I hated that Magician as a kid ..
Magician is the most unique final boss in the series. Usually now, even though the analysis for the final boss is unknown, you can guess that it's their head or heart or the glowing orb on their chest immediately. If you have no prior knowledge of Magician, you would be intimidated and pressured the first time you fight him.

In the anime Paranoia Agent, the state of victimhood rescues people. People suffer from all kinds of stress - sometimes personal, sometimes moral - and and an American-looking dude hits them with a baseball bat. Once they get hit and fall unconscious, no one really cares about their past life. It’s all about helping the poor victims.
I don’t know how much the creator knew about Unit 731, but that anime is obviously tied to the atom bomb. Saying the atom bomb rescued the Japanese from admitting their war crimes may sound obscene, but isn’t there some truth to that? How many people know about the atomic bomb and how many know about their aggression in China in general? For example, in Israeli history students learn about the atom bomb but not one thing is said about the rape of Nanking or Unit 731. We see movies about the Holocaust often. Is there an internationally recognized day for the victims of Japan?
This isn’t about whether America should’ve bombed Japan or not. It’s an interesting, difficult discussion we mustn’t avoid - but it belongs in a different book. It’s about understanding what can drive people to do such horrors. The book doesn’t relish the gore on display. there are some juicy details - babies being bathed in frozen water, a person being constantly executed and somehow never dying, diseased people forced to have sex and then give birth. The point is more about shocking you that yes, people can do these things.
Haven’t we learned this lesson from the Nazis? Yes, we did. The difference is, the Nazis were losers and were the villain. Stories about the Holocaust may horrify us, but we often distance ourselves by painting the Germans as a bunch of villains smokin’ cigars and laughing maniacally. Japan were supposed to be victims. When one country - and the losing country at that - does it it’s just villainy. When a people that are supposed to be victims do it and the winners sweep it under the rug, it becomes scary.
When people object to the ‘tyranny of science’, they may sound like a bunch of crazy luddites. The scientific theory is one of the integral pillars of civilization. It’s hard to imagine where we’d be without science. No idea is safe from corruption, though. The idea of people torturing and inflicting pain in the name of science may seem like recipe for a cartoonish villain in a Hollywood movie.
That’s reality, though. One reason Unit 731 was allowed to remain hidden was because the data was precious enough. The scientists were given immunity if they handed over all the information they received. Many of them went to acquire high positions in Japan, especially academic positions. Even the history of something as great as science is stained by blood.
It’s a perfect example of how horrible war is. Since the data from Unit 731 was pretty useful for biological warfare, many of the masterminds could go on with their lives, being scientists if they handed their data. In a way, they got redeemed because of the action that demands redemption. Imagine if Dr. Mengale was given a high position in a university because he made some scientific discoveries.
The history is fairly brief, since the main role of the book is to deliver the testimonies. It’s a good piece of history, but not a very detailed one. As an introduction into the topic though, it’s good enough. The writing is precise, not too filled with jargon and the story is fairly easy to follow. The book creates a unique niche of itself in the literature of Unit 731 - by providing an easy introduction and a more personal look.
As for the testimonies themselves, what Gold says in the introduction is true. They’re messy, sometimes a bit incoherent. That’s okay since they’re speeches by people who are trying to remember a horrible event from a long time ago. The messiness of it also comes from how the people in the unit didn’t know what they were doing. The testimonies come mostly from low-level workers. The masters weren’t going to risk their position in Japan.
Some testimonies are better than others, but I understand the inclusion of them all. Unit 731 was destroyed. Everything was blown up and footage and pictures were hidden or destroyed, too. We will never have access to the full story, so we must make do with the little we have. Don’t expect to get a coherent story out of these. It’s a collection of anecdotes, but fascinating ones.
They’re presented with a minimalism that’s frightening. Imagine if Raymond Carver wrote a collection of short stories about people in a laboratory conducting these experiments. Then again, what other way is there to tell these stories? They’re blunt. Details aren’t gory, they’re just there. Some horrors cannot be painted with any language. You cannot express being horrified and you can’t tell the full details. Just saying they forced diseased people to have sex is enough to cause a shock.
It’s soaked in pain. Reading this book is both easy and difficult. The language is as minimalistic as a hard-boiled thriller, but to know so much pained was caused by human beings can be too much. As harsh as they are, we need these stories of pain. This book is an anti-war book. If there was no war, it’s possible Unit 731 wouldn’t have existed.
Now, I don’t think we can just lay down our arms and war would be over. Both sides need to lay down their arms for this to happen. Yet what will cause them to do it? At some point, I don’t think ideological or territorial conflicts matter much. We need to stare at the abyss without blinking, without romanticizing it or dramatizing it. We need the cold, hard facts of how much pain war causes. It really doesn’t matter whether Japan should be hated for what they did, or be forgiven because they got the atom bomb. What matters is we humans are capable of producing such pain, but no one wants to suffer through this. Until all of us - and I’m including every single continent, since the narrative is of ‘Evil West’ is too easy to swallow - are horrified by war, it won’t stop.
Reading about Unit 731 is essential. This far into human history, it’s time to know exactly how much pain war causes. War doesn’t only result in people shooting each other. Civilians are murdered in their homes. Great ideas like science are being abused. Schools today preach a lot about the glory of programming and getting your own start-up company. I don’t think this is what will prevent another Unit 731.

