Chaos Daemons - Best Units & Army List Building Guide for 10th Edition Warhammer 40k

- Hey guys! Today I'll be going over what units I consider the very best for Chaos Daemons as well as some various tips for writing a competitive army list, neat combos & advice for bringing along Chaos Knight allies. We'll also go over some lists that show off Chaos' true power, including the 2k Chaos Daemons list that managed a 4th place finish (!!!) at the very recent Warhammer 40k Tacoma Open (~400 player event) run by general Matthew Geyer, along with a few lists written by Yours Truly for each Chaos God
We'll go over every Chaos god & what their best options might be: Nurgle with his Rotigus combos, Slaanesh with Shalaxi / Keeper of Secrets to act as hammers, Khorne with his Bloodcrushers + Bloothirsters & finally Tzeentch with his Lord of Change & Flamers - among other unit combos. We'll touch on some of the best allies Chaos has to offer Daemons as well
I'm working on a Chaos Space Marine's focused video that goes over the best Chaos Demon allies to bring along, as well as info for Thousand Sons, Death Guard, World Eaters & Chaos Knights. Please let me know if you have any content in particular you'd like to see, suggestions are always appreciated!
Please consider liking & subscribing if you haven't already, I really couldn't be here without you guys so sincerely thank you all so much for coming along with me!

I think I speak for everyone when I say that I'd like to see some battle reports!
Hey Archon! I'd love to see more of what you do in evaluating lists! particularly lists that focus on, but are not exclusive to, each god. With Nurgle coming into its own and such since this video, I'd be thrilled to see more of your expertise! Us Neverborn need more leaders to teach us!
I always do the monster mash... it's a graveyard smash...😂
Hey I'm running mono Slaanesh, first army and I've only played about 5 games total. Started collecting in 9th, now I have almost 3k Slaaneshi models painted. Your videos are a huge help to me. Thank you.
Slaanesh is incredibly fun & really technical, which I like - so good choice!! Appreciate the kind words though, I have even more Chaos content otw so hope you get some good info out of it!
Subbed at the first video I saw from you. I love your channel name, avatar, production style. Everything about it! You turned me towards Bloodthirster and Flesh Hound allies for my World Eaters. The first time I Deep Striked both into my opponents deployment zone caused a shift in my local club meta!
Welp I'm convinced. Liked, subscribed, and shared.
Love my daemons and I'll be focusing on mastering them. You've given me a lot to think about with your tips and combos. I also never thought about deep striking greater daemons or belakor for the 6 inch combo I'm definitely gonna try a greater daemon monster mash army now. (I already have two of each one)
It's awesome to see a video like this with energy.
I played a 1000p game recently and the highlight of the game for me were: Beasts of Nurgle with Horticulus (really deadly , really tanky !). Unit of Pink Horrors lead by Fluxmaster - they lasted 3 full turns denying an objective from a unit of terminators shooting and fighting them ! They ended up being a lot more durable than a unit of Plaguebearers I had as well. Highly recommend that combo (Fluxmaster + Pinks). Deepstrike them on an objective that is far / difficult to reach and see your opponent grind his/her teeth trying to get rid of them haha. Or even better - buff their shooting by having Lord of Change nearby (within 6"). :)
Hey man this is all signal no noise. These type videos you put out are exactly what I need for designing an army/ preparing to play against someone else
I am in strong support of you getting a discord channel together. You are crushing it man
I never thought about it before this video, but having Belakor on the field turn 1 to protect everyone else from shooting, then using the one strat to put him and someone else in deepstrike at the end of the opponents turn and getting a juicy turn 2 6'' charge with a Keeper, or maybe even a Soul Grinder with Tank Shock for some extra mortals.
Thanks for the tips man, great content!
Belakor is awesome, a 'tech piece' that really let's you take advantage of all the other unique abilities Daemons get access to. So long as he survives into T2 he's pulled his weight by then usually, anything beyond that is just the icing on the cake hah
Appreciate your thoughts man! Keepers are no Joke! Keep up the great work!
