When a trend is started & seen to be a positive--like:looking good by using makeup, apparel, jewelry..it's not uncommon for others to follow this trend--for, who amongst us does not want to look good or reppresent in the best light.? This is probably a soft pressure that exists in the greater society (corporate, entertainment world...) as well & we see it in sports. You mentioned distracting to you--why is that? I don't think it bothers them, it's their choice--freedom of choice, unless their team is forcing them to wear it. It is definitely cultural and more prevalent in certain communities - particularly blacks in America. Of course generalizations and stereotypes are exaggerations but definitely have some truth to them. Looking cool while performing in comp. is and has been very important to certain people. This stereotype goes way back. Some people try so hard to look like they are not trying and their image is more important than winning. It's quite funny and an interesting psychological exploration.
One look at Pryce's progression will tell you there is nothing clean about her performance. She's come from virtual unknown to gold medal favourite in under 2 months! Plus she's just out of a long NCAA season and still setting some of the fastest times of all time. Major red flag to seasoned track and field fans.

It is nonsense to compare sub 49 runners to junior high athletes. In fact Sydney has a PB of 48.74, Femke - 49.44 (49.17 in the 400m short track).
