J-Max is mostly an espresso grinder. Encore is pretty good for pour over or drip coffee. It is not bad at all. I actually disagree with this video. I had tried both.
Both are nice. The JMax tastes better (better burrs, better stability, slow grinding improves taste) but the convenience of the encore is an strong selling point for busy people (it's automatic)

Very helpful. That was exactly what I was asking myself: Is it worth spending the same money on a hand grinder instead of an electric grinder and losing the convenience. The video convinced me to buy a hand grinder.
When I searched this comparison I absolutely did not expect an actual video on it to come up. (Although I did search K-Max)

Absolutely true. V60 should not be used to compare taste between grinders! It's hugely inconsistent
People who routinely want to just click a button and have a coffee would probably prefer an espresso capsule machine anyway
Looking at the J Ultra now and you helped me make the decision to buy it. Not the same model but in the same family. I would be using it mostly for espresso but also some pour-over occasionally. Thanks for your thoughts!

I've just got the J-Max for espresso... It's so nice that it may replace my Wilfa as my home filter grinder.
I have a Lido 3 and an Encore. I got the Encore for $50 used locally (how could I not?). It works amazingly with my technivorm drip brewer. I use the Lido for pourovers and aeropress for when I have the time.

My poor overs and my shots have come out so much better since I started using these two grinders and that’s no shot.
I had an encore and it broke but it was a damn good one I’m glad it did, because now I hand grind.

You are perfectly right in comparing the two grinders. I wonder if you have a bbe to test jmax against. The grinder on BBE is really inconsistent for me. I don’t have the money or space for an expensive grinder. And jmax might suit my requirements especially because I do both pour over and espresso. Also, made me chuckle when you got the blind test right.
I'd love to hear all your settings you use for the J Max. Aeropress and espresso please :)
It all depends on the dose ie the amount of coffee I'm using for a brew. I haven't experimented much with espresso, but for pourovers or aeropress, I'm using anywhere between 235 to 300 clicks
If your goal with the manual grinder is making pour overs wouldn't the k-max be a better fit and even better tasting coffee? Why did you choose the j-max instead? I'm asking because I'm divided between the two. Thanks
It's a great question. That's the consistent thing I read too ... only get the JMax if you will be using it for espresso while the KMax is designed for the whole range. Makes the whole comparison kind of pointless. I mean ... I guess the KMax would win even harder vs the Encore.

How do you set up your Jmax for espresso and French press?
I have a k+ and an encore. Honestly, when things like, someone who just wants to settle for good enough are said, it sounds pretty pointed and judgmental. I think that there are a large group of people who fall into the category of not so much accepting good enough coffee and more in the category of having a not well developed palate. I really have a hard time noticing differences in coffee. Or at least, I have a hard time expressing them. I have both grinders and and perfectly satisfied with the coffee I get out of both of them. For me, the difference is the hand grinder is something I can have at work and not really disrupt my work day. The encore is something I can leave up on a top shelf, and the two times I make coffee on the weekend, I can break it out make it quickly and have everybody who wants coffee satisfied. With the hand grinder, I'm doing single cups for myself.
no judgement here at all mate, you might just be looking to get offended where there is no offence given. I settle for good enough coffee all the time, simply because I can't make the best cup of coffee possible every time I make a coffee.
The only way to develop your palate is to drink more coffee, getting a coffee tasting wheel will help you as well. Patience is important, so take your time and enjoy the process. Once you'll start noticing differences in taste, you'll be surprised at the difference between the encore and jmax :)
a good match up..both are great value for their intended market. Wondering, did you recalibrate your Encore? Those are pretty fine grounds for #22 click
I did recalibrate the encore, brought it more towards the middle on the callibration ring
Would be interesting to see you compare the j-max to the kingrinder k6 or k5 they are very similar because kingrinder is made in the same factory 1zpresso used to use or sometching like that. They use the same style burrs and have almost identical look/parts but for a cheaper price would be interested seeing a comparison in English since most are in Chinese.

@@tmb-themajesticbeanchannel1746 ok cool would be very interesting video there is only 1 comparison video I could find on CZcams but it is not in English. Because I needed a good burr grinder quick for my pour over I ended up just buying the kingrinder k5 because it was well priced with a burr design that looks very similar to the k series from 1zpresso. So far the coffee has been delicious and I’m pretty happy it seems like a slightly less premium brand but with a quality build and performance for the price.
One question Goran. Are normal grinder for example sette 270 ok for speciality coffee or you need special grinder with special burr. As I see a lot these days that grinder are coming with different bur. You can find more about these burr on DF64 site and one more grinder is like that will get the details later.

@@khankamrankhan it's not a gimmick at all, burrset design plays a big role in coffee taste. For pure value for money though, the sette will do a great job

Ok I just found the video but haven't seen it yet. However, I can say that there is no comparison. The Jmax wins by a mile. Any model in the J series smashes the encore and virtuoso

I see not much difference in speed and in some cases the J series are faster, but with better grind consistency
A few criticisms..
The comparison boils down entirely to a personal choice, and comparing these two items is in my mind pointless. If you want to convince someone one is better than the other, that's fine, as along as they're willing to reconsider what they want to do every morning.
I don't stick to one workflow, so I use both electric and hand grinders on a regular basis, depending on the situation. Sometimes I am too lazy to hand grind, other times I can do without the noise (the encore is the absolute worst sounding grinder out there worth buying). But anyway, I think your point of comparison is not really fair as you are using the baratza as a single dosing grinder, which it isn't. To get the best performance it needs to have a loaded hopper. It would have produced a full dose in half the time of a hand grinder. By single dosing in such a design, most of the beans are airborn and popping around 70% of the time at least. Single dosing grinder solve that problem by deepening the burs so that the beans are feed into a narrow space/channel and stack ontop of each other as they do in a fully loaded hopper, thus preventing them from popping around aimlessly.
ps. Yes I have owned these two grinders along many others ranging for sub-$100 to ones costing thousands (ie. my LWW EG-1). Join my Hand Grinder Discussion Group on FB!
1zipresso tells us that j-max gives more fine particles than k-pro and even jx, so it is not the best choice for v60. It's only for espresso
I just ditched my Solis Maestro grinder (which is basically like the Encore) and ordered the JMax, because the Encore is just not made for grinding espresso. It doesn't have enough step adjustments making it hard to dial in your extractions, plus it does not grind fine enough to get enough pressure. The Encore would probably be ok for pour over and it's great for french press, or drip...but not for espresso.

I think it would have better grind uniformity, so it might be better tasting. I should definitely do some tasting to see if there is a noticeable difference

Used a Kruve Brewler tool to measure the particle size 😊
Kindly note that the advertised 8.8um/click refers to burrs lineal displacement. But as the burrs are conical there's a (non linear) relationship between linear burr displacement and the resulting grind size.
This ratio is unique to each manufacturer and burr set, but from my observations it can be expressed (as reference) by the following formula:
Size in microns = (#clicks x 8.8)/4
For this example, (245 clicks x 8.8)/4 = 539 (which is close to the actual measurement with the Kruve)
For most 1Zpresso grinders the displacement/grind size ratio is around 4:1 and this number is a geometric ratio

I don't agree J-Max is mid-range. It's actually high-end. Yes, it's in the lowest bracket, but nevertheless it's high-end manual grinder.