As someone who has just started Chaos Demons, this was a great video. Thanks and sub'd!
haven't even watched the video yet and i'm gonna call it. i'm betting you're gonna talk about belakor, bloodthirster, 3x lord of change, and a dozen flamers
They're somewhere in there ;)
@@fatarchon just now got done watching that part ;)
Thinking of trying:
Be’lakor
Bloodthirster
Lord of Change
Shalaxi Helbane
Skullmaster (with bonecrushers)
The Changeling
3x3 nurglings
6 bloodcrushers
2x3 flamers
Skullcannon
Legit that looks like a great list. The only "iffy" choice (imo!) would be Skullmaster. Personally I don't think his stats or abilities are enough to make up for his cost - but, rule of cool > all + I've never ran him yet so maybe I'm missing something :)
Either way that's a legit list, let us know how it works out if you end up running it
@@fatarchon i just figured, having the skullmaster giving devastating wounds to all the juggernauts attacks, with 6 bloodcrushers+master thats 28 extra attacks with devastating wounds. 4/5 mortals on average, might not be worth the 105pts but i thought was interesting. Could take more flamers and/or nurglings instead of him though
@@johnfitzmaurice1028 honestly, give em a shot & see how it all works out! I'd be curious to hear if you felt like he pulled his weight or not. At the very least he's making the Bloodcrushers even meatier so probably not as bad as I'm originally thinking tbh
great video man!! been waiting on this one lol
You rock friend tyvm!!
Loved the video, I've found Fateweaver to be great sat next to Be'lakor having Indirect is really useful. I do play against space marines a fair bit. Being able to counter their indirectly is brilliant
I tried kairos after watching this video and he was mvp from my first game, need to get belakor too
My list uses a a lot of these units haha. Came 4th in a tornament last weekend. My current list is:
Belakor
Bloodthirster
Shalaxi
The Changeling
Slimux
3x3 Nurglings
10 Pink Horrors
3 Flamers
3 Wardog Brigands
4th place is great! I like your list for sure, that's pretty similar to a lot I've built before. Would you change anything for your next tournament tho?
But Shalaxi ? Are she really that great for 400 points ? T10 and 5++ FnP ? Dosent she/he not just be gunned down ? ...
@fatarchon this is my list after a few changes, before i had 2 slaanesh soul grinders and ome seekers intead of 3 nurglings, slimux and the 3 brigands
@spilnukim38 she is amazing, just keep her you opponents movement +18" turn 1 so thry cant shoot her T1 in deepstrike her in t2 6" away, the 5++ makes her a lot more durable the the others
@@spilnukim38shalaxi is quite possibly the best datasheet in the game currently. Rediculously good if played right
Lets goo been waiting for this
Thanks for this. I had a friendly game this weekend against custodes where I just brought whatever I had(bloodletters, screamers, no greater daemons) and got absolutely smashed.
Yeah Custodes are a rough match up. Not sure if you have the models but some shooting will go a long way vs them. Optimally Lord of Change but only if you have the models. If you don't have much shooting, honestly I'd play a scoring focused list & avoid most melee vs Custodes - if you have to get into assault use multiple units so at least one can get some damage in. That or find some sacrificial lambs to screen with / distract while you go score
Thx and another very useful vid. Keep it up
Glad you liked it! Got more otw ;)
You've gained a subscriber and helped convince me to full send a daemons army 👍
Helllll yeah! Feels good to know I'm doing the (Chaos) God's work hah. Legit they're an excellent army so I think you'll be pleased. Ultra unique & customizable, it's like 4.5 armies in one
Welcome to Team Chaos
Happy to be here! Appreciate the warm welcome!
Thank you for these videos i am looking to start my first army and this is very informative. I am trying to decide between csm and chaos daemons. And am having troble.
MONSTER MASH BABY!
Best 40k archetype by a mile
Wooo yeah! currently printing a daemons army and this is perfect
There are some amazing prints out there. Esp from the dude who converted all the Total War Warhammer models, his GUO is one of my favorite models period
@@fatarchon what's the shop?
@@D00M3R_MAVS look up EmanG 3d prints. He has some really good free ones, then his Patreon has some more too. Be aware you have to scale some of them to get the sizes right, practice makes perfect :P
Funny for your sleensh list I was thinking of going the same way. I bought a bunch of the pain boxes a while ago just for the chariots. Just need to 3d print a balekor, 1 more keeper of secrets, and shalaxi helbane. I've always wanted to mower down infantry squads with the chariots lol.
