- I knew I would struggle with this portion of the deck build by myself, but I knew it would be possible to accomplish, therefore I wanted to go ahead and get it done. It wasn't a simple straightforward thing as I was dealing with crooked and un-square 'things' (as I don't know what else to call them). I pretty much knew I would only be able to do my best and make it look as visually appealing as possible, and after some tweaking, I think I managed to make it look pretty decent.
Some videos I cut out a lot of my thought process, and some videos I keep more of it in, and that is the case for this video. I didn't want to make it look like I just put it together no problem, or if it came out horribly, I had no way of explaining why. haha. I think it's so important to find ways around the obstacles and challenges that come up, and there were quite a few for me this time around and I wanted to share how I made my decisions in those instances. In the end, I have a deck that looks 'relatively proper', for lack of a better term. 😉 I am really happy with how it turned out in the end even though the whole front deck boards are basically hiding the entire structures imperfections. (they start out at one end in line with the front deck rim joist, and by the time I was done, there's about a 2" overhang 🤷🏻♀️).
I'm one step closer, and now I have a pretty safe work site for the remainder of the build. AND I have more square footage of flat, comfortable walking surfaces!!! yayyyy!! 😬
I think the next thing to tackle is the insulation, strapping, windows side of things.
Maybe here, maybe there, or maybe everywhere! One way or another I will see you again soon in the next video! 😊
M 💕
When you're doing construction you have two best friends and they are square and plumb. The closer you make the start, the easier and better the rest of the project will be. Great vid!
Nice friends indeed.
square and plumb means zero to $$$$$$ but hign beams make the bucks..got it?
For all your struggles, I know a lot of guys wouldn't put in as much thought and effort that you are to build a little cabin. A cabin doesn't need to be perfectly square and straight, just soundly built to stand up to the elements. No house ever built is perfectly square. Well done.
There are houses that are perfectly square. They are built by carpenters for themselves.
Great job on putting this deck on your cabin. Scares the heck out of me watching you out there with no kind of safety belt on. Watched you build the cabin also and great job. Love the views.
Having that decking on both sides of your cabin is a major improvement... NICELY DONE!
I always say prayers for you that nothing happens and you stay safe each cabin visit. You are by yourself and a fall where your at can be very dangerous. Your determination is impeccable. I believe because you stay physically fit, you are able to do so much more. Your cabin is looking so good and it should withstand the weather for many years. I love your safety in using bigger posts and I do agree with you wanting to add a few more support angles. Smart move. Big Hugs from Santa Barbara, Ca . ❤😎🌹🍷😘🙌
You are doing a fantastic job with your build given the obstacle of the terrane with the slope. You stand up for each challenge that confronts you and should be proud of your accomplishments. You anchored the supports carefully and the deck looks great. More space. Love that your fur babies climb up with you to keep you company. Lenny was enjoying the visit from that Chipmunk. GOD Bless and keep you safe.
I can say that not too much people, is capable to do such work along, Firstly for handling of logs, in the way you do, second the courage you put on it all you show on the video. Great Michy!!!!
Bro she ain't gonna shag you
Hi Michelle
Just a tip for getting framing square. You can use tape measure or just a string. You can measure diagonally from corners to get frame square. Very simple and quickly done. As always can't wait for next video. Cabin is really looking great. It warms our hearts to see them doggies on your pod cast with you and Steve.❤
You are the Queen Carpenter with the drive of a Honey Badger!!!!!! Love this video and the way you broke it up with the dogs , Lenny and the chipmunk, you narration and comedy, the swimming after all that work the day before and Lenny bopping down the steps matched to the rhythm of the music!
Out of the park today Michelle! Out of the park! Keep making decisions to be safe too! 👍🏻👍🏻
The Peace, the beautiful scenery, the animals, the solitude. You are Living right. I love your creativity. Great Video!
I've had to work projects like this by myself at 71 years old. I appreciate the struggles I see you going through as I've been through this rebuilding my termite ridden garage, hosting up 2x8 by 8 ft. long lumber over and over again to replace joist. My hats off to you watching all of the gymnastics that you have to go through juggling lumber to make it stay in place at correct angles.... very impressive. When you work by yourself you have to get very creative and it shows while your working... stay safe and good luck on your project.
I'm sixty eight, and still do all my work alone. I rather enjoy it that way. You learn to be quite creative, as Michelle is.
