  • When Helane and I are not working on Rhythm & Hues, we do various other musical gigs, including every Saturday morning playing with the Cool Hand Ukes at the Harbor Cove Cafe in the beautiful Ventura Harbor. I've been at this for six years and I couldn’t think of a better way to spend your Saturday morning.
Today we pay tribute to a band I love from a city I love, Columbus, Ohio, McGuffey Lane. “People Like You” is a great song written by the late Bobby Gene McNelly. When I lived in Columbus the band consisted of Steve George Reis, Terry Efaw, Dickie Smith, Steven “Tebes” Douglas and my buddy and band leader John Schwab, who has been carrying the McGuffey Lane flame to the masses for the last 40 years, and they're still rocking hard.
The words are simple and to the point, “people like you make life nice for people like me.” That kind of says it all right there.
Thank you, Donna 2 & Carrie for videotaping and if anybody locally wants to join us, we do this every Saturday morning. I've got 15 songbooks you can download for free on my website garyballen.com/
And those of you that don't know, check out my latest project with Helane Freeman, we worked together back in the day, me at Ruthless Records and her at Priority Records. She was the art director for the “Straight Outta Compton” album cover.
