out nearly 10 comet amped Firebenders as we see with the bodies and he was raised on the typical air nomad teachings with no proof of anything besides this.

In LoK, at least in Korra, Bolin, & Mako's case, since the series follows them the most, they spend more time using shadow boxing as their bending style more than anything else. This was especially bad for Korra because she's bending 4 different elements, you'd think she'd use 4 different fighting styles, but nope. For her it's just punch, punch, punch, maybe sweep the leg every once in a while.
