    2:49 Hi Mike, I believe you meant it the other way around: one notices immediately how much longer the lugs seem on the *54* [not the 58, where the lugs are shorter with a more drastic drop]. This is the reason why the 54 has a relatively large presence despite its ostensibly smaller size at 37 mm. To clarify the case + the longer lugs make for a larger presence on the wrist, with a lug to lug distance only a hair shorter than the larger dialled 58.
    Having said that, absolutely great review. Detailed and yet entertaining. Liked. Subscribed.

      You are entirely correct. Well spotted.
      I have to admit that I was terrified of uploading this video. Because I was alternating between talking about the BB54, BB58 and the BB plus also juggling images of the 79000, the 79030 and the 79230 and knew I was going to risk dumping a 79030 picture where a 79000 picture should be and so on. Juggling so visually similar watches with similar naming conventions was a bit of a nightmare.
      I even think in the video I also call it the BB 94 and the BB4 a couple of times. 😂😀
      But yes. You are totally right. The BB54 lugs are the ones that feel longer and are what give it that presence.
      Thanks for sharing and subscribing. It's really appreciated.

    There is a good discussion to be had about sizing. I recently got into 50’s American watches, and they’re all around 30mm. That was what my grandfather wore, and he was a 6’2 225lb boxer.
    The insistence on size is often justified in specs, but you can still make a movement accurate and a case waterproof with a 30 or 32mm case (Rolex does it on several models).
    In my eyes, it comes down to how it is worn - lug lengths and bracelets. These American watches were shipped on really odd (to modern eyes) JB Champion expanding bracelets that fill the wrist with eg an enameled plate before it gets to the expanding links. Equally, Nomos watches are “small” in diameter, but long in lugs, to accomplish the same goal.

    This was seriously a joy to watch. Your ability to analyze, discuss and articulate is mindblowing. I really got educated, and I loved it. Thank you so much. So why am I here? Because I went to an AD some months ago and experienced the BB54 magic. It looks small when you hold it in your hand, but on the wrist it just... somehow... grows. It's like an optical illusion. And to be honest it felt quite like when Harry Potter is in the wand store, where his wand chooses him. The BB54 chose me.

  • @mybrainlikesthings
    @mybrainlikesthings Před 10 měsíci +2

    This watch shouldn't work on my wrist, which is a little larger than yours. But the revelation for me is that it does, and that puzzled me. So I compared this with the BB58 and a couple other dive watchs and I found something: On the bezel of the BB54, because the markings are silver rather than gilt, they cannot escape notice. Whereas on the BB58, and like my rose gold bezel Norqain, the markings can sort of blend in to the surroundings, and almost visually disappear. Getting back the BB54, the 5, 15, 25, 35, 45, and 55 minute block markings are larger, which I think makes the bezel and dial marry with each other in a way that the BB58 doesn't. In essence, the BB54 bezel extends the dial, especially at 3 and 9, where bezel markings and dial indices have the same thickness. I measure the crystal (or dial) width at 28.5mm, which is below my personal 30mm threshold. It shouldn't work, if taken on its own. That would be an effeminate size against my wrist, but the bezel is solving that problem.
    The other thing that makes this BB54 more compatible is the 20mm lug width. Usually a balanced-looking watch has a lug width of around half the case width. But on the BB54 it is a little larger at 20mm in the case, but the next link is 19mm, and then 17.5mm, and finally 16mm which runs down to an 18mm clasp. And personally, I wouldn't want to go any lower than 16mm on the bracelet width before it looks too "dainty" for me. Tudor is making something universal and compatible for all genders.
    As for the smaller Nomos, well, what I just said about crystal or dial width is your answer. The Nomos is near bezel-less, all dial.

  • @oysterman962
    @oysterman962 Před rokem +3

    Great analogy and analysis. I'd always admired & preferred Connery as Bond. Well done on your research & knowledge putting together these thoughtful video presentations. After much self debate on whether or not I liked it, having tried it on 2 days after launch. Then afterwards reading & watching so much positive commentary about this release, I went back to an AD to take another look. I put it on the wrist and momentarily changed my mind. My conclusion is that it does look petite when displayed out on the table, especially next to other dive watches. However, it's not too small once on the wrist. The sales assistant then offered it to me to purchase but I declined. As I already own the 58 I don't think it wise to buy another BB in the same colour scheme. If I didn't already own the 58 I would have bought it in a flash. But then again, not sure if the fashion of smaller wristwatch trend is enduring. Being a conservative 40mm sports watch wearer, I'll need a lot of convincing. Perhaps I'll wait until the next iterations which will be Metas certified. I've learned from my past mistakes not to be too hasty buying Tudor Black Bays, as I bought the BB41 when it first launched in 2012, then I sold it to buy the BB58. I also bought the Pelagos 42 and regretted it once the 39 was announced. I don't want to keep 'upgrading', so I think I'll wait until a refined model is launched. It's terrible that watches are like mobile phones. Have to keep upgrading each year! This is an expensive hobby indeed.

