He’s tall
He’s lean
He reeks of gasoline
And he has perfect credit, if you know what I mean
He is the air conditioning man
And he is keeping you cool with his giant fan
And I, on the other hand
I hope this bagel will never end
But he’s your ruthless dictator!
He’s your enlightened plutocrat!
He is dancing on the table in a shirt made of hats!
You didn’t start the bonfire of the vanities
But you’re tossing in our clothes and our humanities
And once a year, we act like we were glad you were born
You always want to bomb the Middle East on the weekend
When we could be cutting grass or eating cheese with your girlfriend
We could learn to read and write in Portuguese or Korean
But you always want to bomb the Middle East
You always want to bomb the Middle East on vacation
When we could just write a novel or recline in frustration
We could occupy the park across the street with a squirt gun
But you always want to bomb the Middle East
It’s crude
It’s rude
It’s full of toxins dude
It’s the underground hero to a special few
It ain’t broke so don’t fix it
And never change
No matter what
Meanwhile I?
I’m going to back school!
I’ve been eating mush all week and it’s time for round food!
But he’s your ruthless dictator!
He’s your straw man strongman!
He’s taking you to the Cinderella’s Castle of Shame at Disneyland!
We didn’t start the bonfire of the vanities
But we’re tossing in our clothes and our humanities
And once a year, we act like we were glad you were born
You always want to bomb the Middle East on the weekend
When we could be cutting grass or eating cheese with your girlfriend
We could learn to read and write in Portuguese or Korean
But you always want to bomb the Middle East
You always want to bomb the Middle East on vacation
When we could just write a paean or recline in frustration
You could occupy the park across the street with a Nerf gun
But you always want to bomb the Middle East
I didn’t start the bonfire of the vanities
But I’m tossing in my clothes and my humanity
And once a year, I act like I was glad I was born
You always want to bomb the Middle East on the weekend
When we could be cutting grass or planting trees with your girlfriend
We could learn to read and write in Cantonese or Italian
But you always want to bomb the Middle East
You always want to bomb the Middle East on vacation
When we could just write a poem or recline in frustration
You could occupy the park across the street with a squirt gun
But you always want to bomb the Middle East

I really like this song. The repetitive but inconsistent lyrics gives a fun feeling of the singer improvising the song as it goes.
Me: man can we just go to the park or something
Obama:
Just heard this tune for the first time today on the radio…couldn’t stop laughing, great job guys.

Can’t stop singing along. It’s so infectious I need a vaccination

This song is like if somebody did System of a Down in the style of the B-52’s.
This song makes my bike rides so fun.
I was introduced to this song because it was used as a break after a story about opec reducing production and crude oil prices increasing on Marketplace. And it was the only good thing about the story.
Thank you! 🎉

Alright , might be dense, but can someone just plainly tell me if this is a some kind of post-ironic protest song or something? I am not that bright
not post-ironic, this is just straight up, classic irony
specifically the chorus is making you imagine a powerful western politician/oil tycoon is just some guy in their friend group, who theyre complaining about because instead of wanting to be normal or have fun and live life he's obsessed with bombing the middle east. dramatic irony, it re-frames your normal way of thinking about politicians in a comical way but which also illuminates, besides being evil, how *strange* powerful politicians are.

If you want a serious analysis: at face value it's an anti-war song about some warmongering psycho who shoots down the narrator's ideas for the sake of bombing. But metaphorically, I think this song is actually supposed to just be about a dude who keeps suggesting they do the same thing over and over again and annoys his friends doing it. Furthermore, just based on how the lyrics change slightly from second person to first person ("and once a year, I act like I was glad I was born"), I think the song is ultimately about the narrator himself, mocking himself for acting like an irresponsible and petty tyrant who is unable to change his ways.
@@antgrantranti typed out a very long, detailed explanation of what the song is about but i guess youtube deleted it. basically it’s ironic in that it asks you to imagine a war-mongering politician as a normal guy, someone in your friend group, and he’s just so annoying because instead of wanting to do anything fun or interesting, all he wants to do is b*mb the m*ddle east (censoring bc idk what word or phrase the youtube robot deleted my comment for). it paints this picture in service of highlighting how not-normal, and crazy politicians really are- because we usually think of the people who make these decisions that k*ll so many people as detached from the life we actually experience, we don’t fully appreciate that evilness and insanity - putting that kind of person into a situation that’s more relatable to us as people, like a friend group, helps you to appreciate it. this is the same reason why we see serial k*llers as uniquely evil, but see generals and the politicians who choose to go to w*r, who k*ll hundreds of times more people than any serial k*ller could dream of k*lling, as not only normal, but also sometimes noble. Put a behavior that seems far away and foreign into your day to day life and it becomes suddenly real.
