How To Fix and Setup The T7 Samsung SSD App on Apple Silicon Macs

- I recently purchased this rugged T7 shield external SSD and went through the installation and after restarting it is not being detected with the Samsung app. The samsung app allows you to password protect and encrypt the SSD, you can potentially skip this step of installing the software if you do not plan to use it.
However if you going to use the app, follow along on how to fix it. With latest MacOS security settings, it no longer allows to third party apps access to the system extension or kernel without explicitly changing the security policy settings.

Update: Samsung will remove the Portable SSD app from their website and be replaced with the Magician software. -> "As Portable SSD Software has been integrated into Magician Software, Magician Software is the only software available for all Samsung consumer memory products and portable SSD Software will no longer be available for download after April 15th, 2024."
Thank you so much for clarify this as I was trying to find where to download portable SSD Software for days haha. Yet I still can not find how to set up a password for T7 Touch with magician. Any advices?

This video is AWESOME! Thank you so much for creating it. I purchased a T& Samsung SSD because my old Windows Desktop was old and I wanted to save my photos and documents. After purchasing a Mac 2023 Desktop I tried using my T7 Samsung SSD, but it would not open, UGH! I even called Apple, but they could not help me because it wasn't an Apple product. After following your video I can now open the Samsung T7 and access my precious photos and documents. Again thank you so much!

This worked on one of my macs but not another, to solve the issue on the other one at the beginning of these steps I had to download the installer from samsung's website, and then complete the steps in the video. Thank you!

If still have some problem with disconnected, try set "Allow accessories to connect" to "Automatically When Unlocked" in "Privacy & Security" settings. "Allow accessories to connect" default set to "Ask for New Accessories", for the first time when connected to mac, mac will show up a window to ask, but after Eject and reconnect to mac, the "Ask" window not show up again, and the Samsung app still show disconnected.

This happened to me when I upgraded to monterey. I wasn't so concerned about the password feature, so I found a windows computer that could read the drive, went into settings and disabled the password. Now it works on my mac like a normal hard drive.

Thanks for a good video showing all the steps. This was not a walk in a park,. Unfortunally I did not get access to the disk pn my Mac and I wonder if this is because I copied things in to it from an old mac os which apperantly did not have all the "helpful" features of the new system. What is a bit strange is that it did not appear on that mac either, however the drive with all files appeared on my trustworthy Lenevo Thinkpad Win 10 PC.

Hello, I set up password for T9 Samsung SSD and unlocking the disk works great on Macbook but when I connect the disk to iPad Pro it shows “read only disk” and show no files on the disk that were already written on it. This is because password is set up and I don’t know how to unlock T9 on iPad. There is no software from Samsung for iPad like PSSD to unlock the T9 disk on iPad. Can you help, please?

I got 7 pieces of the SSDs starting from some T5, T7 Fingerprint and the new T7 Shields. None of them have any problem to get recognized on ANY of my Apple Silicon Macs, and i got MBP M1 Max, Apple Studio M1 Max and Macbook Air M2 - Not on Big, Ventura and also not on Sonoma. To disable SIP may work for you in your case, but it is by far not a solution i would recommend.

Your tutorial worked like a breeze. I was--finally--able to access my T7 drives. Unfortunately, I still have a T7 Touch which the Samsung app doesn't see. Any ideas?

samsung magician 8.0 is only detecting apple internal ssd nvme and it is not detecting the t7 shield ssd

@@gokzilla same here. i reformatted my SSD using APFS the moment I got it. not sure if this causes the SSD not to be detected. tried the method in this video but still not detecting.

Is this Samsung app required in order to make the disk operational? If so, this is a deal breaker for me. Does anyone know?
Not really, you can use the Samsung app to use the shipped password protection feature. Other alternative is the using MacOS APFS format which has built in similar security/encryption feature. But, if you don't care for any of those you can use the drive as is without password.

You may need to keep it on for the system to trust the software and for it to function properly.
If you don't have an English keyboard or if you use an other language, be careful: Before you enter your password to change the security settings, choose first the right language you use, if your password contains other signs then a-z and 0-9!!!! If not you will be locked out from your mac for three hours!

It's only a MacOS security thing, Windows and Linux should be fine. I assume it won't be detected on other Macs.. might give that a try to verify.
