very nice video
It’s the fact people actually did them, I’m impressed
Fr fr
Yes, and some of them paid the price with their lives, like Elena Mukhina, who was an awesome human being! (pushed to the brink of madness to work)
Ok but your pfp is so cute
I know. I kept thinking at some point they had to have enough confidence to try ot once
These moves are a one mistake move. Fall the wrong way and you could break your neck or back. My hats off to these ladies and gentlemen

Why do I keep watching these kind of videos when I can't even do a cartwheel..

Oh my god! Thank you so so mucH for all of the LIKES!!! I've never gotten so much before!

The fact that people actually achieved them is amazing …..
Imagine how much people didn’t 😳
I actually did that before but I just didn’t have the cameras on
and most ppl who tried doing them actually died bc they broke their spine.
Elena tried to do the Thomas salto and broke her spine..which cost her the Olympics and her life ( she was paralysed 😭😭)
Yes
My sister and I did gymnastics up until high school. In the uneven bars there used to be a regular move called casting off. It's where you would slam your pelvis and stomach area against the lower bar to get leverage and height to reach the top bar They banned it since it was causing reproductive damage in gymnasts. My sister died of soft tissue sarcoma of the stomach last year and now I have malignant tumours in my abdomen. I sometimes wonder if that constant bruising and injury lead to our cancers.
omg! I am so sorry! Please stay strong!
Damn I hope everything is ok
Maybe a combination of injuries ans genetics, because cancer has a lot to do with genetics. I guess we would have heard about those high performance gymnasts with similar cases if it was just about the constant impact… Aren’t there any other known cases of abdominal cancer in your family?
I really hope you get well and have the best medical support. 😗
Would guess unfortunately yes. Similarly caused my pcos n ruptured cysts
@@jezzybell8137 pcos are hormonal. I believe though that the rupture by the impact is a reality.
The sad thing is I'm sure it took a number of people getting seriously injured trying to do these in order for them to get banned.
Elena Mukhina became quadriplegic from trying to do the Thomas Salto, so yeah you’re right
OMG.
@@1itslaurahere1 It was more of forced on her rather than her “trying to do it”...😥
@@indakgalak that’s true :(

The Thomas Salto and those Roll-outs make me anxious
I can't see what the difference is, but I don't know much about gymnastics.
Yesss. I'm in gymnastics and when we do exercises like that, it's is so terrifying😂. Its like diving in a pool but instead on a mat, the. Catching yourself😂

Didnt someone become paralyzed after doing the thomas salto?
@@jennyoneill8879 Yes, a Russian gymnast. This is the video I watched about her--"Gymnastics Tragedy - The Story Of Elena Mukhina"
"Over the bar dismount" is so scary...
Amazing skill to behold though.
Don’t forget how close the bars used to be
I was so mad when they banned it. I had just mastered it. But as an adult I'm glad they did
What about the sit over the bar dismount
I knew that nothing would happen in the video, but still I got scared... Beautiful, but, too dangerous.
Imagine having skills that were so badass that they were banned. Regardless, of the danger factor, that’s some next level shit.
I'm sad I watched this. I'll never be impressed by gymnastics again. That was just too OP

