I’m afraid it isn’t. American Sign Language is 75% French Sign Language with the remainder being Indigenous Sign Language and “home signs”-signs invented by deaf people. A person fluent in ASL has the same level of communication with a person who signs Japanese as an hearing America speaking with a Japanese person. There’s regional differences in American Sign Language depending on location. A person from California uses different signs than a person from the South for the same word.
