Former CEO of Apple, John Sculley, starts his own phone company. It's a very interesting turn of events that is beginning to signal a change in the smartphone industry. With an average of 35% market penetration vs 70+% in the western market, the developing market is where it's at.

I had an obi sf1 phone. It stopped working about 2 years ago. Ngl it's box was really cool. It was completely made of glass(actually clear plastic)
as my comment got pinned(thanks), let me tell what problems i faced with it:-
I got that phone from my mom(gift). As it was my very first phone, i really loved it. it stopped working after about an year of use, so i tried to get it fixed. And y'all wont belive that, that phone went to almost every phone fixing shop in my city and no one was able to fix it! It even went to few shops in other cities still no one was able to fix it.......
I still have that phone and it still turns on whenever it is plugged in. It just shows a black screen and nothing happens

yeah they cant fix it cos its os is different I think... you bricked it, you can unbrick it I think if you have original ROM/OS and the device allows it (you need instruction which would be hard to get) but then again why bother with an old phone...

it manages to boot sometimes, always in bios. but touchscreen can't be used there to navigate through the options and it says to us to use volume buttons. And those goddamn fixers jammed and glued the buttons in place

fix volume buttons → apply downloaded android OS/ROM via BOOT screen → phone fixed

I was on the marketing team that launched this phone in Kenya, Africa. It flopped so bad that I no longer put that experience in my CV anymore. It's like it never existed in our market.

As technologies improve, (maybe 10 years) we could have $30 smartphones that perform as well as devices today. It is an interesting question, cheers for the comment!
+stathis tourloukis Might be possible. Lowest grade components assembled in cheapest factory, and just bare minimum functions to call it a smartphone by todays standards.
There are phones that are slightly cheaper, but they are those "traditional" dumb phones. Basically all they have to add is touchscreen, bigger battery, more memory and storage, and decent OS.
Let me get this straight. This new phone company is called Obi, it's designed for developping markets. AndroidOne is also for developping markets.

I don't think so you guys know what I mean... I like android yes, but the system is to Laggy. Every new phone that comes out has a spec sheet showing how much better it is than Apple. And yes, I do love apple. But every single android phone I get, it is good for the first 4-5 months, then after it lag and freezes. I don't understand this. It's the optimization. It's why Apple is smooth because it is a one system formed company and OS. Android has many different compared to Apple, that's why it lags. Like Samsung Galaxy, it gets the update versions later because it isn't the main like maybe a stock android..
Which is why I stated maybe Obi can make their own OS. Obios?

I bought a "budget phone" and I frickin love it. I ended up buying an Alcatel phone.. the Onetouch Idol3, bought it for $130 and it has all the bells and whistles as a high priced phone. It's got an hd screen, 13 mp back camera and an 8 mp front facing camera.

wow I didn't know anything about these phones, this is great for developing countries. They should bring it to America too because not everyone here can afford a high tech phones, like iPhones or Samsung's. there are budget phones but they aren't that good
Not really, most developing countries already crowded with bunch of big brands like Samsung, Sony, HTC even Asus makes the cut. They are making a lot of cheap phones out there so I really don't see the point of how a new brand with new OS gonna stand any chance in this bloody battle.

I'm looking forward to this device in Kenya at these prices. And Obi has already made impact into Kenyan market where the largest market share is held by a chinese company that choose to sell only in Africa, in four years they own the market (Tecno)
budget phones have been getting a lot better as of late. Some great phones are the Asus Zenfone 2, Alcatel Idol Touch 3, the OnePlus phones and the Moto G. Chinese budget stuff is pretty great too, like the xiaomi redmi note 2 and Meizu m2/m2 note but you run some risks when using those in the west.
Rockmandash12 I agree, my only thing is will they get updated 8-12 months from now, this is a common problem for Android and its different OEM's.
