This the newest video in my Editor Reacts to series. Today I am watching and reacting to What We Do in the Shadows for the first time.
Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav are vampires who are struggling with the mundane aspects of modern life, like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts.
What We Do in the Shadows is a 2014 New Zealand mockumentary[3] horror comedy film written and directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi and the first installment in the What We Do in the Shadows franchise. The film also stars Clement and Waititi, along with Jonathan Brugh, Ben Fransham, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer, Stu Rutherford, and Jackie van Beek. The film's plot concerns several vampires who live together in a flat in Wellington.[4]
What We Do in the Shadows premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2014.[5][6] It was released theatrically on 18 August 2014 by Madman Entertainment and received critical acclaim. The film earned $6.9 million on a $1.6 million budget.
Taika Waititi as Viago von Dorna Schmarten Scheden Heimburg (né von Blitzenberg), a 379-year-old vampire and uptight member of the household. Waititi based his performance on his own mother.[7]
Jemaine Clement as Vladislav the Poker, an 862-year-old vampire a former tyrant with extreme powers. Clement based his performance on Gary Oldman's portrayal of Count Dracula in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992).[7]
Jonathan Brugh as Deacon Brucke, a 183-year-old vampire and "young rebel" of the group who is fond of knitting, erotic dancing, and "being cool".
Ben Fransham as Petyr, an 8,000-year-old Nosferatu-like vampire who lives on the bottom floor of the flat in a stone coffin and generally keeps to himself.[8][9]
Cori Gonzalez-Macuer as Nick, an intended human victim who is turned into a vampire by Petyr.
Stu Rutherford as Stu, Nick's human best friend who introduces the vampires to modern technology.
Jackie van Beek as Jackie, Deacon's human familiar who cleans up after the vampires and connects them with potential victims.
Rhys Darby as Anton, the leader of a local pack of werewolves.
Ethel Robinson as Katherine Heimburg, the human love of Viago's life.
Elena Stejko as Pauline Ivanovich, a vampire and Vladislav's ex-girlfriend whom he calls "The Beast".
Jason Hoyte as Julian, a vampire and Pauline's boyfriend.
Karen O'Leary as Officer O'Leary, a human police officer who gets called to the vampires' house.
Mike Minogue as Officer Minogue, a human police officer who gets called to the vampires' house.

A 'dandy' isn't necessarily an insult; it's a descriptor, here. It's just a man who cares about appearance and fashion.

And the 18th century was the heyday for the dandy.
That's when it really became a thing.

Fun fact - in the second scene with Rhys (werewolves chaining themselves up) Taika told the other werewolf actors to just mess up everything they were told to do and annoy Anton/Rhys as much as possible. Apparently it worked, especially since they were filming very late at night - Rhys was actually getting really agitated while they were filming.

Wellington Paranormal is a great little NZ spin off following the two cops. Very similar dead pan humour

I adore this movie, it's so ridiculous 🤣🤣🤣
Not only is Rhys Darby in this, you can also see Madeleine Sami (Archie) make a cameo as the vampire they meet that says she's been draining a guy for hours and Cohen Holloway (the fisherman Ed is with in 2x8, who he calls Pop pop) plays the werewolf who insulted Viago 😁
Also, Stu isn't played by an actor, that's his actual name and his actual job is what he says in the movie. I believe he was a friend of Taika's that he roped into this insanity 😅
Rhys mentioned in an interview last year that he was actually kind of angry when they were filming the werewolf scenes, as they had to do it at like 2 am and he was cranky from not sleeping and Taika and Jemaine told the other actors to go annoy him on purpose 😅
There are so many fun facts about this movie (I believe they got at least part of their props from leftovers from the Hobbit 😅), you should absolutely look into it.
Both of the spin-off shows are great 😁

Pretty sure that Cohen Holloway has had a small part in every movie Taika has ever made. When he showed up in OFMD I was like FINALLY!

Oh 'Vladislav the Poker' is a play on 'Vlad the Impaler' (aka to some as Dracula)

AKA to history as Dracula, as that was his surname. But he's not the Count, not in Bram Stoker's book anyway.

After reacting to Our Flag, I knew you'd love this movie. 😄
You'll love the show, too. It keeps the same silly energy and expands on the universe. And like others said, Wellington Paranormal, the spinoff show about the police in the movie, is also very silly and fun. Rhys has a cameo in that, too.
Also, you might recognize the swearing werewolf as Pop-Pop the fisherman from the Our Flag S2 finale!

This is one of those movies that would be really easy to get wrong, and be more boring and/or annoying than enjoyable, but it somehow became one of my favorite movies. Don't take it too seriously, and it can be a great time.

Know it's a lesser known series(and know you're watching the series of this!)but definitely try out "Wellington Paranormal"when you have a chance. It's in the same universe, has a few returning characters from the movie and revolves around Officers Minogue and O'Leary, the police who get hypnotized in the house and think the werewolf attack was a dog attack. Has them investigating different monster. Such a great show!

Your reaction was so charming! I just watched through your Good Omens season 2 reaction and was so happy this popped up next. I highly recommend Wellington Paranormal, which is in the same universe and follows the police officers who showed up at the vampire residence. Jemaine Clement was the showrunner for it, just as he was for the first couple seasons of WWDITS! It's so good.

I love that every vampire has a Romanian accent regardless of where they're from. Do you just become Romanian after you've transformed? Is that how it works?

Happy that you are finally in the silly vampires family! I'm so looking forward to your reaction to the show! In my personal opinion, the show is even better than the movie! The first season is still a little slow, ( still great though) but at the second season it really becomes a wild ride! :)
