Comparing BJU and Excellence in Literature for High School | Homeschooling Through High School

- I have two very different students, so we do not automatically use the same curriculum for both of them. Today I'm sharing details on the BJU Literature programs and Excellence in Literature programs, how they differ, what they cover, and why we use different ones with each of my students.

Thank you for the extra information about the Excellence in Literature courses. I have been intrigued by them for a while but they dont seem to be covered as much as other options by the homeschool community.

Question on for your sons English course and what’s all included…I have a 9th grader and he just did IEW course with the videos and read all the novels that they suggest, fit it grammar and wordly wise books. That was considered English 9 for him. Just wondering if you have your son do bju course and IEW writing course (do you have your kids read the suggested novels?)along with fit it? Plus the 3 additional novel studies to make it an honors course? Worried I am not doing enough for a high school English course let alone an honors course.
It has depended on the IEW course he chose. He did the both of the Following Narnia ones (year 1 in 8th grade and year 2 in 9th). He did read the books for those, usually doing the assigned chapters on Mondays. But those novels he has read before and were quick reads. Most of the time, we just read the shorter selections in the IEW books instead of the novels. He already had a lot of reading on his plate between his lit course and the Guest Hollow courses he does (those are living book based programs so lots of reading). I think it sounds like you had a really solid English course set up for your son! Definitely covered all the areas well.
Thank you for all the information you provide. I so appreciate your videos. I am using EIL with my 9th grader. Any advice on how to assign a grade? (I follow the rubric, but I am trying to figure out how else to divide the assignments for a final grade in each module)
In the excel grade book I use, I can assign different weight to assignment categories and it will automatically calculate an overall grade for me. I give the heaviest weight to the final paper for each module (the 750 word ones) and a lower weight to the weekly writing assignments (usually assigned weeks 1 and 2 of each module). We also factor in her vocab into the overall English grade. The major papers are 45% of the total grade, minor papers/writing assignments are 30% and vocab work is 25%.

We have been using IEW for years and love it. My son, who uses BJU for literature, does one of their theme based programs each year. My daughter did an IEW theme based program her 9th and 10th grade years. Next year for 11th will be the first year I won’t have her do one since she will have plenty of writing assignments for EIL and some other courses she is taking

What are the writing assignments like with BJU Press Fundamentals of Literature? Is it enough to prepare them for writing papers?
In my opinion, no. There are not many writing assignments and limited instruction. BJU sells a separate writing and grammar course , so I believe they cover that all more there than in this course.
I'm sorry if I missed this but I didn't see or hear - are you doing fundamentals of literature or elements of literature from BJU?
She mentions her child is going into 10th grade, so I believe that would be Elements. They already did Fundamentals in 9th.
We did Fundamentals of Literature for my son’s 9th grade year, then he will be doing Elements of Literature his 10th grade year.
Is your daughter doing IEW and IEL at the same time? If so, do you find that it's a manageable load?
She is only doing Excellence in Literature this upcoming school year. Since she will be doing the honors add on, I felt she would be doing plenty of writing with just EIL.