Yeah man I feel like Slaanesh as a whole is being slept on, those Chariots / Cav are damn efficient & then still getting access to all the *other* big hitters on top means you can still pick 'n choose what you need hah
Soul grinders are vehicles, so that opens up tank shock on a possible turn 1 deep strike 6” charge.
Ohoo, that's an excellent lil combo. Anything to give me an excuse to run Soul Grinders lol. Do note you can't DS T1 tho :(
You cannot deepstrike turn one
And you can't do that with balakor because you have to put the soul grinder wholly within 6" and it's base is bigger than 6"
@@fatarchon Ah, I didn’t see anything about turn 2 in the deep strike rules, just read that it was any reinforcement phase of your movement, and thought that gave an exception to the normal walk on from strategic reserves condition. Was it a rules clarification I missed?
@@jacobstacey6911 no worries it's a common mixup in 10th :) Yeah I believe they hid the DS restriction in the Mission or Tournament rules, something like that
More chaos daemons! Would love to see some mixed dameons I play a mix of slaanesh and khorne
Well I love Daemons so, sure! Lol. I do want to show some more competitive builds for them so mixed Daemons is a good call
Monster mashing is the best
Agreed! It'd be a sad sad day if GW ever nerfed it hah
monster mash > all
Any tips on what Daemons to add to a Chaos Knights list??
Now that's a great video idea haha. Obviously Nurglings are great, The Changeling is interesting at only 75pt w/Lone Op so would be excellent for sitting back on an obj. Believe it or not Shalaxi is valid for more threat saturation, Lord of Change might be even better tho. x3 MSU Flamers might be optimal. Mainly looking for cheap board control but you've got a bunch of options to decide on!
Great video man, loving the content! Is this tabletop simulator you're using? I need to get a similar set up just to see how an army would look fully assembled before I go buying, seems really useful
It is indeed! I actually have a vid on how to get setup & playing / making armies in TTS, be sure to check it out!
@@fatarchon Right on!
I’ve been thinking that this army’s enhancements are extremely strong when applied to a greater demon. So I’ve been considering a specific take on Monster Mash to abuse this. Belakor, Bloodthirster with Argath, Great Unclean One with Endless Gift, Keeper of Secrets with Souldrinker, and Lord of Change with the Everstave. Leaves ~450 pts to fill in with troops. I call this the “Sampler Platter.” 😊
This is a list I am now working towards except leaving out Keeper for Shalaxi and still going back and forth about which troops to bring.
Yes please
Hey Fat Archon, loving the content you've been putting out. Is there any chance you could clarify why the lord of change is so good in your eyes? I look at the profile and worry the bolt of change strenth is just too low to handle all the knights and battle tanks of my local opponents, even with its own +1S buff and the relic on one. I guess it is very cheap at 230 points.
I'm building mono-tzeentch and was wondering how effective three lords of change would be in a list, or maybe even 3 plus fateweaver. I do like the strength buff on fateweaver's indirect fire.
Hey man, glad you dig the videos! So, LoC almost completely comes down to that points efficiency. 230pt for T10 18W 4++ is insanely good, one of the better T10 profiles in the game at that cost. For comp play I would 100% bring x2-3 of them, genuinely it will earn it's points back. Besides, what other *ranged* AT options do we have? Soul Grinder & maybe Exalted Flamer otherwise not too many to choose from hah. Toss in the Sustained d3 or Lethal Hits etc & you've got an MVP on your hands. I'd bring Belakor over Kairos but if you're skipping Belly then yeah Kairos would be a great fit too - the 'One Head Looks Back' can be a game winner
@@fatarchon Cheers for that Fat Archon, makes sense. I think Be'lakor would help protect the tzeentch daemons in melee, which is also another weakness, so that's a great suggestion. Looking forward to your next daemon video mate! Btw, you should be doing talk-back radio
Would love an update on this since the dataslate changed everything
Minor thing, the seeker chariot there is a Hellflayer. The Hellflayers are nuts, imo. They just REMOVE nasty stuff.
Tomato tomawto lol 😜 heh nah I agree, the Chariots seem way better than most people give them credit for!
