    Calm & peaceful :-) As a new comer to turning its great to find someone who can calmly explain in a easy to understand way with no gimmicky sensationalist fast shots & silly music.
    I feel a lot happier tonight just for understanding the difference between spindle & bowl gouges. In fairness I only unboxed my lathe yesterday but caught the bug & addiction back in the early 1970,s in school with a great woodwork teacher. I always promised myself that "One Day" ....... well nows my time. Thank you for making the time to put your stuff out here. Stay safe.

    Not a bore at all Mike. I think it is important for everyone, no mater how advanced, to revisit the basics. We tend to pick up some bad habits that we don’t realize and getting back to basic helps us resolve this. Excellent video Mike. Thank you and Happy New Year.

    Mike this was an excellent video, especially for people such as my self who are new to wood turning. I have been wood turning for only 3 months and have got fairly decent on spindles, but have decided to try bowls, and your explanation of bowl gouges virus spindle gouges was exceptional!!!! When you are new to this type of wood working, most videos go to fast for a beginner to comprehend their movements, your slow and meticulous actions and explanations is exactly what a beginner needs. Keep up the good work and thanks again.

    The first versions of these videos were helpful when I was trying to learn woodturning a year or so ago. Thanks for updating them!
    Another thing that would be useful to me as a beginner (still), would be a video covering the different types of cuts you can do with a bowl gouge. I know there's at least the push cut (which you showed here), the pull cut, and shear scraping with the gouge. Showing how they work and when each one is appropriate would be really useful to someone starting out.
    Another suggestion: maybe you could talk about the proper cut *direction* for each cut, if you don't think that's too basic.
    Thanks again!

    I should have watched this before I messed up scores of wood teaching myself! Is it this way? is it that way? hold it like this? Nope, nope,nope. Finally lucked into the right way and said"Ah Haa!" Then I played with the angles(AFTER) watching a video of yours and found an angle I like. Now I like to beat the wood off with carbide and then fine tune with the BG.

    I was interested to watch this one but all your video's are great Mike. Just watched another video, where the turner said never use a spindle gouge for bowl work and he demonstrated why. When his finger got caught between the edge of the gouge and the wood, very nasty and highly dangerous. Yet again you answered my question, the difference between a spindle gouge and a bowl gouge, many thanks.

    Mike, nice closeups and explanation of BG use. interesting that BG size confusion all comes out of Sheffield and some crazy tradition that made sense to someone sometime in the past. All BGs made in North America, Australia and even the ones made in China seem to be consistent with spindle gouge measuring convention on using the bar diameter: 3/8 is 3/8 and 1/2" is 1/2". I would still prefer a 3/8" BG made in Sheffield to a 1/2" Chinese. 😉 I think your spindle and BG comparisions would have been more helpful showing images of a SG and BG of the same bar diameter.

      Mike Waldt No worries my friend. As I am a beginner it’s really nice to see the closer look of the chisel presentation. Thanks again for all that you do!

    Excellent and informative video Mike. It’s good for even a seasoned veteran to revisit the basics. If you’re happy I’ll add this one to the Skills and Techniques Page on our Club website?

    Hi Mike, Great video, especially the 2 camera angles so where your arms and body are in relation to the piece of wood on the lathe. Cheers, Huw

    Thanks for that Mike, although I like to think I've almost mastered the bowl gouge i still get the cut wrong on occasions mainly due too, as you have pointed out, lack of concentration.

    Please allow me to suggest that the long distance camera is placed at the exact high of the turning centre. Thus eliminating parallex and giving the viewer a better understanding of the position and angle of the tool relative to the piece.

    Hi Mike, I always notice the system you made to hold your sanding discs... it looks like it holds more than one size. Would you be willing to show a close up picture or the specs of what sizes it holds? I would like to build something similar. thanks! love your videos!!

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  Před 4 lety

      Hi Amy, the inertia sander works with a bearing and magnet, and can take up to 75mm pads, and the shank is round not hex.
      Hope this helps

      @@MikeWaldt Thanks for the reply Mike, I apologize I should have been clearer. I am asking about the sanding disc organizer - at least that what it looks like on the back wall of your shop.... with the v slots. Is that holding your various grit discs?

    Hello Mike, I am a beginner at turning and find your videos informative. I was just wondering if there is some kind of relationship between bowl diameters and wall thicknesses.?

    Hi Mike...a very informative vid. thanks for that...did you measure the inside of the flutes on both the bowl gouge and the spindle gouge??in the vid., they looked approx. the same size??

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  Před 4 lety

      Thanks Richard, none of the measurements relate to the size of the tool stated, but really doesn't matter, it just niggles me for some reason .. lol.

    I've watched a lot of videos on the bowl gouge and they say it's one of the tools that can cause serious injury if not used properly

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  Před 4 lety +2

      I would say that is true of any tool if not treated with care and respect.
