  • We troubleshot and eventually completely fixed one of our solar electric horse fences today. So many things can go wrong with these, and we tested a good amount of them before finally bringing the fence back up to the 7000 volts it should be putting out! ⚡
The first thing we tried was cleaning and retightening the connection to the ground rod. That did not fix it, but I'm glad we have that done. The second thing we did was look for loose connections and for places where it was shorting out. The fence was lowered last year to accommodate the new foal we had, and that's where a lot of the problems were. The way the rope was wrapped on the connectors had the rope touching the t-post in several locations. The fence was also touching a tree, and the final place it was touching - well you'll just have to watch the video and see! The fence is now back to 100%, but there are issues to be addressed before the horses are set out on pasture.

I can so relate to your troubleshooting. I spent today replacing insulators with new ones.Found several that were cracked which will cause grounding issues.I have a charger that works with a marine battery. We don't have power where my horses are.I'm going to spend the money to buy a fault tester. They aren't cheap but will save time & aggravation of tracking down the short.Love your video.

This fence was messed up pretty bad when it was lowered to accommodate our foal Frankie last year. It was shorting in three places to the t-post, once to a tree, and had a jumper in an unnecessary place. The ground may or may not have been good, but it is generally where you start the investigation. It's all part of owning an electric fence though, you are perpetually checking for problems and fixing them when you find them ⚡😮⚡

Ah the trials of electric fencing! The one good thing about horses & livestock who have been trained to electric fencing is that they generally respect it- whether it's hot or not! Horses have a lot of respect until they run short on pasture grass or hay. Then will get bolder with compromising it. Like they can smell that it's not hot or something, lol! Anyway, can't wait to learn more about Max! I know Ms. Natalie is excited to have a new horse to train and bond with! = ) -Suzie

Hi Suzie - actually the horses rub their chin whiskers on the fence to test if it's on. Our horses are exactly as you said and will just push right through it if it's off or weak! This is a really bad time of year for them as they cannot go out on pasture until it starts growing and recovers from winter - but they can see and smell the fresh grass and it drives them nuts!
Another thing with the pasture is that when it's rainy the horses should be confined as well, otherwise they will compact the soil and destroy the pasture. If left to their own devices, they would destroy the place eventually 😑 I'm waiting on Natalie to introduce Max, hopefully that will happen later today! 😊

@@PlanetMojo So all of those times my horses were over being curious about the hot wire- they were actually rubbing their chins hairs against it. Well you learn something everyday now don't you, LOL! Funny, the day before you posted this we were pulling two nanny goats from our big pasture who are about to kid. I just KNEW I had shut the Premiere1 fence off and when we were bringing the girls out I was the one to undo the gate. I grabbed the gate and apart of the fence right up and yep, ZAP. Like you say, the heat doesn't actually hurt- it just runs an unexpected jolt through you that is very unsettling! Now a honeybee sting- that's another story. I don't get them often because I've learn to stay SO calm when the guard bees approach, but when I do get stung I tell myself I was just blessed with an all-natural, free arthritis treatment, LOL!

Planet Mojo, great job prospects of problem solving, 7000 volts! Solar powered. Interesting video, my friend have electrical fences for their horses 🐎. See you in the next videos.🇺🇸🇨🇦💞🕊

Hi Lorna, Yu[, 7000 volts but very little amperage. It will certainly wake you up but can't harm you. 😊

Good job to do during the summer along with the other 1000 jobs . Anxious to see how the battery chain saw works.

You and me both! I have the vineyard to wrap-up (taking forever with other things coming first) and other stuff to wrap-up, but I cant wait to get out and use that little saw!

Hi Mojo, as the saying goes if you don't succeed try try again, glad you got there in the end. Looks like you need a lot more maintaince though, but I'm sure you know that yourself.

Thanks Larry, you just keep testing things until it works. This time, there were lots of problems that the women caused when lowering the fence, but it's all fixed now 😊

Hi Patty, that's the thing with a short, it wont have any juice until all of a sudden it does - then ZAP! ⚡ We both got zapped on this repair. It doesn't hurt, but it will sure wake you up! 😉