@@fatarchon well, it's 3 different models. Slannessh has 3 base chariots and another with a character
@@570y3n oh I'm just kidding around. Yup used to be like... 5-6 different units but now it's just the 3 I believe? Wouldn't be surprised if they Legend the Exalted ver at some point considering how wonky it is to put together / buy
I’ve decided to go down the rabbit hole and start playing. I like chaos daemons but I have no idea what to buy first. Any recommendations for a small little box to get me going?
Would this tactic be any good?
Use Rotigus with the “denizens of the warp” stratagem to get him just outside 3in and if they don’t position correctly you put it in range of an objective marker.
He has a decent range attack since you can’t charge and he halves the OC of enemy units. With him being 5oc, he could drop in and snipe objective markers from troop units not screening well.
That is most certainly a viable tactic! Heck just use it for the halved movement - put in the right spot you could gimp like half of your opponents army from one dude haha
Juat be mindful of suiciding him for a single turns worth of VP or movement debuffing. There's nuance like everything but sometimes it's better to waddle up the board with the homies ;)
Yah. My list has Be’lakor and a bloodthirster with a deamon prince moving up the board.
Figured Rotigus could be used to drop in their backfield or some side objective and steal an obj from them.
So they can either dedicate fire on Rotigus to clear off from objective. Or have to worry about my Be’lakor Death Star charging at their main force.
@@redluck3048 that's exactly how to use that sort it strategy, seems like you've got the right idea man! A fun meme build might be to also bring a GUO to run with Belakor for the 4+++, though you'd prolly have to DS him because of how slow he is hah
Did I miss you touching on Screamers of Tzeentch? what do you think of them?
I believe they got a price drop since I recorded this but I really like Screamers atm. It almost entirely comes down to their profile but 14" 3W/4++ is damn fair for 80pts (that movement alone can be a game winner). Personally I'd stick to MSU & making scoring their primary focus but yeah, they're better than most of our troops options so can totally have a place in Daemons. Fly's not as big as it used to be but it's still handy to have, esp for faster units
Using your Wise Advice and because I didn't want to just copy that winning list of Matt's I came up with this:
Battle Size: 2. Strike Force (2000 Point limit)
Be'lakor [325pts]: Warlord
Horticulous Slimux [120pts]
Bloodthirster [320pts]: A'rgath, the King of Blades [20pts], Great axe of Khorne
Daemon Prince of Chaos [245pts]: Nurgle, The Endless Gift [30pts]
Lord of Change [255pts]: Rod of Sorcery, The Everstave [25pts]
Lord of Change [230pts]
Lord of Change [230pts]
Flamers x3 [65pts]
Flamers x3 [65pts]
Flamers x3 [65pts]
Beasts of Nurgle [75pts]
++ Total: [1,995pts] ++
My bank account will hate me because I'll need to buy everything but the flamers, and that's because I'm using One Page Rules flamers. They just look better.
Legit that'd be a VERY powerful list, I dig it!! & what's cool is you can soup them with you CSM too so all the better haha. Maaaaybe you'd swap the Prince for a GUO but Prince still has some really good advantages so either/or hah
@@fatarchon As much as I'd love to that would put me over points.
Now of course if I remove a unit of Flamers... then I'm back to 1995 points when I add the GUO and his enhancement.
Any excuse for that smilin' Greater Daemon.
I miss you :,[
What workshop item is that TTS CD collection? Looks really cool.
Most are from the Battleforge pack on the Discord, others are various ones I've found over the years on the Workshop hah. Is there one in particular you were looking for? Def get the battleforge mod of not already - most Daemons came from there!
@@fatarchon Ah, I thought you had a unique bloodthirster scan there, but I see now it's actually Skarbrand. Ah well back to battleforge lol. Thanks anyway (and good video!).
@@aceflashheart yeah I've been on the lookout for a usable Bloodthirster scan myself lol, for now Skarbrand works I guess :P
cant you 6" deepstrike belakor normally as units with aura abilities are always considered within their aura Pg. 38 and Reserve units can still use rules and abilities while in reserves. in the team world championships the TO also ruled that he could 6inch deepstrike
RAW, looks like you're right! Well damn that just makes him even better haha, good looking out!