@@backtothepast1850 I'm 66 retired and live alone in the rural Green Mountains of Vermont. I must say it's quite a challenge working alone hoisting beams, lumber and other building materials up and down ladders and working outside all day building pole barns, wood sheds and other structures, but it's fun.
The challenge makes for creativity. I love that.
Awesome job Girl! ❤❤❤ - and you most certainly live and work "on the edge" ❤ I'm so glad you didn't leave us all hanging 'til next week with a "cliff hanger" episode!❤
Despite your modesty, that's superb craftmanship you're showing here. Respect. Can't wait to see the next transformation of this project, and once it's finished, just think of having a nice meal, a glass of wine or two and....that stunning view over the valley.
What a pleasant surprise..a mid-week update! Thanks for sharing your journey with us!
Turning out great Michy! I love your calm voice on camera, but can imagine the cussing that happens off. But you always come off calm, cool and collected while you overcome each challenge on this build. Its going to be a great place to sip coffee and reflect on life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Take care of those feet and the rest of you!
If she wasn't that calm person before she met Steve she probably got it from him.hes as calm cool and collected under fire as anyone I've ever seen.
Quite the couple and team.
Super video!!! I don't think I ever saw a square building. That's why molding was invented.. you are truly an inspiration. Many thanks!!!❤
Loving the way you get everything to land in the right place and trust your eye to line things up. You do such a great job without any help, altho you might want to use a helper nail here and there. Excellent results, no matter how you do it!!!
Congratulations on completing this deck. You showed great determination, courage and adaptability to do so.
You would never say that to a man.
I'm a glass half full kind of guy. I thought if you fall you'll probably find your other saw at the bottom of the cliff. Still my favorite dance moves are you and Clydes happy food dance. Love your build, you are the only one that you have to make happy on how it looks.
That must be a rush to be up there on that deck, the view, the feeling that you are looking down on all that beauty. Wow, you really just are non stop :) Not sure I believe you even sleep! You and Steve really have a wonderful property set up. That cab on the c is just a piece of heaven you made. We really enjoy watching it come together and keep you in our thoughts that you may safely fulfill your quest. That you for sharing this journey.
Love the deck - great job... It's definately going to be a great asset to your cabin on. the edge....& the trail looks great Steve
I think I'd harness myself to a tree while working on that steep slope. Also you could tie the post off to something so if it does fall you can haul it back up and not lose it down the cliff. Safety first! It's going to be one amazing little cabin with epic views!
I would absolutely recommend a safety harness!
@@jaminova_1969 God YES!!!!!
Thank You ! I’m SO glad that someone does carpentry the same way I do… just make it “look good….and it’s relatively (sort of) close ENOUGH! “ 😂. Bravo ! It’s a gorgeous deck ! Besides… who’s even going to NOTICE if things are a little wonky with a view like THAT ! ❤️
Because that’s what you want in a deck with a 1000 foot drop 🤦🏼♂️
Inspirational. Your confidence and self reliance is pretty cool!
Yet another awesome video displaying your drive to get things done in somewhat precarious positions on a mountain. The tidbit of humor is always welcome as well. Wink!
I think you did an excellent job of hiding the fact that it is out of square. BTW, I'm impressed with how well you handle heights. Now, on to the railings. (Imagine how much easier the siding and roofing would have been with that wrap-around deck. Ha. Live and learn.)
Next time you want to square up a large area try using the 3-4-5 triangle method. (3ft by 4ft by 5ft)
Description
The 3-4-5 triangle rule states when the ratio 3:4:5 is present as the side lengths of a triangle, the triangle is a right triangle. The 3-4-5 triangle satisfies the Pythagorean Theorem which states that the sum of the squares of the two smaller sides in a right triangle equals the square of the longest side.
Keep up the great work! 😊
I was here to see if someone beat me to it but yeah, I believe it's Pythagoras theory.
Really looks nice. Also sturdy and sound. You have really surprised me with what all you can do Michelle. Also how your mind works, when a problem arises, you think about it a bit, and make corrections. Coming right along, and ty for bringing us with you guys. Tell Steve Hi from SE Texas Bear ❤💯🙏
Hi there I have Never saw your videos... I think you have Done a VERY good job on that DECK . And a Pretty Dog you have . And the Best thing I saw No man did that good job just you .... I will keep looking for your videos and watch them as I see them Thanks for sharing your house. God bless you and your family and Dog😊
Excellent video Michy! You should be very proud how that deck turned out. Sure, it might not be 'perfect' but you figured out a good work around and made it look great. I can't imagine the increased amount of difficulty considering what you have available for tools, working by yourself, on the side of cliff, being sore, moving the camera for different shots. Amazing video also, great mix of your thought process, the little squirrels, Lenny, the crows. One of your best videos 😉
looks absolutely stunning.... and so does the deck
Nice...
