      What brass instrument do you say is the hardest? I think French horn is. I play tuba but I've learned all of the brass instruments and went to woodwind. Oboe is my next after that, I have bassoon and that's it. I'll have to start learning stranger instruments.

      Well... we all have different opinions, flute, I think, might be a better idea than the oboe. I play the oboe and honestly I hate it, so many struggles with the reed breaking, soaking, the sound is terrible when you aren't experienced, costs a lot, and you might need a teacher. I would definitely choose flute over oboe any day.

    Thank you so much. As a complete beginner approaching 70, I found it most reassuring that the notes I was playing sounded remarkably like yours straightaway! This is important, because if you blow harder you can get other notes out of it, especially the octave of the G.
    A word of warning ! All the oboe videos like this available in England on youtube seem to be American. With an English oboe, you DON’T need the right hand for the C . And what is this little hole at the back ? Presumably the thumb plate takes care of that. Still, have it your way if you really prefer it. But it might be worth a mention for the unwary and completely naïve.
    Note: English folk do need to unpress the thumb plate for the C. You are going to need an English instruction manual, and in the case of this video, don’t start with the C. The other notes are perfectly easy too. Mind you, I am an avid recorder player, and am in the habit of resting a lot of the weight on my lip. Don’t do that with the oboe !

    • @jeanpi314159
      @jeanpi314159 Před 8 lety

      +Jack Degenhart (“JD”)
      It's absolutely different .
      There are about 100 fingerings for the oboe ( you don' t need to know all of them at the beginning) , and various fingerings for some notes , following the serie of notes you have to play but also the speed , the precision , or the beauty of the sound .
      For instance : if you have to play fast , then some fingerings are impossible to use and it exists other ones , but a little less beautiful or precise . etc ...
      If you have to play some melodies, there is a problem for fingering D and just after F ...So you need another fingering .
      But the main problem concerns the reeds !!

    • @nomorebushz
      @nomorebushz Před 5 lety

      Karen Sorrentino Make sure you have cork grease, and it should be inserted into the oboe until it stops. If there is a space, the air gathers in that area as it disturbs the flow of the air and the pitch will be flat. Always insert the reed completely, Always remove the reed using the cork, not the thread.
