It’s not easy, admitting to yourself that your life is not a happy one, but that’s exactly what Park Dong Hoon (Lee Sun Gyun) has been forced to do. A middle-aged engineer working at a company where his college junior, Do Joon Yeon (Kim Young Min), is his boss, Dong Hoon is anything but happy. But that’s the least of his problems. With his two unemployed brothers living at him with his mother, he has to do what he can to help his struggling family, while trying to hold his own life together. Meanwhile, his wife and Joon Yeon are secretly having an affair.
As if life couldn’t get any more complicated or miserable, Dong Hoon soon finds himself entangled in a messy situation when one of his co-workers, Lee Ji An (IU) sees him accepting an unexpected bribe at work. Living with an invalid grandmother and drowning in debt, Ji An is drowning in her own miserable life so when the opportunity presents itself, she does what she can to try to make things better. Exploiting Dong Hoon in his moment of weakness, Ji An does what she can to make her life better but things don’t go the way she planned.
Caught up in a tangled web of personal struggles and internal corporate rivalry, Dong Hoon and Ji An find themselves fighting for the chance to make life better as they struggle to free themselves from their current misery and find a way to heal the wounds they each carry.

I think what I loved most about this ending scene was that during skip/catch up of everyone, you don’t actually fully see Ji-an. It’s always her back. It’s not until she finally meets Dong-hoon again do we get to see her face, but from his perspective. Almost as if the audience wasn’t really worthy to see her first again after the changes they’ve went through, but that Dong-hoon deserves to see her first the most. Out of everyone that could meet her again, it should be Dong-hoon. Especially because literally almost every moment until this scene, her face was the same harden, distant and cold expression. But now? Ji-an has changed and moved on from parts of her life and her face is almost new. Dong-hoon even days himself “I barely recognized you” emphasizing how much she has changed. Ji-an is peaceful after so long and it’s not the audience who gets to see her like that, but Dong-hoon. After all they’ve been through, it what they both deserve. Ji-an would be able to meet Dong-hoon on the streets again and greet happily, after finding comfort.

While his character showed compassion, love and care to IU's character in the show, there was no one beside him in real life when he needed that support the most. Even if he committed a crime/bring shame, he didn't deserve to take his own life. Korean law, the media and toxic people cost this mister's life. RIP Lee Sun Kyun. I hope you show the same love and caring to the people above as you did in My Mister.

Park Dong Hoon is the type of man, I would like to be in my next life. Unfortunely I dont believe in reincarnation.
What made my cry when they saw each other again is the first time in the whole series Dong-hoon has a genuine smile across his face. Yeah he smile a a bit but there was mostly sadness. Here you can the happiness in his face when he sees Ji-an. And the thought of what they went through and endured to get to this point had me balling my eyes out.
You know when he brought her back to that bar they all visit (jheung hui's) I guess in the second last episode you could see he was smiling more. He didn't even smile much when they were celebrating his promotion with his wife there but later when Ji ian was there with his friends ( including yura and the owner woman of the bar) you could see even simple sentences made him smile. This was a stark contrast to his personality in the drama because like you said he didn't smile much at all but with Ji ian there with his 'family' I guess he was able to feel relieved and happy. like everyone he could truly rely on were there
The fact that he initiated the handshake hehehe I love how the ending shows much they've healed, matured and tried to be happy on their own. I think he loved her more than he realised himself and this time away from her probably showed him just how much. He isn't the type to cry so when he does, you know it's serious. These little details they put in the drama is crazy. That first episode was so uncomfortable because I could feel the intensity and that's so crazy. 10/10 my most emotionally gripping drama to date and I hope people love it and see how much relationships are important.
i love how the full circle is complete. At the beginning Dong Hoon was the one trying to reach out Ji An. Then the ending shows that Ji An was the one who recognised and reached out Dong Hoon (she knows his voice in her heart)

