    Very well explained because I could not figure why the bin file would not show in my z8. Thanks for that very important detail about extracting it into a ROOT file.
    Before buying the Z8 I rented one out and obviously it came with the latest FW version installed. After buying my own Z8 I never bothered in checking the FW version and the next day went on vacation and used the camera. Well long story short I decided to check my software version a month later and it's at 1.01. I have taken over 10,000 images, using firmware version 1.01 which BTW I have been super happy with AF speed and IQ, So I went from 1.01-2.01 FW version. Hopefully all of the bugs are out of 2.01 which I understand is a simple FW update.
    Anyways thanks for your help in the previous videos on tweaking setup and button customizing on the Z8. I dialed in the presets and never bothered to check FW because I figured it was a new camera LOL. Looking forward to future videos.

    Hello Steve, thanks for the tutorial. I've done so many firmware updates in my life that I almost skipped your video. But I thought you must have had a good reason to do the video and - lo and behold - you showed me that a firmware update can still hold a surprise or two.
    Just one suggestion for improvement: When you say "eject" the memory card, you should instruct the viewer to first click the "Eject" icon in MacOS or Windows and wait until the device is removed from the Finder window. Sometimes the operating system doesn't complete the write process to memory card until you instruct it to eject the card. If a user were to physically eject the memory card from the memory card reader, the .bin file may be incomplete or corrupted.
    Anyway, thanks for the valuable video!

    Steve Perry Nikon University comes up with yet another amazing publication!
    *_I just feel the following should be brought to attention:_*
    20:35 [ _Now, this is for lenses, but Nikon, in the past, has done this with cameras as well, so you could run into a situation …_ ]
    This was/is for lens distortions/aberrations in-camera corrections.
    *_NOTA BENE:_*
    Nikon has strongly recommended [in some obscure PDF, which, I imagine, nobody ever reads and also looks old-school and outdated as it has not been updated for a long time] to *_unmount any lens prior to applying_* such a *_Lens Corrections Data Firmware Update_* - and this is also my own superstition, so to speak, just for good measure!

    Hey Steve, thanks for that one. I updated my Z9's camera firmware Thursday or Friday whenever it came out. It threw me for a curve for sure. I even sent an email to NPS. But I went right to Apple and they figured it out. As you noted you get to the .bin file in a different way as before. I did end up redoing the process for the GNSS. I also needed to update my 24-120mm, but 100-400mm nor the 180-600 didn't require updating. Thanks again.

    As the process idiot I am I missed the second step utterly (e.g. didn't read the red text and even saw the g thing on the camera menu and didn't pursue), and in fact when I first saw this video from you thought about how with the now frequent firmware updates (eg I finally remembered confidently all the steps) I didn't have to run to your original update video so I didn't screw up; so I didn't watch this video. Until now. For the record I did have to repeat all update steps as I'd long since deleted the update file, but all worked out -- did occur to me during the update that I should have checked on that....
    All to say, thanks as always for your videos Steve; not that dunderheads like me will ever learn :)

    Well explained 😊 I was expecting that you would also talk about the Z9 Firmware Update version 5.0 features😅. Some people are reporting bugs in it like the photo and video shooting menu names can't be changed. One person in a Facebook 'Z9 users group' reported that after updating to firmware 5.0, his photos are becoming too soft and he reverted back to 4.10.
    Steve, if possible, please make a video on your experience with the latest update of Z9.❤
    In fact, as soon as the firmware 5.0 release report was known, I kept on coming back to your channel and website too, to find out if you have any video regarding the same😅.

      I was in the middle of this project when the firmware hit, so I haven't really had time to look at it all that closely yet. The truth is, at this point, by the time I'd get something out no one would care anymore :)

    • @ranjankmsphotography
      @ranjankmsphotography Před 5 měsíci

      @@backcountrygallery Steve, I don't think so, that by the time you would come out with your video on this, nobody would care anymore. I have a solid reason to claim that because till date not a single well explained, practical observation of the Firmware 5.0 is published in you tube. Rather most of the well established CZcamsrs are probably thinking in the same way that it's no more relevant 😀. I can assure you if you bring a detailed video project on this firmware, all of your followers will be more than glad to watch it. The Supplementary Firmware Update Manual in text form doesn't clarify many points to the extent that it is easily understood. When someone of your calibre explains those points, it becomes so much simplified. I am sure most of your followers having Z9 will be obliged. Please do make it. ❤️

    Thanks for really great and informative stuff.
    Your step by step guides and methodology are outstanding.
    With the updates now available for both the Nikon and Sony systems, would you like to do a system comparison again, 1 year since your earlier video on the subject?
    Does the Nikon system still hold the edge, has the gap increased or has Sony been able to bridge it?

    • @backcountrygallery
      @backcountrygallery  Před 5 měsíci

      You may have to contact Nikon about that one - it sounds like you followed their directions to the letter. You could try re-downloading the update (BIN file), reformatting, and sticking the new bin file on the card, but I'm not optimistic that it would work. It's also odd that the FW version is 0.00 for the GNSS.

