With the sell on clause being 40-50% what's stopping a bigger club offering to buy him for a deflated fee in the future and buying a youth player at the same time for an inflated price to balance out the difference, meaning Marseille would get a better transfer fee and United would lose out?

It's good to clear out the deadwood if you are bringing in better talent. I think we are in a weaker position than we were last season and the one before. We are not getting better quality for replacements.

It is cheap in the crazy financial football world but the 40/50 percent sell on clause could be worth alot if he plays well, improves and gets a bigger move eventually
If he was never going to play for the club again - which looked very likely to be the case - then he has to be sold. We aren't getting a fee that reflects what he could have been worth as a player but probably as much as we could reasonably expect.

Surely the “multiple bid approach” is a reinforcement of the “we are walking away” posture as clubs like Everton who are holding out for £20 million more than we’ve bid. They see us making bids elsewhere and realise we will walk away - after unsettling their player in the process.
