Guys, the song is very interesting with some cultural background. Kalush is a town on the west of Ukraine. It may be called a depressed region more or less. In the years when singer was a child it was defiantly depressed place. Problems with job and young people living the hometown and going to the city or abroads. As I understand the song it is a tribute for mother and music and hometown. It is about music and mother saving the founder of the band. Because he had a hip hop he avoided drugs and other problems. And he had a hip hop and music growing up, because his mom supported him. And he remember how she used to sing to him as a child in traditional way. So he left his hometown he became a musician but he is grateful to mother and homeland for who he is now.

hi from a Ukrainian Canadian, i adored Alina'a song and the performance at Vidber was amazing but , she withdrew and that is that. Really am into the upbeat message of Kalush Orchestra especially at this dark time in Ukraine's history, remember this is a WAR from russia on Ukraine. The War is totaly unprovoked and Ukraine is defending and not being an aggressor in this conflict. As for the song it is not a flute or a soplika but another traditional Ukrainian wind instrument. GO_A got screwed out of winning by the judging panel , which were probably influenced by moscow money in some form, conspiracy theories abound, and hopefully Kalush orchestra will not suffer the same fate but will introduce the world to the extreme talent and beauty that comes from Ukraine, it's heritage and the Ukrainian language. Slava Ukraini

I am looking forward to hearing Alina's song. Luckily Kalush provide with theirs too. The definition of war is "armed conflict between groups", whether the aggressor or not, it means the same unfortunately. Conflict is just a more sensitive term to use, as advised by the UN. I do agree that Kalush will introduce their extraordinary sound to the world, like Shum did last year, and expose the rich culture of Ukraine

KALUSH ORCHESTRA - Stefania (English translation with some explanation for context)
[Stafania is the name of the mother of Oleh Psiuk, the rap singer in a pink hat, and this song is dedicated to her]
Stefania, my mom, my mom Stefania,
The fields are starting to bloom yet again,
But her hair is turning more gray,
Mom, sing me your lullaby once again,
because I want to hear your dear/familiar voice
    [Rap]
She rocked me as a baby, and she gave me the sense of rhythm,
And you can't take my willpower away because she's planted it in me,
She might be wiser than King Solomon himself,
And from all the crooked paths in my life
I still come back to you
She allows me to rest amid a powerful storm and doesn't disturb my sleep,
She catches for me the bullets of my grandma's disapproval,
She's always known me all too well, so she wasn't fooled,
And when she was very tired, she rocked me with a rhythm of...
    Liuli, liuli, liuli, hoy!
    [Chorus]
Stefania, my mom, my mom Stefania,
The fields are starting to bloom yet again,
But her hair is turning more gray,
Mom, sing me your lullaby once again,
because I want to hear your dear/familiar voice
    [Rap]
But I'm not a baby any more, no more, mom, no more!
    That's enough!
However old I am, she still treats me as a child that requires care and resources,
I'm not a child, but she still lives in constant stress,
I was wasting my life away...
And may I be damned for that!
You're still young, mom, you're still in your prime,
And if I won't appreciate your care and support now that I'm famous,
All of you, get me in a corner and accuse me of it!
I will burn to ashes from own love...
    Liuli, liuli, liuli, hoy!
[Kalush have certain lines in their lyrics that are difficult to decipher even as a native Ukrainian speaker, so the last 2 lines here are my personal interpretation]
    [Chorus]
Stefania, my mom, my mom Stefania,
The fields are starting to bloom yet again,
But her hair is turning more gray,
Mom, sing me your lullaby once again,
because I want to hear your dear/familiar voice

this is another strong entry, one of the strongest choruses in the whole contest; love the mix of rap with the singing and more traditional Ukrainian elements - I reckon this'll be in the final, for sure, this feels almost destined to win the televote, so it's gonna really come down to how the juries will respond (especially because they don't have rap entries that high, if past memory serves me)
honestly I loved Alina Pash's entry when I first saw it; there was an undeniable power, pure emotion and confidence behind her performance and the song and I thought to myself, 'this could win the whole thing', I was disappointed when things turned out the way they did

    • @JarydReacts
      @JarydReacts  Před 2 lety +2

The average placement is 15th I believe. Last year the juries placed Italy, Russia, Finland and San Marino at 4th, 8th, 11th and 18th, respectively. Italy 2019 was also 4th, and Turkey won in 2003 with a rap bridge, so it really does depend. This could be a jury pleaser as it's high quality.
I'm very excited to see what could have been with Alina!

Let me tell you the history. Song won the televote with almost twice the votes than the winning song by Alina Pash so it is the rightful representative (although songs like this never do well on Eurovision). At the time, Alina's song (which is much better than this one song-wise) was predicting 8/1 in the odds, however Alina visited Crimea in 2015 (which is illegal in Ukraine) and after that some wild accusation of televoting setup followed, and singer decided to drop from the competition saying that a member of her team went to Crimea and she didn't know (but there was some evidence she flew over Moscow airport in the past), but that she doesn't want to be muddled by a scandal. Alina Pash has Russian origin as many Ukrainians do, thus this was a huge scandal in Ukraine.
After this, Kalush took Alina's place, shortly before the war. No one liked their song in Europe. It's loud, confusing, random screaming mixed with rap, having confusing lyrics about singer's mother, and by any standards you adopt, it really isn't a winning song. Odds before the war were 26/1. Then they started climbing closer as war approached at 19/1, and when war broke out it went to 2/1 and now they are absolute favorite.
They will win, but mainly due to a sympathy vote. And this is sad, not because they don't deserve it. Ukrainians do deserve a win after all devastation. But this victory would again be masked by EU and UK hypocrisy. It will be a pathetic gift to Ukraine after funding the Russian war by buying gas and oil. All the talks and sanctions and nonsense happening in Europe never stopped the money flow from oil and gas to Russia. This war and everything that happened to Ukraine in the past 3 months was fully funded by EU. That's the real history and what's going on. But I am sure BBC will spin this as a win, and Ukraine will take it as a win, even though more and more feel completely betrayed by the West and fully see through its hypocrisy.

    • @JarydReacts
      @JarydReacts  Před 2 lety

They did receive more televotes but when combined with the jury votes, they lost fairly. I will admit, I don't understand the ins and outs of entering Crimea but if that's their law then that's what they follow, so I understood why Kalush are now representing.
In all honesty, the song is great, it has all the qualities I like in an entry, it would have qualified regardless of the current situation and most likely would place high. But I don't think the song is better than Shum, and I wouldn't call it the winner this year. I would hope it gets votes because people love the song, and not because of sympathy. That latter is probably more likely, unfortunately, but I do agree that Ukraine deserve happiness and unity right now.
