I spammed monster and getting dice. Killing off warriors to get spirit tokens was awesome. I won by a landslide, but it takes fighting 2 monsters per round for 4-5 rounds and having an end game goal that matches this. I was the sea viking so got free merchant ship rewards on 6/8 rounds by going first most of the rounds. Never once visited the sage, i felt like i was missing out but turned out I didn't need to. Probably a first game fluke - will see on the next one.

Played the game over 20 times in our group. Some games were won without the extra worker unlocked. We noticed in 4 and 5 player games that the worker that gets unlocked usually ends up in the less useful spots on the board as there is hardly any spots left. Especially true if the random market tiles that are drawn aren't very good.
Most players that won had the expansion character that allows you to get death tokens and pink dice. It makes getting to the valhalla gods much easier and if you are first to get your pick, then you can base your game around it before you get there which is hugely beneficial. For example i will focus on monsters all game and hope i get the 4points for every monster valhalla god before anyone else. If I have a valhalla expansion character its easier to achieve and if you get it then that person is in the driving seat to win
