Food critiques can be demoralizing. My mom says that Dad learning NOT to critique meals helped her become a better cook, because encouragement is always a better motivator than critiques when it comes to something like cooking. Feeding a family is often thankless and demoralizing even when nobody is critical, because it's so much work, prep, clean up, and there are so many elements in society that will tell you you're doing it WRONG - no matter what you do.

Thankfully my dad didn't double down on critiques and criticism, but learned to be encouraging, and my parents are still married fifty plus years later. Learning not to be too critical of each other has helped them stay married when many of their friends from that era ended up divorced.

I have a lot of thoughts about this, haha! Glad your family is encouraging overall.

My Dad used to fry the neck and gizzard when he fried chicken and if I was lucky, he’d get extra gizzards from the butcher because if there was only one...it was his. Lol

One of my most memorable food mpments was the first time i ate summer sausage i bought and cooked on a whim... ended up eating the whole 1800ish calorie sausage alone with nothing else. Best ingredient i have found to this day.

I’m from Alabama and the most memorable meal I’ve had was when I went hunting with my uncle and he made chili out of roadkill (specifically a raccoon) that he picked up on the way to camp. The best part is he didn’t tell us what was in his special chili until after we ate it (This is not a joke unfortunately)

    My two most memorable meals:
    1) I was 16 years old on a trip to San Antonio Aquas Calientes, Guatemala. We weren’t supposed to eat the street food, but some of our group bought some type of Tamale 🫔 off of a street cart and I have been chasing that flavor ever since.
    2) Those very first meals after having my babies. BURGERS. It just hits different when you haven’t eaten in 2 days, and you’ve lost a lot of blood: two HUGE hospital cheeseburgers with French fries and cheesecake for dessert. I think I ate that for every meal for three days. 😂

    I don't think i have a most memorable meal
They're always linked to the occasion more than the meal itself being special😂

For me personally, a memorable meal is not always the food that's being eaten. My most memorable meal was at a public house overlooking Cincinnati and it was beautiful.

I wholeheartedly agree with Rhett about ordering food for an experience. My ex was soooo picky about food, he never tried anything new. It was so boring to go out to new food places with him bc he’d get the same thing every time. Total buzzkill.

Rhett was so right about the food poisoning thing, bc one time when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade I ate a big bowl of oat meal and threw it all up. For the first hour my family thought it was the oat meal that made me sick, turns out it was the worst stomach bug of my life. Even though oat meal wasn’t the cause, my body refuses to let me eat it. I was 7 or 8, I’m 16 now-

I totally agree that sometimes you should order something different for the experience. I can’t specifically remember any single burger I’ve ever had at a restaurant except for this one time with a party I ordered this strange burger that had peanut butter on it, nobody else dared to get it. But I did. And I’ll never forget that experience. That’s what it’s about, not always just having the same thing that you know you’ll enjoy with mediocrity.