Magician is more a scifi thing and has zero scare factor than zombie themed bosses like Chariot and Hangedman.

Chariot
The Chariot is a hulking, gas-masked humanoid clad in a suit of metallic armor. He maims his opponents with a bloodied bardiche. In the original House of the Dead, Chariot's weak point is the exposed right side of his breastplate; with each shot, he vomits green fluids. At low health, Chariot sheds the armor to reveal his true form: a slow-moving, weak, rotting humanoid with pulsating tendrils. Chunks of his flesh may be blasted down to bone, thus killing Chariot.
Hanged Man
Hangedman has the clawed fingers and toes, wings and glowing red eyes of a bat, yet also the body shape and speech of a human, while his head in the original game is avian-like. He is wearing pieces of armor over his body. After sending waves of Devilons at his prey, the creature flies about for an opportunity to swoop for a claw attack. The weak skin tissue and body muscle on his chest serve as Hangedman's weak point.
Hermit
Hermit is a large arachnoid creature, complete with eight legs, multiple eyes, a thorax, and an abdomen. Writhing tentacle-like attachments protrude from its mouth. Information was corrupted so this is all we have for its weakness is its head.
Magician
Magician is depicted as an armored, levitating humanoid with horns and talons. His lower right leg, upper left leg, lower right arm, and upper left arm have exposed muscles and pulsating nerve-like appendages. Magician is heavily scarred and rotten, with worms wriggling in his eye and other parts of his body in its 3rd appearance. Information was corrupted and its weakness is unknown.
Judgement
Kuarl is a headless, armored giant with a massive, bloodied ax. Spikes protrude from its shoulders, wrists and knees. Defying logic, Kuarl can be heard moaning even though it lacks a mouth. The creature will lumber forward, raise its axe, and with Zeal's cry of "Go, Kuarl!" Zeal appears to be a species similar to Hangedman, which are humanoids with wings.
Hierophant
Hierophant is an aquatic creature with sharp teeth, gills, scales and a long tail. Its body is covered with barnacles. On either land or water, it can gouge its victim(s) with its trident, summon Mofish, and leap into the air for a pounce attack. The creature's ribcage opens and closes, exposing its heart for damage.
Tower
Tower is a quintet of Hydra-like serpents: four reddish-bronze snakes, and a larger crested blue serpent. Appearing together, they erratically bob their necks before attempting to bite its victim(s); shooting a serpent's open mouth makes it recoil and damages Tower. The rest of their bodies are invulnerable to gunfire.
Strength
Strength is a massive, shirtless and muscular creature. Wearing a mask, he wields a chainsaw with the word "BLAME" etched on the blade. Axes are lodged in the creature's right shoulder and left thigh. His flesh is lacerated. Strength's head is its weakpoint.
Emperor
Emperor is a levitating, horned transluescent humanoid. It is surrounded by orbs, which revolve at high speed to block attacks. The orbs are launched as projectiles, and can morph into two forms: a lance-like blade on Emperor's right arm; or clones of the dead unique types such as Zeal from Judgment, Hierophant, the blue serpent from the Tower, and Strength. Information about its weakness is corrupted, we probably think the red glowing puslating spot inside its chest isn't the weakpoint!
Death
Death is a hulking, brawny pale-skinned creature in a security guard uniform. His upper body is wrapped in chains. His skull-studded club and most of his body are immune to gunfire; only his head is vulnerable. However, it can be obstructed by Death's club and parts of the environment.
Fool
Despite being a sloth, Fool is agile, using its elongated claws to grasp its cage and slash victims. It lives on a diet of flesh and blood, and can rattle its cage to drop human corpses on its prey. The creature's paws are vulnerable to damage; shooting them causes Fool to lose its grip and briefly stop attacking. The Fool has 3 phases based on its paws. 1. It will use it 4 claws to climb the cage towards its victim(s). 2. It will use 2 claws and move like a monkey if one of the bottom claws are damaged. 3. It will use its 1 claw to jump and slaughter its victim(s) if one of its top claws are damaged.
Sun
Sun is a macabre combination of human, animal, and plant-like elements: its trunk is studded with human faces that vomit blood when shot; its vine-like tendrils attack either directly or from underground; snake-like protrusions reside in the petals, spitting sharp projectiles either in the air or in its prey's face.
Wheel Of Fate/Curien
Wheel of Fate is a metal humanoid surging with electricity, surrounded by a spiked wheel. He has long slicked, horn-like appendages on his head, glowing white eyes, and a sun-shaped emblem on his chest. In combat, he summons projectiles and shields, evading gunfire with fast movement. We don't know its weakpoint besides the sun-shaped core on its chest.
Justice
Justice is a massive one-eyed humanoid with tattered clothing, decaying skin, and exposed sections of muscle. He has a long tongue and sharp teeth. He has two extra arms protruding from his back. His four arms are noticeably shackled. The tongue of Justice serves the monster as its weakpoint.
The Lovers
The Lovers are a conjoined pair of massive tarantulas. Like Judgment from the past, they share a bond, as all harm to the male tarantula (which serves as the duo's weak point) is also inflicted on the female. Just like the case is with a real spider, their exoskeleton is largely invulnerable, with the male using his legs to block gunfire. The female's abdomen being shot by gunfire deals minimal damage.
The Empress
The Empress is a large, armored, blue-skinned creature with glowing-red eyes. Its double-ended chainsaw can be pulled apart into two separate chainsaws. With the exception of its eyes, the creature's body is invulnerable to gunfire.
Temperance
Temperance is an giant obese humanoid with sharp teeth, glowing-red eyes, and tattoos. It wears stretch pants, shoes, and a single fingerless glove ridden with spikes. In combat, Temperance's gelatinous fat protects it from damage. When pursuing the prey in the city streets, it attempts to belly flop or roll into them. Later, when they traverse a clock tower, Temperance stalks them through windows in an attempt to punch them.
The Star
The Star is a pale, blank-eyed humanoid dressed in a red trench coat. He dual wields butterfly swords and features a large scar on his chest. During the battle, he flies around the foyer of Goldman Building in a purple aura. His attacks initially involve charging his swords with energy, before either slashing the victim(s) in front or from above or launching a volley of energy projectiles. At low health, he will attempt to spin violently into the victim(s) like a tornado.
Ťhə ₩øřłđ
Ţhê Wöŕľď is a massive humanoid with dragonfly-like wings and eyes. Frozen from the waist down, the creature uses his hands for support. His entire body (with the exception of [][][][][][][][][]) is invulnerable to gunfire. It has 3 forms but its classified.