Different language, different culture, different generation, and yet it affects me like no drama or film I had seen before. I'd love to be reborn in that neighborhood, too!!!
I'm glad the director/writer(s) decided to include this final reunion scene. While it appears to be vague enough that the encounter could just be a happy coincidence, I suspect it to be the start of a slow romance. A romance that takes time to grow, but that which does become intimate after a while. Whether it lasts is another story, but I'd wager they'd always remain close even if they separated.
The romance clues in this scene include Park Dong Hoon initiating skinship through a long (LONG) handshake, Jian countering with a dinner together, and the final look back as they part. The production team could not apparently do an overt romance due to potential backlash, so they gave us this subtle but implied scene instead.
I'm also doubly happy that this drama had a happy ending at all - I was suspecting it to go full-on noir with one of them dying. Especially after Jian got hit by a car in a previous episode.
@@vivianla9085 Hello. I unfortunately don't have a source per se, because I read it from a highly up-voted comment on another CZcams video. Basically, the production team got negative feedback from viewers when it was announced that they would become a couple onscreen. So they changed it to what we see in this scene instead - vague but still affirming.
And I would conclude that they do eventually become a couple because this scene is very telling. The logistical details like his current wife and stuff, would have to be sorted by our own imaginations. The show is over after all. Ultimately, we should just be happy that the director/writer(s) intended for them to be together eventually.
@@vivianla9085 I suppose the intent of the time jump was to give them a fresh start, and allow them to see each other in a new light. Particularly for Park Dong Hoon, since Jian already saw him as a man, and not a 'father-figure' like some would like to infer.
Despite this drama's critical and commercial success, I highly doubt to the possibility of a sequel. I think it's best that it ended the way it did. The age difference would be too high a wall to overcome for some viewers.
@@Hwonami and you can't blame them for that either because Dong hoon himself kept referring to her as a little girl. Though with this time skip and seeing each other in a new light scenario, it could be different. I just finished watching it yesterday and I was one of those viewers who wanted them to end up together but at the same time thought that she's too young but after the time skip, I feel like that mixed feeling has been put down. Also, thank you for telling me that they were originally meant to end up together cuz that ending kinda left me hanging

What do U think Jian comfort is? Her listening to his footsteps,his voice.its Him only him....as well as Donghoon she's the only person who help me breath.
Donghoon is sorrounded by lots of friends and family yet only this girl this able to help him becomes a better person ,to be happy..to keep going in life .now the circle is complete..these two soulmate can now go home to the star and million flowers will bloom now that they are together
This ending is a masterpiece and very poetic. The cinematography on this show is top notch. It started very dark(lighting wise) which describes the emotional state of the leads. The bright sun, flowers, spring and even IU’s clothing on the ending radiates a new beginning, happiness, contentment and peace. What a show!
In the final scene when they go outside, it seems ji-an is nervous or uncertain about where they stand with each other. You can see this when Dong-hoon suggests she visits hos office and old colleagues. Is a hint that he wants to see her again, a test to she if she wants to see him or just a polite invite. The her friends shout they are leaving, ji-an looks back to Dong-hoon, there is a pause. Just as she starts to move backwards, he asks to shake her hand. As soon as they shake and Dong-hoon thanks her, the uncertainty disappears from her face. Like she understood what he didn't want to let her go. Now it's her turn to confirm her feelings, she asks him to dinner. She also calls him 'mister'. In an earlier episode, Dong-hoon got upset that she called him my mister due to the implication on their relationship. However in this final scene a massive smile appears on this face. Without saying it out loud, ji-an has shown she still loves him and wants him to be her mister. Whilst Dong-hoon has signaled he is ready to accept her love now that they have healed themselves.
I went into this with very low expectations. I was new to k-drama’s. But my god was this show a masterpiece and once in a lifetime experience. The show made me cry like no other did.
Same.. every episode made me cry. I deeply wanted them together or at least a kiss but I think their love for each other is on a different kind of level that we might not even understand.. pure, yet so caring.. unbelievable series.. ❤

I cried so many times throughout this drama, and the ending was very satisfying. I've never seen a show which compares on this kind of emotional level. It was written and performed so beautifully
You should try Something in the Rain. It is up there in terms of emotional. Perhaps even more than My Mister but in a different way because it is about a couple. It stars Son Ye-Jin. I highly recommend it.
@@Lars1224 I found our female leads actions to be so irritating,depressed me, didnt see each other for three years, 36 year old at home,move out for Gods sake and be with the one who loves you.
@@consumersgasman8376 if you mean in SITR then I believe you misunderstood Jin-a the female lead. First she was 35 not 36. And they didn't have feelings for each other the 3 yrs prior to episode 1. They were more like siblings prior to ep 1. And Korean society is very conservative where you are expected to live at home til married and/or overall be obedient to your parents. That being said Jin-a did go against her parents , her mother in particular, by not staying with her ex and dating a younger guy (he's only 4 or 5 yrs younger) with a family background that is frowned on. She also did move out when her mother kicked her out prior to Jin-a and Jun Hui breaking up. At first Jin-a was shocked but then realized it is a good thing because it gave her the opportunity to be independent and be with Jun Hui. But he messed that up by making the decision that they should move to the USA to run away from their problems without even consulting her before telling his job he would go. She wanted to stay in Korea, be an independent woman who does not depend on others and face their problems together. She was being mature about it while he showed his youthful immaturity with his initial decision and when she didnt conform by going to the USA he went anyways and left her behind. Something he promised he would never do. Breaking contact with her also showed his immaturity and because of his pride. Of course he realized all this in ep 16 the final episode and did what he had to so he could get her back by admitting his mistake and ask for forgiveness.