@@AReallyBoredFlower oh i get it. Sport can be super risky, and those moves are risky for sure. But dang they look amazing.
@@bleb87 That's true, but just because it's banned in competitions, doesn't stop it from being used in shows. I'm sure there are a great deal of people who still do these skills.
@@AReallyBoredFlower really? I didnt realize there were gymnastics shows outside the NCAA and Olympics.
Edit: just looked it up! Theres a Simone Biles: Gold over america tour in my area in october :)
The Thomas Salto just screams "neck-braker"
Yep. Elena mukhina broke her neck attempting this move
@@priscycojocaru9138 okay i guess there might be a video somewhere, so that one thing i wont watch, gymnastics moves gone wrong
@@shazanali692 i don't think there Is a video because She broke her neck three weeks before the Olympics, not in a competition.
That I agree but why is back-to-back banned? The way I see it, a failed execution youd land on your butt
@@TheZachary86 My understanding is scoring is more about executing the skill and the landing flawlessly. There's no point in doing a back to back tumble when you have no momentum. You'll just get more deductions.
I believe scoring has changed quite a bit over the course of a few decades, but Im too lazy to find out and cite for you haha.
They look so so beautiful and those who were able to do them sure are legends and very skillful. But yeah,I can see how they are dangerous. As wonderful as they are, they are not worth an athlete's life.
u can see how they r dangerous? too many ppl died attempting to recreate these single women’s stunts. the first clip was a russian woman preforming a trick no one has ever done before. plenty of ppl died bc they broke their spines in an attempt to also land that trick that’s why it had to be banned. the others were more common tricks and they would just often lead to accidents leading to death. it was clear they needed to be banned.
@@okidgaf7643 It’s just crazy that they need to ban techniques simply because other people aren’t as good.
@@jeffevans4668 but even the best can have a bad day, it's not about being good enough. Look what happened to Simone this week, and she's the best ever. If she'd had one of these moves in her routines, she'd be dead today.
@@mary-catherineelizabeth7277 great reply!
@@jeffevans4668 indeed, aint fair imagine being good only in that stunt then they ban it.
There seems to be some misunderstandings from viewers of this video about why these skills are banned. I'd like to remove these misunderstandings and explain that it is simply not an issue they are dangerous with most of them. There are other reasons.
0:19 *Korbut flip* In 1993 the Woman's Technical Committee (WTC) removed all value elements in the code that started from the feet. They wanted the event to be completely swing based. Furthermore almost no one did them anymore.
0:38 *Mukhina Flip* Same reason as the Korbut flip above.
0:50 *Thomas Salto* This was a rollout skill and was dangerous if the gymnast did not have enough strength to absorb the landing. It was banned for WAG in 1993 and slowly phased out of MAG so neither can do them anymore. Several gymnasts have broken bones doing these skills.
1:10 *Rollout skills* See Thomas salto above.
1:20 *One arm skills on UB* These were blocked in the mid 90s by the WTC and made the same as skills from two arms. This choice was made for two reasons. First the WTC was concerned of inproper physical development in younger gymnasts pushed to do these at a young age. And second, the one arm can change the technique and make the skill easier. Many fans have noticed that one arm Tkatchev on HB can sometimes be done as a one arm Markalov which is easier. It has been over 25 years since this choice was made and it appears set in stone.
1:30 *Back to back tumbling* This technique was banned because of problems with too much stress on the achilles tendons. Note you can still do skills in sequence as long as they go in the same direction (i.e., front layout full punch front tuck 1/2.
1:50 *Over the bar dismounts* These are not that dangerous per say but are banned because they take off from the feet, like the Korbut flip.
2:05. *Sitting dismounts* same as Korbut, Mukhina, etc. Is not swing so can not be performed.
Hope that clears up some misconceptions,
Thanks
Thank you!!!
Thank you you!! I really wondered why some many mistakenly were saying that the Korbut flip was too dangerous, because i didn’t see the danger in it. But I understand the reasoning of banning it because of the swinging argument
Mukhina, a Russian gymnast, broke her neck on the Thomas Salto. Not just any bones, lol.
Thanks for elaborating. Just want to say that the issue with things like Thomas Salto’s being when they “don’t have enough strength to absorb the landing” sounds a bit inaccurate. Seems it’s more precise that if you land incorrectly (on weaker parts of the neck/back, yes) it’s dangerous.
I remember going to London with my school to see Korbut compete in the mid 70s- I’ll never forget how I felt looking at the difficulty of her moves from a short distance away. It still blows my mind - plus she was so charming and came over to us to sign autographs. One of my best memories.
Wow! That's so cool! She was truly great! I loved the artistry that was seen in gymnastics back then. I love to watch today's stars as well but the ability to show elegance and grace along with all of that power and strength that was Truly Amazing!!
Was it at Wembley by any chance if so I was there also
Since the tragedy of the accident of Elena Mukhina became quadriplegic from the tumbling accident in 1980 before the Moscow summer olympics and she was former Soviet gymnast had attempted doing the Thomas salto and she landed and broke her neck. Elena Mukhina was 20 years old when she did it and become paraplegic and in 2005 she died from her injuries at age 45. Elena Mukhina was born in 1960 and she wins in 1977 to 1980.
What skill did she do
@@goodkidjade6697 a Thomas salto. Her leg was not fully healed from being broken but her trainers pushed her to train in a cast and then they pushed the doctors to take the cast off, even though she begged them to let her heal and not make her train. So she performed the Thomas salto with a weak leg and extremely tired from all the training to loose the weight she had gained from the surgery, and broke her neck.
She died Dec 22 of 2006* and she was 46 years of age *not* 45. Please post correct info if you're going to post, please. She also landed on her chin which then broke her neck
My respect goes out to her Rest In Peace Elena Mukhina❤️🙏🏼
@@hannahwalmer1124 excuse me don’t come here and be negative and yes she broke her neck no need to be detailed girl bye 👋🏽
In just one routine, korbut managed to present 2 banned skills. What a legend.
Elena Mukhina, who invented The Mukhina shown in this video, is a very tragic story. Muckina was the world champion when, months before the Olympics, she became paralyzed from the shoulders down, doing not her own, but someone else’s created move. Which move? The now banned Salto, DOUBLED. In one fell swoop, she not only lost her extremely bright gymnastics future, she lost the ability to move anything from the neck down. And she died way before her time, from an infection from a bedsore. Tragic beyond tragic. She was phenomenal in her time. But being pressured by coaching to up the anti more and more, the recklessness and relentless disregard for athlete’s safety that the Soviet coaches and trainers imposed cost her everything. Saddest of all, she said there was a part of her that was actually relieved when she broke her neck. For it meant the brutal training was finally over, and as she lay on the tumbling floor with her neck shattered, she said her first thought was “thank god I won’t be going back to the Olympics”. 😢
The fact that there are banned moves shows how dangerous it really is
Everything in gymnastics is very dangerous. There are no less or dangerous moves imho.
I believe if they are going to ban some moves they should ban gymnastics as well.
But I also believe where is the thrill of people don't do dangerous stuff....
@@sanjeevdandin9350 there are definitely more and less dangerous moves. In gymnastics, in diving, in cheerleading, etc. There are some skills that are far riskier than others. Although all are potentially dangerous and an injury can happen doing anything, some result in way mire injuries and accidents. The Thomas Salto, for example, was finally banned after a Soviet gymnast broke her neck a few weeks the olympics and ended up quadriplegic and died fairly young. She had repeatedly told her coaches and trainers that it was way too dangerous and she would break her neck. And then she did.
Merci captain obvious

