    Awesome job! Im rebuilding an old 60s/70s japanese kit, i kinda wished id some of that as its been fun, im a big RDavidR fan too, oh hey if you ever get bored with the white paint, its the perfect kit to that paint dip method where you put a bunch of paint on top of a large service of water then dip the drum shells into it, would be really cool

    I've done a few kits in the past and I found WD40's rust remover in a one gallon can to work great for the initial rust removal from chrome hardware. Takes a lot of the elbow grease out of the equation. Just thought I'd share this.

    with the puresounds, you have the cotter pins in the wrong holes. you need to put the cotter pin in that thin bit that is outlined with white stitching. theyre fantastic straps when used properly.

    • @JobyP
      @JobyP  Před 4 lety

      As I said I'm no drummer but after the research I did I found literally dozens and dozens of complaints about them being terrible. I'm happy they work for you and maybe I did it wrong. I personally think it's a cool idea with very poor implementation and for me anyway... way too risky to trust not to fail in a live situation. Cheers tho man! Thanks so much for watching and commenting it's appreciated!!!

    tip on the puresound straps: the pin goes between the wite lines and then it holds very securely. It is a little tight to get them in but I never lost one like you say and I use them on all of my three Snares, two of which I take on the road once a week. So definitly cant confirm that statement.

    • @JobyP
      @JobyP  Před rokem

      I’ll be the first guy to admit I’m not a drummer by design… so it DEFINITELY could have possibly been user error but I’ll Tell ya what… it didn’t matter where or how I put those pins it failed… I stand by what I said… if it’s that easy for a novice to mess up I think it’s best to be avoided. I’m happy they work for you and you like them and by no means am I saying you’re incorrect. Cheers thanks so much for watching and commenting it’s very much appreciated!

  • @NuDrums
    @NuDrums Před 4 lety +2

    Excellent work my man! For someone who hasn't done this a lot, I think you did an incredible job. The kit sounds surprisingly good at the end as well with nice attention to detail with the tuning, so kudos for that.
    I think a lot of the pain from restoring drum hardware comes from lack of experience- and trust me, we've all been there. If you try to scrub and mechanically remove rust, it can quickly become a mind-numbingly boring experience as you try fruitlessly to weasel your way into all the tiny nooks and crannies where rust normally accumulates. A nice tip is to use a vinegar, Dawn dish soap, Naval jelly, or CLR bath (there are literally 1000's of products that do the same thing, pick your poison) will take care of most of the rust, which leaves just you with just a clean and polish job afterwards.
    I think the paint job definitely turned out good, at least it looks very nice from the camera. Did you seal the paint with a top coat like polyurethane or lacquer, or was it just paint? My wife and I once restored a shed drum set very similar to this back in 2013 and used some Rustoleum white enamel paint. I can't complain as it worked like a charm, but later I wished I would've put a few coats of poly on, because bare paint can quickly show scuff marks and scratches, should you ever need to throw this kit in the car for a gig.
    I also think the cymbals ended up looking really good, and its weird how on the recording they actually didn't sound half-bad. Most drummers turn their noses up at those kinds of cheap pies, but they forget that post-production processing in the studio can do A LOT in situations like that. The matching hardware was also an added cherry on top of the pie.
    I understand why you didn't touch the pedal... and I don't blame you for letting it be. But, if you ever do want to take a crack at fixing it, I have a video going through how I fix pedals from top to bottom here: czcams.com/video/FXVDDfplOLQ/video.html
    Thanks again for the concise, well cut, enjoyable video. Hope to see more of your material in the future!

      @jaimejacques5639 Před 4 lety +1

      @@JobyP Hey man, like NuDrums said, good job with this. I'm also new to drum building and refurbishing. I'm just piggybacking on this quickly. Engine Degreaser(Wal-Mart, Canadian Tire, etc.) is a product I've had success with when it comes to removing gunk and rust that has started to pit, but as stated above, pick your own poison. I've also had a lot of success with your typical wipe-on varnish. Pretty easy to apply, but I suggest multiple coats with wide foam brushes (think 7-10 coats) to get that "depth look" in the end finish. Bearing edges are tough unless you have a table router that has the capability to take on you different sizes (basically the table itself needs to be wide enough to support the drums to get an even edge cut around the entire drum)

    • @Mike-oz5pp
      @Mike-oz5pp Před 2 lety

      Cb's are Pearl drums! Made in their China drum factory (that is when they did make em). Research shows that they didn't pass inspection as a Pearl drum for whatever reason; out o round, bearing edge damage, so they were sold as cheap knockoffs as CB700's (still Pearl). Alot o company's back when did this. Slap a diff name on damaged goods & sell em cheap. Like the old drums with the name Star, not 100%, but pretty sure they came thru the Hoshino factory (Tama), research ur gear (esp older)if ur not sure who made it, ya might be surprised
