- The Royal Family is an American sitcom television series that ran on CBS from September 18, 1991 until May 13, 1992. The series was created and executive produced by Eddie Murphy, as part of a development deal Murphy had with CBS, and produced by Paramount Television, the television arm of Paramount Pictures, with which Murphy had long been associated. The series starred Redd Foxx and Della Reese.
Murphy had previously worked with Foxx and Reese in the 1989 film Harlem Nights, which Murphy wrote and directed. The working title for the series was Chest Pains. - wikipedia

I'm still convinced the fight scene between Della & Eddie in Harlem Nights is 1 of the best scenes in cinematic history. Love Della!

This is my first time hearing of this series. It sure was headed for a long running success. So classy.
People keep saying 'the show had potential'...no, it was a ratings hit. It was a SUCCESS...until Redd's untimely passing. But CBS had struck with the show. It was a great blend of family and Redd and Della's quick wit.
But that's only because most people didn't remember this show.
Like when 8 simple Rules fell apart after John Ritter died.

I remember watching when this series debuted. It was definitely Redd Foxx's comeback. Hilarious from the first episode, then suddenly and sadly over after Mr. Foxx's untimely death. It was a shame that the show did not get a chance to be fully realized, because it would have definitely been an emmy winning hit. The whole family were perfectly cast, even the children's mom whom a lot of people criticized, but I thought brought the right balance to her character. It was the first time I saw little Naya Rivera. I never watched Glee, but it was nice to know that she was still acting, and sad to hear that her young life had ended. Thank you to the poster, for this video. I had never seen it before, and it brought back a lot of happy memories of days gone by🙂💖🙏.
Well with the mess that happened i’m kind of glad it did suffer. Let me explain. Redd Foxx had was already Being abused by the producers before the death occurred. On the day at his death producer said I have to teach you to be funny (which was A constant comment to A comedian legend wtf) and he was pissed but didn’t say nothing. Later on that day during the rehearsals he decided (because his part was small and did not include any lines. Just a simple walk across or behind the couch) That he was going to do an interview with entertainment tonight. One of the people that worked On Set caught an attitude (his view was because he was in the scene he had to be there), interrupted The interview abruptly, grabbed Redd by the arm like a child and brought him back to the set. Then proceeded to say first I gotta teach you to be funny now this. Redd foxx cursed everybody out before doing his part and continued doing so while mumbling (So if he could just part). Unfortunately when he got to the couch he had a heart attack. Some people wasn’t concerned (because he would do his fake heart attacks) But Della Reese knew something was up (almost instantly) and when over. He said call his wife twice and died on set. They revived him but he died (for good). Once everything happened everybody (including the producers) was at the hospital. The producers had the audacity to say now what are we gonna do because this script was written for Della and Redd and then the wife said something. Della knew that it wasn’t the truth and in her words she breaked And cursed the everybody out. Della Reese mentioned that she was that it was mostly aimmed at the wife and that was the day she said that was the last day she was going to do tv shows in this way again. She also mentioned that she didn’t care for the fact that they didn’t give him an proper send off on the show and although Jackee is talented they should’ve never acted like that was the replacement.
I just learned about this show a few months ago and glad Redd Foxx and Della Reese got a chance to work together for a while B4 his death. Awesome he's rocking the Falcons too my team Rip to Redd Foxx and Della Reese

This was definitely gonna be red comeback for the nineties the show was starting to get good that a few episodes in the legend passed away RIP and it's crazy that redd and Malcolm X used to be good friends when they were teenagers but Malcolm was too much trouble who was in-and-out of jail And redd started doing his thing while Malcolm was out and the rest is history for both legends

The show was pretty much the standard of it's day, but Redd Foxx, the legendary comic that he was, made it stand above the standard.
Literally love you for this they only have the pilot and 1st two episodes available.

This show actually had high ratings, before the death of Redd Foxx's. I wanted to last longer, when the show wasn't the fresh show that it was without Redd. They got Jackee Harry (one of Marla Gibbs's protegees) to save the show...that didn't work, so the show was canceled. However, Della did a lot better after the death of Redd, that within a few short years, she was asked/approached to do one of the leads in: "Touched By An Angel", on which she stayed on the show for 9 seasons & continues to play the channels in reruns, heavily. There are 5-6 stations that played: "Touched By An Angel".

Della would later try again with "Touched By An Angel," (with newcomer Roma Downey) which supposed to last for 1 season, however, thanks to die hard letter writers, the show stayed on the air for 8 more seasons, making it her 1st and only successful series in prime-time, outside of her singing. I was very happy Della had to play Tess or Tess would found her (Della Reese). Now, may both Redd Foxx & Della Reese #RIP.