I'm playing this game since I was six bro, so I remember magician attack pattern (EXCEPT FOR HOTD4)
Dude just remember the place where he'll be after the camera shift, he is always at the same place
Simple really, once he's about to swipe the player, aim for the calf or thigh muscle as it's the bigger hitbox to cancel his attack.
From my early years of playing I really dont think this is the hardest difficulty setting, actually it seems quite easy
If not for the Magician, this game would've been worse.

I disagree this game is fun and good it has really good story and music. But I do agree magician is really amazing. I wish they give the other bosses more ark.I know magician's supposed to be mysterious and that's the point but I feel like the others got left behind and if they give him more time to develop I feel like they would have been much more interesting.

It’s actually funny and ironic that both Curien & Wesker unleashed a powerful creature that is far from being a simple mindless zombie on the Heroes only for the creature to kill them instead. And then both guys came back more deadly then ever.

Curien really did mean it when he said the magician was his masterpiece.The Magician is kinda like an amalgamation of all the good qualities of the previous bosses:
Chariot: armored
Hanged man: Not armored but hard to hit due to its ability to fly
Hermit: going back to the armored concept but now able to hurl projectiles.
Magician: Armored, hard to hit, able to fly and hurl multiple projectiles at once
I used to play it so much with my brother on the sega genesis...one day we went to the arcade and play it with only 4 quarters and we beat the whole game and there was a lot of people behind us waiting to play lol

The one thing I noticed about Magician is that when you shoot his legs. His damage goes faster. So that's what I've been doing ever since.

It's always great just seeing this game in how its bosses are. The Magician stood to me as of those best final bosses to fight against in an arcade game with Wild Dog from Time Crisis 1 right behind him, both in theme and how he just fights.

Symbolism for the House of the Dead bosses: The bosses are obviously named by the tarot arcana, but are perverted versions of the real meanings of the cards they are named about:
-Chariot: Represents power, self assertion, control and victory. The monster is powerful, yet lacks control, swinging wildly his axe, plus he abuses his power and is not assertive, only settling on control, yet on the dominating and abusive kind, eventually being defeated.
-Hangedman: Represents surrender, willing martyrdom and sacrificing oneself for a greater cause. The monster refuses to surrender even when severely injured, also being unwilling to sacrifice himself, sending his bats to do the dirty work and only caring about himself.
-Hermit: Represents being single and loving it, looking sad and a little sleepy. The monster is the opposite, looking happy, dragging the agents towards him, suggesting a fear of loneliness, and is extremely active.
-Magician: Represents the potential of using power for the good of everyone. The monster has that great power, but uses it for evil.

Secon boss be like
"I can go anywhere with my wings making it harder for him to hit me, guess imma stand here and send my minions straight to his line of fire until they're all dead instead of me just using them for distraction while i move for the kill"
4th boss be like
"I can move faster than the eye could see, better blast this dude with this slow ass projection and a super slow fancy move that can easily be canceled"
I can't really say anything about third boss because he didn't chose to be in a narrow spot where his small weakness can easily be shot
HotD 1 is my favorite of the series, but none of these bosses had the power of House of the Dead 2's STRENGTH! That monster is a real boss! Hard and fast-paced, but that's what made him so cool.
yep Strength from hotd2 had a incredible fast attack speed and he covered well his weak point which is made him quite difficult to beat

Scarlet dawn looks like it will ruin the series. A lot of factors don't make it feel like a THOTD game when you compare it to the previous titles.