    • @Mike.thiswatchthatwatch
      @Mike.thiswatchthatwatch  Před rokem

      You raise a very good point. Tudor is becoming a little like Rolex making minor updates every now and again - overall improving the watch, where people will ask - Is it worth the upgrade?
      Good question.... Personally it will come down to the specific aesthetic of the new watch. Do I like it (significantly) more. If not. Then the old tech is good enough for me. 👍

    • @michaelriera6277
      @michaelriera6277 Před rokem

      For your consideration, the BB54 has a better bracelet, but you are forgoing a lot. I feel 39 mm to be the perfect size for a sport/dive watch. Also, I love BB58’s gilt bezel numerals, red iconic triangle (red triangle and larger crown references the classic Rolex Big Crown of the past) and the snowflake seconds. I even like the coin edge bezel matching the crown. Without these characteristics the BB would be rather dull. Now all these charming characteristics have been removed from the BB54. The lugs on the BB54 are also proportionally bigger giving it a less elegant, squared look. Newer is not always better.

  • @sagaciousid
    @sagaciousid Před rokem +7

    To me the BB58 looks surprisingly modern. It would go well, while riding a Kawasaki Ninja or Ducati Panigale. Meanwhile, the BB54 looks like old stock from the 50s or 60s Tudor forgot about and decided to sell it 70 years later with a new movement and clasp.

    Time traveling to the Connery’s Bond’s beginnings, I don’t think anyone will notice that my 58 has a slightly larger bezel, thicker mid-case, and less bulbus crystal than that on the 6538 or 7922. especially with Ms. Andress about in a bikini. Me thinks those who wore these watches in the late 50’s, early 60’s were far too pre-occupied with their lives (or their missions) to be concerned with the minute differences from model to model; they worked with what they got and accomplished a lot more with it (or despite it). Enjoyed your review of the new, old stock 54.

    If you are looking for a diver both are a must try on they are both amazing and you will know which you prefer when on your wrist.

    Hi, would you prefer yellow markers on the bezel to match the dial, or white ones?

    Superb review. Thank you. Liked and subscribed. Would you recommend selling my BB58 and picking one of these up?

      He he. Thanks a ton - glad you’ve chosen to be a part of the community 👍😀😀😀
      I have opinions about everything, except what other people should do with their stuff and their money. You just got to figure out what feels right for you 👍😀

      @@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch; @jermainewilliams3038 - Did just that. always wanted a non-gilt bezel. The 54 offers a lot of subtle refinements which I found worth the upgrade. Unlike me, I do however suggest if you can wait few months or so as the differential is a bit painful @ $1,000 +/-

      Correct. It passed my mind completely. In my defence, a Tudor rep apparently made the same mistake to a journalist at the initial release🤦‍♂️😀

    I would argue that the original oris divers 65 2015 reissue (black arabic dial) is also a “new old” watch.

      I would tend to agree with you. It definitely does much of the same as the 54 👍😀

      In essence yes. Id guy releases a video today where he says “I am a big fan of 1-1 recreations of original designs”.
      If that isn’t NOS, not sure what is. I thinks it’s a fantastic watch but it is very close to its’ original inspiration…

    you nailed it! an old watch that looks new... that's what many people want but F the fake rivets and F the domed cristal and I'm won!! wait that that would be the omega 2254.50.00 (original to the core, still available at a great price) Sean Connery would agree and F mcfly

    The BB54 is timeless, same as the explorer 36.

    Looks like a cheap dive watch,and cheaper micro brand dive watcher are looking like quality expensive watches,though style is subjective.

      That is correct. When filming I choose not to flash any of my own watches. I have (check out my bb gmt video) and will have videos where I showcase some of my watches directly but I have made an active choice to not have my own collection be the center of attention.
      👍😀
