GENIUS OR GARBAGE? Specialty Live Shrimp Holder Hooks!

  • I found these bizarre hooks recently and I knew I just HAD to try them! These are Live Shrimp Holder Hooks. Supposedly, they cradle the live shrimp on the hook rather than piercing it so it will stay alive longer while fishing. Let’s see if this crazy invention is genius and catches me tons of dinner fish, or if it’s complete garbage.
Erin is sick this week, so I’m off fishing with my Dad instead! We want to target trout that we can cook up for dinner tonight. It’s a little grey and gloomy out, but that won’t stop us from going out and having a good time!
Please remember, that these are my opinions based on my experience. Just because a product didn’t work well for me doesn’t mean it won’t work well for you. Has anyone used these hooks before? How did they work out for you? Is there a secret tip or trick that I’m missing? Let me know in the comments below!

Great video, it can’t hurt to experiment, I think the fish are feeling those two big hooks and spitting them out right away,
the circle hooks are the best, they don’t feel the Sharp point of the circle hook until it’s too late.
To keep the shrimp alive I always hook the shrimp in the head near the horn in front of the brain - be careful not to hook the brain, they stay alive and move around naturally...
you have a great channel and inspired me to continue to make videos for my channel although I have very little subscribers, hopefully going down south to Florida in a couple of weeks I’ll be using live shrimp and lures.
Thanks again for the motivation, keep up the good work....

@@HeySkipper It seems like the point of the hook lies along the body of the shrimp. Maybe if the hook point was bending lower and fully exposed it would work better. Cuz it seems like the fish would eat the shrimp but when you reel, the hook point is flush against the shrimp.

I have used these hooks since the 9 ties. They do spare the shrimp from being pierced, but do not provide a good hook set due to the way the hooks are positioned alongside the body. Though they are beneficial when a weedless set up is needed in cover.

To get the same effect you could take a circle hook and rubber band (small one). Especially since you aren’t casting far, when I was stationed in Florida someone told me that to keep the shrimp lively and to open the bail. Just close the bail and let the fish hook itself. Do 1 or 2 twists and the shrimp won’t get off when you cast

I love this. Your creative videos are awesome. Fished with live shrimp for years mostly with treble hooks. Works great for sheepshead. I think that hook doesn’t fully allow the shrimp to be eaten. I wouldn’t use them. It’s not perfected yet besides you can easily put a hook in a shrimp w/o killing it. Your test was definitive. Reminds me of the hook setup on some plastics I’ve used for bass esp. frogs lures etc. Love this test and the circle hook is much better. Suggestion, I want you to do another vintage spinning reel video. I love those. Keep up the great work! You know - so much new fishing tackle is geared for the mind of the fisherman not the mouth of the fish.

I sent you guys a comment earlier but I totally forgot to mention the little rubber bands that kids get for their braces those little guys and all the assortment of colors are amazing for exactly what the purpose of that get up is on that shrimp also if you get on and put them around fiddler crabs and just run the hook through not only does the sheep head get irritated in and of inhaling it I promise it will up your hookups probably double and save you a lot of bait because as you probably already know those gators inhale them bad boys.... And of course you can adjust the size of those rubber bands to debate you are using such as live small blue crabs it also helps when using barnacles you can get larger rubber bands and wrap them around several times instead of having two tied them on and like I said when The sheeps or the drum try to pull and it keeps springing back they get irritated and absolutely smash Good luck try it out

Shrimp is my favorite bait when fishing for barramundi fish, I think the type of hook like that is less effective because it takes too long to set the bait, and the size of the bait should also match the size of the hook. different from the usual way, just plug the hook into the shrimp tail, finished. one hook can be used for various sizes of shrimp. greetings from Indonesian fishing vlogger.

I'm not the best fisherman but these hooks seem legit to me. You're fishing them as if it's a circle hook. You're not jogging to set the hook you're just reeling. That's just my opinion. I gotta try those hooks for myself.

The thing with the bobber method is, that it forms a big bow in the line when there is wind. You must reel in all that slack as fast as you can, by the time you are done, there is no time to set the hook. You just reel it and set when you feel pressure. The problem is I wasn’t feeling pressure. It would hit and spit.

This hook only work on large shrimp. But fish like to eat small shrimp, or small shrimp will let the fish swallow. I miss a lot of fish on this hook more than i can get on any kind of hook

    Hey skipper,
I live in a tiny tropical island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean called Saipan. It's kind of hard surf fishing here cause the fish are so picky. What kind of bait do you think I should use? Thanks

If you can find crabs, any kind of small crabs should do the trick. Sorry, I'm not the Skipper

With a bit of common sense, it would work better if the body was under the shrimp .
When the fish comes from behind the hooks will be in the correct direction to hook the fish opposed to being the other way around which is unlikely to hook the fish

    • @HeySkipper
      @HeySkipper  Před 4 lety

I think the hooks need to be a thinner gauge, might get a better hook set.
