These guys are potentially all over the place in _Tomb of Annihilation_ and can be a great way to give your party a minor leg-up in that meat grinder of a campaign, since you can assign whatever you feel like giving as a DM. For example, you could let the charm recipient cast _detect magic_ at will for the next few days.

Like if a Dwarf druid wanted to study them he could Meld into Stone to witness them swimming through solid rock. I also feel like they would be the heralds of powerful elementals whom have been summoned to the material plane. A few would crawl out from their hiding places like insects running from a forest fire when a elder elemental is summoned.

Love them. Fabulous accounting of the Chwinga AJ. Can never have too many wondrous creatures to make a pastoral setting all the more enjoyable to explore. I would beef up their magic though. I would give them:
"Snare" (Mainly to annoy greedy hunters and disrespectful herbalists without doing any actual harm to them.)
"Tiny Servant" (Used for manual labor, observation, or as a potential distraction for a friend of the wilds in trouble.)
"Create Homunculus" (Beget Bogun. Would serve as a bodyguard, long-range scout, and a stronger warrior to help remove a more dangerous despoiler of their home if the "hints" weren't coming across.)
"Conjure Elemental" (A ritual requiring six or more Chwingas, with bigger elementals answering the call when invoked by a large enough gathering of the tiny spirits.)
They would only use the destructive power of their larger cousins at the behest of a treant or archdruid, and even then only if they agreed that it was necessary to destroy a threat from the far realm or a similar serious threat.

fascinating! I cannot resist a riddle!! Guess#1- they communicate by scent and their "hair" is the sensory organ they utilize for this process? Trees do this sometimes it seems fitting these charming little folk share this with the nature they are so connected to. Guess#2 - they make sounds that to others sound like normal forest sounds but have meaning among their kind?

I forgot these little guys existed. I feel like this is what my homebrew setting needs. A watchful yet benevolent backround creature for some players. But a definite ally to players of a more creative sort. Id definitely try to establish a connection with these little guys if i were a druid or ranger. And as a dm would set them in areas of strong positive energy like enchanted lakes or trees. Definitely the minion of nature guardians like wood woads and dryads. As a dm id also have the chawinga be a caretaker of these guardians. if said guardian is somehow corrupted the chawinga will gently "nudge" capable adventurers to maybe slay or even cure the corrupted entity. Possibly giving a charm to an adventuring party that specifically dissipates negative energy or influence. Seeing as chawinga are partly ethereal id do this simply by having them accumulate on the party like spider webs theyre walking through without noticing. And finally when they are close enough the chawinga will drop its ethereal form working as a group to quickly snatch something from the players in a game of keep away. Bouncing through rocks ferns and trees luring the party to where they need them to be. The charm the chawinga bestows being left on the item they took. Oftem left hanging from a branch or on a tree stump in the open as the chawinga WANT the player to get it back along with the charm. Personally i dont think id tell the players its even charmed id just let the encounter happen and have the charm activate on its own. Providing some damage immunity or advantages against environmental hazards. Sort of like a boss fight where the fight itself isnt the goal but a distraction from the real target. The charm being the key to a victory that isnt just slaughtering some corrupted water wyrd or spriggan

I've never used these beasties per-se. I did not know they were AD&D creatures when I DM'd. I used them, in my Japanese lore inspirations, as background color... not real beasties or beings. If you are nature-friendly in the East, nature itself shows you favor by you seeing these and the nature gods interact with you via these manifestations.
Well, my version of them was color as a mythology buff... but AD&D now they are real beasties. Cool, I accept that, but if I should go back into DM'ing, they will still be background color. I'd also use these creatures on top of that. That'd be a nice way of trolling DM material reading players.

Cute lil mute smurf like npcs
Rorschach face-changing evil murderous, mob rules strategic, Gulliver's Travels enemies
And of course I've forgotten the 3rd one before finishing the first two lol
EDIT: OH YES! I remembered number 3! If they are that curious about humanoids and what they do like playing wind instruments this is the perfect opportunity to make a PC the Pied Piper!

Super early this time. Also, there are so many way you can use these little buggers. Gain the favor of a group of Chwinga for access to hidden secrets(world lore, charms, arms etc...). This 'should' pump the brakes on any murderhoboism as the party is literally forced to stop and smell the roses. Take a trapped one back to its forest, all the while trying(and likely failing) to understand it. Even a group of chwinga that are totally harmless, but so enthralled by the players, that they cast spells to prevent them from leaving their lair.
