So my wife walks in the room while I'm watching your video, and she says, "Oh no, not that Canadian guy again reviewing another mic! Give me your credit card! And I say, "not to worry, my flower, I already have an Austrian Audio OC-18, the real thing! So she backs off a bit and then I slam dunk the surprise: "Not only am I not buying a Bai Fei Lis, I just saved us a bunch by cancelling Netflix and HBO Max. This "Canadian Guy," as you call him, has way better entertainment and production values on his channel than the crap we've been paying for! So she settled down and watched what will be known as your famous "Bai Fei Lis" vid and couldn't believe what she has been missing and how fantastic the "Canadian Guy" is. So I thank you for making me look smart and bonding me with my wife. You rock.

You had me laughing the entire time. I've tried a few times to do the old clones talking on screen at the same time but could never pull it off as well as you did here. Great editing to make it look so smooth.

It was complicated. Here’s how I did it, in case you want to try it:
I wrote a script with both parts. I entered it into my teleprompter with color coding. Then I read the one color lines out loud while reading the other colored lines in my head and feeling out the timing. I did one wide shot of each of those.
Then I did safeties of the exact same thing but with a different lens for closeups. This way, if something didn’t line up, I could cut to a different camera angle.
Then I just tried to stay conscious of where my hands were and what I was doing.
The entire things was done in front of a green screen-which made it easier.
The rest was creative editing. It was also important to pay attention to the room tones and make sure they match. But I used UA C-Suite C-Vox noise suppressant to remove all the room tone and overlapped audio transitions. Normally I add room tone on top of it all but I didn’t feel like I had to this time.

I just received my c414, 32mm diaphragm. Comparing to other microphones I own, from top brands, I was amazed. It's really, really good.

Thanks for the comparison! Mic A during your electric guitar test “literally” had some nasty distortion that sounded like the diaphragm was breaking up. Other than that both sounded great! I prefer mic B in this case!
Good ear! That’s actually the API preamp that was breaking up. Mic A was the V10 and it has a hotter output. I didn’t change a thing when I recorded it and realized I was getting preamp grit when I played it back, but I kept it in. I probably should have re-recorded it again and turned down the gain but there was a lot to do and not much time so I left it.

I like the 414 on your spoken voice and electric guitar, but I like the V10 on the acoustic stuff. At least through the AKG K240 MKII headphones I'm wearing for this first viewing. On second viewing with Sony MDR-7506 headphones I had the same final outcome, but the 414 was a lot closer for the acoustic portions. If I were to buy just one I would get the 414.
I fully agree! If I could only buy just one, it would be the 414. Just so you know, it’s the 25mm capsule one. Apparently there’s a new 32mm one. I can’t vouch for that one as I’ve never tested it.

Hey. So sorry. I don’t have any promotional discounts. I’ve tried to get them but Bai Fei Li as a company are very cheap and don’t really want to do things like that. All you have to do is go to AliBaba and search for C-414 microphone or V10 microphone and you’ll find them. I don’t know why they keep switching links. I can’t keep up. So sorry about that.

This question has nothing to do with the video and is totally hypothetical but I was thinking about it… imagine you were in a room, say 3 metres square. You are facing one wall recording a voiceover. Which walls most need to be treated to get the best sound? The wall you are facing? The wall behind?
Or in other words, imagine you’re in the 3m x 3m room. One wall is covered with a blanket, the other walls are normal plastboard. Where in the room and in what orientation/setup would you record for optimal sound? (You can choose the mic)
That’s a great question, Jimi! Well, I would treat all the walls, and the corners with bass traps. But if I could only choose one wall, it would be the one directly behind my back-where the mic diaphragm is pointing. This is where the bounce reflections will be it’s strongest and get into the mic.
A lot of people think that treating behind the mic-the wall you’re projecting to-is the best place but that’s not true. It helps, but it’s not the biggest problem.

Actually, yes. For this video I did it on a green screen! I actually shot the one me, then went and trimmed my beard shorter and filmed the second me. Hahaha.

@TheRecordist Update. The microphone arrived. I had my son install it and record something on Audacity. His voice sounded, rich, crisp, yet warm. Very well balanced. And that's without proper mic technique! I'm excited to try it when I get home later this afternoon.