I wonder suping a Knights list with the 500pts of daemons for scoring, what would you recommend in that circumstance?
That'd be a very good list actually! I'd probably look at The Changeling & Flamers tbh. Basically just need cheap scoring / screening / board control. Otherwise Nurglings would also be excellent
What about the Knight Abominant, to cause more battleshock tests?
*Competitively* speaking, I think the issue I have with the Abominant is that the other knights just bring so much more for points you're paying. That's a clever idea tho, I never considered using it for more battleshock tests but even with that I'd rather have some good ranged options to help shore up something Daemons are normally lacking - the no AP on its main gun holds it back in that regard imho. It having the Psychic keyword is also a pretty big vulnerability, granted I don't see much so it's not as big of deal as I made it in my Chaos Knights review. On the other hand, it's still a giant T12 22W monstrosity with at least some shooting + the morale combo that it's not at a terrible choice or anything - for a more casual match I think it'd do just fine! Esp versus armies that don't have the best armor saves. That's my pov at least, hope it helps :)
@@fatarchon thanks!
What are you using to look at the models like that ?
Tabletop Simulator! Check out the video I made on how to set it up ;)
what is that map callet? that you are using in TTS?
If you're talking about how it has the dice rollers & all that awesome jazz, this is part of the FTC mod/map. Pretty sure I posted a link to it in my 'How to Setup TTS for 40k' video if you need it. If on the other hand you're talking about how I got the huge whiteboard, that's actually just a custom tile I inserted & used a texturized image for -> expanded -> locked into place. Hope that helps
If im taking 2 squads of 3 flamers to deepstrike in, should i take an exalted flamer for one of the squads/make it a squad of 6, or take a 3rd squad of flamers?
I'd rather have x3 squads than an Exalted tbh, an extra squad is basically guaranteed to be useful vs the others only *potentially* being useful! That's my thoughts on it at least
@@fatarchon thought so too, ty
what is this TTS thing and how do I get it and this workshop
Check out my "how to play 40k on tabletop stimulator" video :) Has everything you need to know friend
@@fatarchon awesome I also subscribed excellent audio!
@@donniem7979 appreciate it brother! Got a lot more vids otw so hope you get some good info out of em
I thought kairos will only increase the cost by 1cp, so every time they use the stratagem for normally 1 cp it cost 2cp? That is wrong ? ^^
And how it is, when an armyrule says " u can use 1 stratagem for 0 cp?" The cost from kairos goes on top of that? So it cost 1cp, than 2 and so on, instead of 0 ?
Originally I thought it was like that too but RAW Kairos is unique. Cypher for example from CSM says "until the end of the battle, increase that
Stratagem’s cost to your opponent by 1CP." whereas Kairos instead says "until the end of the battle, *each time* your opponent uses that
Stratagem, increase its cost to your opponent by 1CP." - unless I'm reading it wrong looks like it goes off each time. As for still costing CP, it's in the Developer Commentary FAQ on the last page I believe, basically they say ~" addition comes *after* modifiers". So it gets modified to 0, then you add whatever cost. Works for Battleshock & OC too, any ability that says +1 = you'll always have at least 1OC
Hope that helps!! Glad you could learn a few tricks from this vid too :)
@@fatarchon that makes him pretty good in my opinion. A Loc is still better i think for the points but kairos is worth a try ;).
Thank you, your videos are so good to see what you can do in this meta :)
Keep it on, nice work. 👍
You didn't even actually cover my boi Skarbrand 😢
Hey now! At least I used his model lol
Nah I love my Skarbrand too but sadly for him, Bloodthirster all the way. Heck still run Skar but just use the BT rules :P
I seen a list recently that was belakor, 3 x LoC, 1 x BT, 1 x Shalaxi and then then a couple of squads of flamers.
this list jumped out at me as being really cool from a painter/modeller perspective, as this contains some minis I really want to collect and paint, but had no reason to get before (granted I'm not that hot on the new blood thrister, but the others are beautiful... it's the pose, the standing on fire thing, just looks goofy on the box. I'm sure I'll love him if I own him though, Lol)
what do you think about this kind of list? all I know about it is that Belakor shields the other greater daemons from damage for a turn. I don't know about having 3 x Lord of Chance. If the FW one didn't just get discontinued, then I would have for sure done it, as there are 3 different LoC minis (the named one with 2 x heads, the FW one and the standard one)
I'm wondering if this kind of list might still be good if you drop 2 of the LoC for other things, or maybe just take 1 x standard and 1 x named LoC, then just took some more flamers or something with the change?