Double nice
I see what you did there😅
If more ladies worked as hard as she does…the gyms would be empty!
Pretty and not square, i like it😅
So beautiful! Young lady you are such hard worker do great work looks amazing. Have such a beautiful homestead. Thanks for sharing be safe have fun enjoy
Love your channel keep up the good work. Love how you just talk your way through everything right or wrong you just keep doing and that's the best love it. And the dogs too so sweet.
That view! That amazing view! I love it! (and I guess the lake & mountain scenery is nice also.)
The deck turned out really nice even with all the challenges you encountered. I'm sure you feel a great accomplishment in getting it done and how well it turned out. 😅 Steve has done a wonderful job on the pathway as well. The both of you work hard and it shows. Reminds me of my earlier years on the farm. 😃🥂 Cheers for a good job!
Hi Michy, this is my first commentary. I am absolutely amazed watching all your videos on how you have built this cabin so far. The cable system getting all materials to the site is a great way to get things there (although extremely difficult) I admire your determination to get the job done. You have a common sense approach to building this cabin and I can see that the end result will be a sturdy and well constructed dwelling. I look forward to watching your hard work come to fruition. Thank you for sharing your love of animals especially your pets. Keep up the good videos that all your followers love watching. Cheers from Steve in Australia
Your drive and comittment to maintaining you property is commendable.
I enjoy watching your approach to problem solving, but to be honest, I watch because you're a knockout.
I'm sure you already know it, but as a reminder, to make a corner square, mark a point 3 ft away from the corner on one side, and 4 ft from the corner on the other side. Then measure between those 2 points, and if it's square, it should be exactly 5 ft. Hope this helps. 😊 ❤
Pythagoras is in da house!
@jimbop4499 It's so easy, even a child can do it! 😄
Good tip! Does this scale up? So could I do 6ft, 8ft and 10ft? And so on.
@@Ian.. of course....the bigger values the more precision.
Just do it in multiples of 3,4,and 5. Using 3ft as a base would be 9ft...12 ft....and 15ft.
Oh darling I so wish I was there with you I would have so much fun and yes by now you probably know about 3-4-5 always, = A 90° you awsome and gorgeous if you ever need a helper I would love to come out and share the load your friend
Dave. XXX~♥️ ♥️ ♥️
Nice golf swing Michelle! You and Steve picked a very beautiful place on this earth. Thanks for sharing the views.
Wow, Came across your series in building a cabin by yourself and that is amazing what you accomplished. Also where you are building the cabin is on a very treacherous spot on that rocky mountain terrain. Keep up the good work and stay safe in your building progress.
Thanks for all your videos and take care.
Measure your diagonals and mark it at the same measurement that will make sure it is square
Love watching you figuring things out, looks great. Thank you for sharing. Steve can’t wait to do filming lol. Or your next ideal for him to work on
You build like I do…and I always say “good enough for who it’s for”😊
It looks good. Really an amazing view, holly cow and all. You guys are so lucky to have a place like this.
Brilliant job of the decking Michygoss 👍 fixing the gap was an ingenious solution to the base problem 👍👍Ultimately it looks fab😊
Michelle, it looks to me like you've made MAJOR progress (or however you pronounce that word). Your a major step closer to the end. So looking forward to your next video. Thanks for Sharing!
lol... seeing you use a Japanese flush cut saw and then the chainsaw to trim that board you couldn't get to with the circular saw just makes me think of how thankful I am for oscillating tools. You should absolutely pick yourself up one. They are perfect for that kind of situation.
Beautiful cabin and setting btw...
I feel this is one of your best videos! Thank you for sharing ❤
Wonderful solution to the I square deck. Thanks for documenting the journey!!!
It's all about the view. Oh, and the peace and tranquility too! Beautiful locale.
That is SOME tranquilizingly beautiful view, you've got there, congratulations on landing serenity on full MAXIMUM :-)
I think I would move a few boards, and slowly close that gap. I think you’ll be glad you did. It’s coming along now. 😊👍🏻
I enjoyed this video so much. Getting good pointers on building a fishing pier. Stay safe. Thanks
I admire everything you have done here, keep being safe and awesome!
