Metal Shaping: Shrinking a Dent in a Squarebody Door (how to fix oil canning)

- Last week I showed a video with a Chevy Squarebody door that had a dent in it, the dent was oil canning really bad. Today in this video I show how I quickly fixed that problem using a Harbor Freight stud welder. I also show the mods I made to the stud puller.

Love these videos. Lots of great tips and info. Agree with you about metalwork on newer vehicles. Had a parking lot mishap with my daily driver a couple of years back. Creased the passenger door perpendicular to the body line. I've messed with that on and off forever it seems. At this point I'm ready to just pick up a door shell, rebuild the door and put it on. Very frustrating. I feel like I've wasted my time and don't have that kinda time to waste. Have worked on many older cars in the past, mine and friends, fixing dents, rust, body mods, etc. I find it so much easier to work with that metal. Great video. Be safe and stay well.

Nice video showing one way to fix an oil canned area in that low crown spot on the square body. I have taken that brace out and plug weld it back in to help keep the metal tight!

Great bit of metal work, well explained. By the way, I think they call that long metal strip a ‘scuttle’; can never remember the name either. Tends to rot on the Talbot Express campers I work on ( as a hobby’ist).

Hey brother i use ROBERLO MAXIFILL body filler. We use SHOWCAR FINISH MONSTER FILL 500 primer 👍

Seems like you could get it perfect but it would come back after the it's all painted and back together.
Is there a way to strengthen that area ?
By shrinking the area it’s now super strong and very tight. So it won’t come back 👍

Have you ever tried a shrinking disc? I have only tried a couple of times but it was quite successful.
Yes but they are pricey and I hardly have spots like this that need work 👍

You use bondo in your hair! Can’t be that bad.
American vehicles seem to use mild steel which is thick yet soft. Japanese cars like Toyota have very thin very HARD steel. It is good in a light hailstorm but when it gives it's totally done. As a newbie I've had them studs rip off and leave a hole I may have pulled too far I guess.
Current goes from that ring to the center where the pin is. If you pushed it down on your hand it and pulled the trigger it would shock you but hopefully nobody does that!!

This weekend I'm going to make a update video on the Mack and I have some dents I could pull and show off this side hammer🤔 I've bin busy trying to get that old beat up fiberglass hood done fuckin thing is going to be the death of me dam old fiberglass and all the hair line cracks everywhere. Finally got my air compressor up and going again bin busy around the farm so bin only getting few hours in on the Mack every night so it's taking a bit. Great video I the 90s Chevy's do the same thing about the door handles I suspect I'll rum into this problem on the 80 GMC I'm starting on next.
I have the Eastwood one too and really like it.