usa had nothing good and so the good stuff had to be banned- health and safety don't you know. usa is despised.
Who else has major anxiety even just watching this

Parents. Sigh.
@@LVSH-pr8jd Missed the point of the ban, missed the point of the video, and missed the point of the conversation. It's nice that you're confident of your expertise, though. Best wishes you and, if you are a gymnast, to your parents.
Especially watching the one flip where they land so close to their necks!!!
I still keep thinking about the fact that Elena Mukhina had a broken leg and they still forced her to do the Thomas Salto. That was criminal.
Citations required. I've seen hockey players play with injuries. You either want to compete and win or you want to boo hoo. Gen X are hardcore and younger types need a dummy and a cry closet. usa gets nuke tidal wave soon, bye to manhattan, and fat usa hides in cry cupboard - just wait and see. Oh and cry more.
May your soul rest in peace Elena Mukhina 🙏🏻🥺

@Peter Evans what... the ignorance is astonishing
Olga Korbut is astounding. She did two banned moves in her uneven bars routine: and one was even named after her! It’s disappointing that the judges only gave her silver.
Imagine how much arm strength you would need to have to do a ONE handed giant like u need a lot of arm strength for a regular giant too

It’s like that with dancing too 😂

Also me: breaks all toes, ankles, knees and elbow.