I don't know how the list fully works. Like in order for it to be good do you need exactly 5 greater daemons to be shielded by Belakor, or is it a strategy that can be adapted into an army with 1 or 2 fewer greater daemons in it?
I mainly want to collect these pieces for myself, to paint and enjoy, but I also want to get back into playing the game, so having stuff I'm into that I can also play with, and also have good games with (some of my friends like playing the meta stuff, it's what they're into so you need to be able to keep up if you want to play those games) so armies like this jump out at me... they're a collectors dream, but I'd never have imagined something like this to actually be playable and competitive.
If any of you Daemon vets can help me break down this list and make one of the changes I mentioned (either taking 2 x fewer LoC for other things, or taking the named one and one regular, then spending what is left on more flamers or something.
I'm also not sure whaDaemon
Hey man! So that kind of list is VERY common (& has been for a while!). That's your run of the mill "Monster Mash" where you bring mainly Greater Daemons (GDs) - currently it's very strong, but, the meta always ebbs 'n flows so there is always the chance our Codex suddenly makes Troops the best etc.
You do not at all need to run 5 GDs or whatever, just 1-3 will suffice. If you're getting into the army fresh it's ultra important you get what you *like* or think is cool to *you* as again it'll all change one day hah
You might like my full Chaos Daemons Index Review video that goes over eeeeveery unit. But regardless: nah you don't have to run all those hah. I'd say Belakor is an auto include the rest is up to you. GDs just happen to be the strongest sheets atm
@@fatarchon Thanks.
yeah, I've been looking into it more, and it all makes total sense.
the Thrister and Shalaxi are your melee units and the 3 x LoC's and the Flamers are some ranged.
I don't know if Belakor actually does much fighting himself, I think he's mainly there for the auras and stuff.
also the LoC's buff the flamers.
I think I'll likely get the BT, belakor and shalaxi, then just get one of the LoC's to start with.
but yeah man, these are minis I'd want anyway, so it's a good list for me. If the list ends up not being powerful, it's not really that big of a deal.
when is the Daemon book out, probably next year?
@@D00M3R_MAVS yeah that's a great list to start with so I think you'll be happy, the models looks AMAZING too hah. We have a good while before the Index, sometime next year I believe!
@@fatarchon thanks. yeah dude, I'll just have to pick up the 2nd 2 x LoC's later.
I wanted to get the FW one, but it's been discontinued. I might just build the one with the staff as the Fateweaver and then just use as a regular LoC as well.
Is it just the Two heads and special staff that is different? I don't think I'll get any trouble running as the LoC with relic/staff, if they are more or less the same mini.
I seen another guys list in your comments that was running the snail-fella from Nurgle and the Changeling as well. That looked cool, I love both of those minis as well.
Not sure what the Snail does without other Nurgle stuff though. does he buff the Nurglings or something?
@@D00M3R_MAVS I magnetized my LoC, but built him with 2 heads, so I can use him either way. I think it's the staff that's the main diff tho. Slumux is just very efficient points (+ looks sick), he can also put down a shadow of Chaos aura for terrain but otw not an auto include
what program is this?
Tabletop simulator! I actually have a video about how to set it up for 40k, it's pretty cheap too
Best daemons for csm?
Video for that is coming up soon ;)
@@fatarchon legend thanks bro!
Isnt the Tzeentch List too many points? When I build it, its like 2035 points :D
Unless I'm tripping it should be 20pts under hah, then again I'm using the official app so wouldn't be surprised if they messed it up somehow lmao

@@fatarchon Ahhh I see... I added one LoC as Kairos. Makes sense now, thank you
@@oliverrange2085 ohh, Kairos might not be a bad call. Just drop the Exalted Flamer I'd think? & no worries! I wouldn't have been *that* surprised if I made a mistake either lol