You were right to respect some of the deck boards as it really gave it the feeling of being squareish. I admire your perseverance!
Your skills and abilities are second to none. Amazing. Best wishes from the UK.
You are amazing and the view from your work site is not terrible either. I'm really glad I found your channel... Wow!
So very motivating seeing your work ..very willingly and motivating in all your efforts...and well-done...it wild a very pleasant cabin❤
The deck came outstanding! Going to be a lot safer siding the cabin. Nicely done all the time looking great!
It's one of my favourite videos, great production, even if Steve isn't playing along, the music really sets it off, love the deck 👍
It’s so beautiful and the deck looks great too,SEMPER FI.
As a carpenter, I would say whatever you’re doing is right, it will work out in the end😊
Started binge watching, WOW you're great😊.
Your doing a great job on your build .. Especially by yourself.. Always be safe ..
Your tenacity is admirable! Love your videos😊
Good job. Looking forward to seeing the progress. Amazing view!
Nice job. I love to ride along with your decision making processes.
You did a fine job on that section of deck !
Gawd almost working on a vertical rock slab , dangerous angle !
I like it looks very nice and sturdy !
wow, what a view. you make look so easy. Great job, you are great.
Always look forward to your videos. You are a ray of sunshine my dear
The view is awesome! You are a brave to tackle on this project. Good job!
This video Just about the best 33 minutes I’ve had today , great building. You got in your yoga too
🙋♂️🐈🐈
I have to say when you were finishing that deck.. the view is just amazing.. but I do like the river, too!
I’m amazed at what you do! I just started watching you and can’t explain it but I can’t stop watching you!☺️ I’ve watched so many couples you tube projects and understand the team work involved and experienced it with my wife. But there were days that if my wife wasn’t there? I don’t think I could have done it alone. So in answer to your question in title? Absolutely not! Hats off to you!☺️
Another fantastic milestone. Looks super!
the quality of your storytelling & videography with editing keeps growing, Michelle, Kudos from Ontario!
That view is amazing. All the hard work will be worth it, spending nights on that deck.
This video was very exciting to watch. Thank you for the thrill!!!
Michy you are a beast!!! That was a thrilling video....respect young lady.
You are amazing and put many men to shame with your drive and overall work and the projects that you undertake. Kudos all the way.
Excellent views. The physical setting looks good too
Looks very professional!!! Was good thinking taking the first boards up and repositioning them. Now it looks square.
Another great one..I’m sure that little cabin will be a favorite for many of us..thanks again for sharing.
I think you should build a tree house next to the cabin and run a zig zag -zip line to the big house…
!🪂 💪🚁
Hats off to you girl!! You do amazing and are right up there with the best of us construction workers!! Next time you get out off square...rip a 2 inch strip and attach it to your deck plank making it wider...then trim off the other side at an angle to correct your piece. Then from the corner of the cabin out to the edge will be uniform....😉😀
You kick ass Michy! Thanks for sharing your journey!!
Beautiful scenery from your cabin Michelle
Gotta hand it to you Michelle, there ain't no quit in you. Awesome work once again.
There are times that I wish I could just speak to you with an answer to your questions or just a handy hint. You do amazing. Hugs from the old guy.
Gorgeous,,,,,, & the cabin looks alright too!!!!!!
Your quite a Lady. I really enjoyed wathing you figure this out. Thanks for sharing your adventure.
Nice, nothing better than being in the company of the loving members of ones family and extended family. Hopefully your little friend doesn't startle you when he decides to sit on your shoulder. Hope to see the first time he/she does.
Remember 3,4,5" or metric 30,40,50 triangle gives you a square check.
Great work girl, keeping the creative spirit alive.....
Yet another wonderful video, looking GREAT!
The deck fix worked beautifully! And you tackled that cliff-side hole boring task like a boss. Now, about that railing……..my vote is cable-style to avoid messing with the view.
A double threat..... unbelievably beautiful and unbelievably skilled in the outdoors..... that would make any man live in Paradise
Beautiful!!! Its coming along well!!
Looking pretty good ;) and it's a nice upgrade to the cabin. When there is a will there is a way ;)
Wow just wow so many awesome moments, with a couple of scary moments thrown in. One of your best yet mate.
Wow very impressive young lady ! Lots of luck and be safe ! 77 year old building my mountain retreat off grid.....
Excelent work Michy. You are great worker.