    When I was looking at the Nikon Z lens firmware updates page, I saw that my older lenses for the Z8 use L 1.00 but newer lenses use L 1.10. If you have an older Z lens attached, an update is not even offered so you must first have a newer lens, like the 100-400mm attached. Thanks Steve.

  • @jeffdavis2963

    An FYI with lens update. In 2022 when doing an update on Z 70-200 f/2.8 from version 1.20 to 1.21, the camera would never offer to let me update the lens firmware, only delete the firmware files. I tried 2 different Z9 bodies and 4 different CFexpress cards. Finally opened a case with Nikon Support. After a couple of e-mails the support guy said to make sure that the lens was zoomed out slightly and not set to 70mm. I gave the zoom ring a small turn, powered on the camera, and was able to upgrade the lens firmware without issue. So, if you run into this issue, try zooming out slightly and hopefully it will work for you as well.

I tried getting my Z 400 2.8TC from 1.00 to 1.10 (first lens update for me ...ever) but the update option on the camera firmware menu did not appear? Deleting the LF update file is an option, but installing it is not. Thoughts?

    Thank you Steve. Probably a stupid question. But, are the lens firmware updates the same for all Z cameras. I have a Z9 and Z72, is the lens firmware for a 100 - 400 used on the Z9 the same as on the 2... I'm presuming the lens update is independent of the camera used... but !? Thank you.

    • @backcountrygallery

      Lens firmware is separate from the camera firmware. So, once you update the lens once, that firmware works with all the Z cameras you attach it to.

    As I always store my menu BIN file on the memory card, I always be sure to load the menu settings so my base settings are in the camera before I format the card. Then would resave. Does this still work with firmware updates if menu items have been changed by NIKON?

Is it possible to go back to update C 4.1, then try and repeat the process again to update to 5.0 but this time remembering to update twice? What does the GNCC update do? Could the camera still function with the C 5.0 firmware update but not the G 0.7 >> 1.7?

    I missed the second part also so again, thanks! One other comment. I had the Z 24-120 on the camera body and when I checked the download site I found it needed the lens update from 1 to 1.1 which I did. I then put the 100-400 on and it had LF 1.10 and I had not updated it. My conclusion: the lens firmware resides in the camera body not the lens. Is that correct???

    • @backcountrygallery
      @backcountrygallery  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Lens firmware goes to the lens. The update for the 100-400 was a while ago, so your lens may have had it from the factory.

      With Nikon giving the bin file directly, there's checksum like we would have with a compressed archived file. I'd say you want a "clean" download. If it's jittery, wait for a better connection. (This is supposition on my part, but better safe than bricked)

      A noted in the video, you can't open the BIN file, it's for the camera. All you have to do is drag and drop it to the camera. The first segment of the video goes over it in detail. If you update from the memory card, you should be able to update the GNSS after the first run - I show that in the second part of the video.

    Thanks for this video! My main problem is that I can't drag the bin file into my memory card, any advice? (It just shows a "no entry" symbol) Thanks

      That's weird - is the card formatted? Write protected (SD card)?

      thanks for your reply. I figured it out now, there was a small padlock switch on the back of the card reader!! Who knew!?! @@backcountrygallery

      @@katiehall4482 That's the write protection switch - they are really easy to accidentally slide into the lock position.

    Btw, do recommend formating the memory card in camera or computer?

    I'm surprised you showed using a computer for the update instead of SnapBridge. However, great in-depth info, thanks!

      So many people fight with snap bridge, I think this way is easier. I can't tell you the number of people I've talked to who struggle with it (and I'm one of them at times). :)

      Lately I have been using Snapbridge as well and it s a piece of cake. No futzing with cards and bin files. Maybe I've just been lucky so far.

    Nikon is pretty brave providing firmware as just the bin file. No checksum, not in a zip file that checks the integrity before unpacking. Basically the user has zero way to know if the bin file is corrupt, we're left hoping that Nikon was smart enough to do proper integrity checking of the bin file on camera before doing the update. They wouldn't look so amateur if they provided checksums with every file they provide.

      I was surprised they changed it. Based on the comments I had in the past, expanding the archive was, for some reason, confusing to some people (one of the reasons I did my first firmware video back in 2019). My guess is Nikon was frustrated with explaining it over and over to those who were reading instructions (pure speculation on my part, of course). Maybe in their eyes it's easier dealing with potential problems with download corruption than problems with extracting the file. Who knows??

      @@backcountrygalleryHard to say what Nikon is thinking on that. Locally, I've become so disgusted with NikonUSA lack of competent support I only use the site to get firmware.

    J'ai une question, votre guide pdf pour le Z8, on peut le traduire automatiquement avec google ?
    Ou avez vous déja penser à faire des guides en francais?
    Merci .
