  • Paul Merriman, founder and president of The Merriman Financial Education Foundation , Chris Pedersen, director of research, and Daryl Bahls, director of analytics, discuss the 2021 Best-in-Class ETFs paulmerriman.c... Paul starts the discussion with a short history of his commitment to providing mutual fund recommendations paulmerriman.c... He makes it clear that they are not CFPs, CFAs or registered investment advisors, and he notes that selecting the “best" ETFs has its limitations and is not a science. Chris then discusses the steps he takes to identify the final choice in each equity asset class, and why he chose several new ETFs, including his expectation for additional return.
Chris, Daryl and Paul answer related questions including:
    • Should I immediately switch old positions into the new recommendations?
    • Should I hold the old positions and start a new portfolio at M1 Finance? paulmerriman.c...
    • Having started an account for a one-year-old child with a small-cap value fund, should I buy more small-cap value or put the next investment into another asset class? paulmerriman.c...
    • Why are you suggesting ETFs with higher expenses?
    • Why have you eliminated the more risky emerging markets ETFs?

Thanks for this presentation. Just heard that Paul was going to do a podcast on M1. Please address their lack of good and meaningful communication issues to help them to improve their product, even if we have to pay a premium.

Any thoughts on how to manage or allocate across multiple accounts where investment choices are not the same. (EG taxable brokerage account, Roth IRA, and 401K)? Thanks for the video. I enjoyed the hot sauce analogy.

Chris, how did you get that shallow depth of field on your video? It is striking. Did you use any special equipment or software?

Hello, I love your videos and the great info you provide, and I don't mean to be critical, but is it possible to make the videos shorter? I don't know many folks who have the time to sit through an hour or more of discussion on these topics. How about 20-30 minutes -- max? Thanks and keep up the great work!

If one were to follow the BIC ETFs to build the UB&H portfolio, it is alright to assume that the international ETFs recommended have a higher weight of companies in Japan compared to other international countries? 4 (AVDE, EFV, FNDC, AVDV) out of the 5 (not AVEM which has China as largest holding) recommended ETFs have Japan as their largest holding. Are we hoping that Japan outperforms in the coming years? What is the rational to hold so many international funds that favor Japanese companies? I was wondering if this would make my portfolio less diverse among international regions. Thank you for your recommendations and the work you all do!

Where do you hold your HSA that allows investing in equities?

@@Texican Hey Jessie. My employer set up an account for me at HSA Bank. HSA Bank offers a sweep feature with TD Ameritrade. I set it up where anything over $5000 is automatically transferred to TD. This avoids additional fees with HSA Bank if you hold over $5000 in cash. Once the funds are in your TD account, you can allocate them as you wish. I believe Fidelity and some others have HSAs as well.
I’ll also note that since I posted the original comment, I’ve changed my strategy to be more aggressive. I’m holding 2 small cap value funds.
      90% AVUV
      10% AVDV

were Fidelity Zero funds looked at or considered?

    • @robertwright8844
      @robertwright8844 Před 2 lety +1

Fidelity's zero-fee funds have significantly fewer holdings than their counterparts with fees. Given that FSKAX and FTIHX have such low fees already, they're arguably better than the discount products.