Handshake was an excuse to hold her hand :) and he hold her hand so for long and tight it leave imprint..and both of them are looking at their Holding hands..and Donghoon smiling and staring to a woman in public.they still love each other :)
Because he did not dare to say "hug" in public so the handshake. 😂
This end was everything. The way they both smiled, especially Dong Hoon after everything he went through (Ji-An too). They are finally happy
The way i CRIED when they saw each other in the end the contrast between how they started and how they are at the end really made me lose it

This show does a great job at displaying human emotions. Depression, pain, defeat, loneliness, anxiety.... then it slowly shifts to understanding, redemption, healing, happiness, acceptance, and love.
More than that, it shows the beauty of relationships. The heartache of longing. The power of kindness and understanding.
I love how the drama leave everything for us to see our heart in every scene..
They leave us to think...
This drama just show us that every person we meet in our life, what they did to us and what they say... become part of us.. no matter how good or bad they make us feel..it leaves in our system.
It depends how we will use that history or situation to our present life or future...
We will never be the same after meeting that one person in our life.
Splendid ending. The main issue with most k-dramas. But this one was over the top of everything else.

I'm shocked! So sad to hear the news of Lee Sun-kyun who played Park Song-Hoon's death today 27 December 2023. He was such a wonderful actor, my favourite Korean actor by far. RIP My Mister!
This drama deserves 100% attention! It was truly amazing acting. I love all the emotional depths portrayed in all the scenes. Lee Sun Gyun was an amazing actor especially in this drama. I can watch him always.
Best drama ever, IU is an excellent actress, Lee Sun Kyun, I love him in every roll. Poor Ji An she will never get over that ahjussi.
They both were really in love with each other. She stated multiple times in the drama that she liked him, that she would do anything for him. Even others noticed how desperately they were in love with each other through their actions. He was a man of principles so he kept on calling her kid and things like that but you just have to see how far he would go for her. He was capable of letting anything go and be a pushover but if Ji an was involved he would lose it. He would keep staring at her in the office all the time ( nobody does that in a platonic love ). He hit people for her, he got angry when she took the slippers away, hated it when she ignored him and always thought later about what she said to him even when she wasn't there. He tolerated his cheating wife but Ji an was his kryptonite.
I completely agree. The love is strong between these two if you really pay attention. The Director and writers had to subtly weave their relationship because of backlash over their age gap.

Right from the first episode until the last. there's always a good distance between them when they talk. But here, in this last episode. They broke the barrier, their hands touched. It SHOULD mean something.
When IU was heavyly critisize by her acting in scarlet heart (i still dont know why🙄), this series followed and happened. All the doubt about her acting died down instantly. She showed them. She prove that she just dont only act but she's actually good at it. So many positive reviews about her portrayal of Lee Ji an. I cant thnik anyone can pull it off.
Esmeralda Park what? she was really good in scarlet heart! I don’t agree with most of what happened in the drama but She nailed all her crying scenes.

@@esmeraldapark5476 she was really bad in Scarlet Heart in the beginning but progressively got better, I really like her acting now, but I watched Scarlet Heart after watching Hotel del Luna and was surprised by how much her acting has grown ever since. She was spectacular in this though.
Scarlet heart was perfect in all aspects except storyline 😂😂 let's be honest, it was just a melodrama trash and people wanted to put the blame on someone for it

I loved this series, it made me think differently about many things. IU, is an actress of her generation, how she often conveyed complex emotions with a glance. 😊

Yeah I agree. The way she looked at him when he turned around. Her feelings and attractions for him returned 100% in that moment. The way he was so happy to see her and initiated to touch her by way of handshake (he only hugged her once to say goodbye before); plus he looked back before parting and the expression he gave. It looked like both a mix of relief and yearning. They will have a long good relationship.

20210314 Needless to say everything about this drama was superb actors directors storyline. Is it just me or is it really that Lee Sun Gyun always looks like he is walking on the catwalk and has the posture of a model. So nice to watch himin here from seeing him in Coffee Prince, Parasite. Am a new fan for sure. IU is an intense actress. The scene where she was saying her goodbye to her grandma really moved me and ugly crying. There’s also the beautiful neighborhood and strong family love we all should emulate to make this world a better place.

Don’t cry :( well I read that the screenwriters intended for it to be a romance but yknow the age difference, so I read it was an open ending instead. Interpret it however you, let your mind go crazy with ideas of how their life progressed after dinner

I found out about Lee Sun Kyun’s passing just before I watched the finally of this great show. Made me that much more emotional that such a great character was dealing with such hardship in real life.
This will always be my favorite dramatical piece. This made me feel seen and heard. I resonate with so many characters. they are real and heartfelt. I appreciate this.
