For centuries, scholars have grappled with the inclusion or exclusion of Kainan in Luke 3:36, Genesis 11:13b-14b, Genesis 10:22, 24 and I Chronicles 1:18, 24. Kainan’s authenticity directly impacts our understanding of the genealogy of Genesis 11:10-32, and its relationship to post-Flood archaeological dating. Several lines of evidence support the inclusion of Kainan in the original Septuagint translation of Genesis, Luke 3:36, and even the original Hebrew text of Genesis.
Papyrus 75 (175-225 AD), usually cited as evidence against Kainan’s inclusion in Luke, could have included him, or is, at best, inconclusive due to its highly fragmentary nature. An alternative but equally plausible textual reconstruction of Luke 3:36, including Kainan in P75, will be presented. A “new” discovery, presented here for perhaps the first time in discussions about Kainan, demonstrates that Kainan was included in the earliest legible Greek manuscript of Luke 3:36.
