    You're welcome. Thanks for watching! (: There's a reason why I'm mostly a retro gamer. I do play brand-new games from time to time, but they're usually indie games. At least there's still some people making games that I enjoy, even when it happens so rarely.

    Such a beautiful little gem of a game. I remember playing it when I was a kid and I don’t think I could survive the trip back. MSX had many pretty challenging games for a kid. Anyway, I’m very glad for your video, brings back good memories. I used to love this game, it looks as good as I remembered it.

      I know what you mean. I had to play this as an adult to complete it, because the kid me wasn't skillful enough. This game has aged really well and it's fun to play even today.

    First I didn't like Pippols very much - but after some playtime I thought that the game was very decent. I will do a LP sometime about Pippols, because it's a really forgotten gem.

  • @skysands2008
    @skysands2008 Před 11 lety +6

    Yeah. I actually played CoD for only 1 hour. And I sold it. I don't know why people keep playing these modern games. They all the same and they're like movies instead of games. I think Hollywood will create games in the future instead of movies. Because there is no games now. Just a 80% cutscenes game and 20% of the gameplay you press X or O during the cutscene. Bullcrap!
    Now I just play REAL games. NES, MSX, SEGA, N64 and SNES games. Thanks for the nostalgia man.

    Congratulations. Great video as always, specially considering the research you made as some of the games are not so easy to find information. Some of them don´t appear in wikipedia or in list of konami games. For me gradius is their best work, altough i prefer parodius series (the somehow more acessible level of dificulty, coupled with fun sound and funny graphics are a must for me). Glad to see Pippols in the list altough i don´t know it can be considered a shoot em up. It is a underrated classic, and i feel that if it was released in the golden era of the arcade games with a slightly superior difficulty would be a classic. So simple game mechanics yet so fun.

    Smooth scrolling! what trickery is this?

    • @rafaellima83
      @rafaellima83 Před 5 lety

      The same tile is drawn 8 times but with a 1 pixel offset for each one. Change the tiles instead of actually scrolling.

    • @ConsciousAtoms
      @ConsciousAtoms Před 4 lety

      @@rafaellima83 Which was far from trivial to get right... I tried, in assembly, and I found that getting the scrolling to go smoothly was surprisingly tricky. The reason being that every 8th time you change the tiles you also have to scroll them down. This means that every 8th iteration is quite a bit slower than the others. Which in term leads to stutter in the output unless you are really careful.

    • @rafaellima83
      @rafaellima83 Před 4 lety

      @@ConsciousAtoms That's probably why the game doesn't scroll at every frame.

      +Dwedit
      the msx supported scrolling.
      its system had 16k dedicated to it along with its 64k system memory
      Toshiba jumped the gun before the msx standard was ratified and released their machines early with only 16k dedicated to hardware scrolling.
      (16k was still a lot in 1983, in 1983 the new zx spectrum was available in 16k or 48k models for its total memory, so the msx was an exceptional and very expensive machine)
      like most 8 bit machines of its age you can get around its limitations in programming due to their relative simplicity.
      these solution were found for the c64, amstrad cpc, and zx spectrum because they remained popular right into the early 90's
      what gave the MSX the reputation and maybe why you think it didn't have scrolling support.
      is in it's biggest market outside of Japan which was northern Europe and the UK, the games were usually very badly ported spectrum games.
      these ran slow despite the superior hardware, because the msx used its memory differently compared to a spectrum or Amstrad, which meant most of the games were not optimised for the system.
      the other problem was it being superseded in 1986 by the msx 2 and its hardware sales had dried up by then in the uk.
      most of the games we think about that show of what the commodore 64 or zx spectrum capablities, are form the late 80's and early 90's not really from 83- 86 (the MSX's commercial life span.)
      the MSX is sadly a system in the West that never came close to tapping its potential, purely because it didn't sell enough or last long enough

    • @rafaellima83
      @rafaellima83 Před 5 lety +1

      @@cant1rac It didn't support smooth scrolling. You could shift entire tiles around the screen, doing 8 pixels scroll, but not proper 1 pixel scroll.
      There are ways around it obviously, but the hardware didn't support it natively.

    • @cant1rac
      @cant1rac Před 5 lety

      @@rafaellima83 smooth scrolling, what's that, you made that term up. (just joking)
      it had 16kb reserved for scrolling, never said it was anything other than scrolling, not multi directional or anything else.
      A Basic scrolling function with only 16kbs dedicated to it, very basic but a hardware functionality above everything bar the atari and commodore machines. Who's scrolling function are more advanced.
      rarely used because Toshiba jumped before the MSX standard was ratified and it really wasnt enough for the unusual way the msx handled its memory for an early 80's computer.
      infact its listed in the specification of my MSX, in my toshiba user manual.
      the fact is msx 1 was dead more or less by 86, just as people were finding out how to start to get the best out of the other machines. so the market never got there to use/manipulate that functionality.
      so its just a technical not a practical point but a msx has that functionality and if it hadnt of been such a poor seller in the west (the games market that pushed most of these advancments) in sure someone would have found someway around the technical limitations and exploited it.
      as it was later commercial msx port were very poorly optimised speccy ports

    • @rafaellima83
      @rafaellima83 Před 5 lety

      Also...
      F1 Spirit MSX 1 released in 1987
      Jagur MSX 1 released in 1987
      Nemesis 3 MSX 1 released in 1988
      Parodius MSX 1 released in 1988
      R-Type MSX 1 released in 1988
      King's Valley 2 MSX 1 released in 1988
      It's true that, by 89, most big japanese players had already completely moved on to the MSX2 or even bigger things and most MSX 1 releases were by European devs doing the lazy Spectrum ports.

    • @TheMSXChannel
      @TheMSXChannel  Před 3 lety

      No cheats. :) If you pick up the Blue Shoes power-up, you can freely move left and right. The Blue Shoes appear when you collect 4 blue and 4 white coins in a row (check the video at 3:08 mark). There's also Red Shoes that increases your speed, when you collect 4 yellow coins in a row. It's all told in the game manual.