omg that use to happen to me all the time! not the part where i break my bones but literally so annoying!
coming from a gymnast
1:53. Me tryes to get up on the bar only to fail. 1 hour later and I flimsy get up on it only to have it slide out of my hands and end up on my back. Nope I'll stick with football. 😂
I remember in ‘72 at the Munich Olympics seeing Olga Korbut do that back flip off the high bar. It was breathtaking.
Olga Korbut was a breath of fresh air for the sport of gymnastics. We went from the balletic style of Ludmila Toureschiva to the charmingly athletic pixie that was Olga.
That's why I usually "play" that people from older generations are not heroes, but SURVIVALS!, because they saw or went through things that today would be unimaginable to happen.
It breaks my heart knowing so many gymnasts were severely injured doing some of these skills.
My gym still has days to honor the beloved Elena Mukhina, who was paralyzed after a failed Thomas Salto.
1:04 The Thomas Salto is what sadly Paralyzed Elena Mukhina and later killed her
Whatttt😲
Oh my God.. 😮😣
@@Annalenayy yes :c
Don't you think it was more the fault of her coach and the others that demanded her cast be removed and she go back before she was healed? Or ready emotionally?🤔
@@laurametheny1008 yes, her coach forced her to train. So yes I do think it was her coach and other peoples fault
I remember seeing Dominique Dawes repeat Oksana Omelianchik's back to back tumble in i think the '96 Olympics. Something I have never forgotten. It took my breath as well as the audience's breath away. I was not aware that this skill was banned. I did notice that very few people have repeated it since then but I thought it was due to its difficulty. I think that was Dawes in this video. I really couldn't make out her face.
Yup, it was Dawes. The pass that is featured in this video is from the 1992 Dodge Challenge.

It's difficult to quantify the danger of these moves when so much of competitive gymnastics is literally death-defying.
For real. Aren’t most moves so dangerous, they should be banned? 😂
I know, right. Just watching most elite gymnastics routines gives me anxiety. It's a very dangerous sport, period. The fact that it's most often innocent little girls doing it adds an almost sadistic element that really bugs me.
You can say it about a lot of sports. Watching men have to be resuscitated on the soccer and football field this year alone.
Easy for me to say, I spend my days sitting either behind a desk or on a couch. I am in awe of this video but it made me nervous
The fact they didn‘t die while doing this is like unbelievable for me
Dude the gymnasts must of needed 100% confidence to do that
110% lol
1000% actually
Not necessarily 100% confidence that they'd succeed, but rather 0% fear of failure and getting injured. These were risky moves which is why they were banned.
I can only imagine the amount of sweat and pain they had to go through to master these moves. While putting their lives on the line with every attempt.
This old gymnast got a walk down memory lane. Thank you✌❤🎶
I can get why most of these were banned, because they look pretty dangerous. Especially the Thomas Salto, which can easily break your neck if you land even slightly wrong! However, the back to back tumbles are cool, and I think they should bring those back. Today's gymnasts are pretty much doing those anyway in competitions!
Yeah, I totally get roll outs and some of the uneven bar work being extremely dangerous, but what's the problem with back to back tumbling?
@@kvr8286 I think maybe it's a judging thing rather than a safety thing. Maybe doing tumbles back to back is stally for the judges and just doing all your tumbles in 1 go makes the rest of the routine uninteresting
idk lmao I'm not a gymnast, but that's my outside view 😎
Yes, I agree. There was also a life lost to the ‘Thomas Salto’ , which was why it was banned.
We do them in cheer and they're reallyyyy cool to watch
Yeah I couldn't understand why that one was banned. It seemed cool to watch and not anymore dangerous then anything else she was doing.
Dominique Dawes was amazing and the best at back to back tumbling. I never knew it got banned. I definitely can see why the rest did. It's sad to think how many gymnasts had to get hurt for them to be banned. Thanks for sharing!
wasn't 'Banned' as such, they just changed the rules to give fewer points so doing it wasn't worth it, they made further changes that made it impossible later
I understand why they were banned! They can fucking break their neck ! 😭 but at the same time.. just wow. People who done them were so talented!
It is so amazing what people can do with practice, will and courage! Bravo! I admire people who can do things that I can't and it looks like so easy! Respect! 🙏 Thank you for this video! 👍
18 years to train, 10 seconds enough to ruin. Very difficult gymnastics.

Amazing, amazing athletes! Would rather them be safe than sorry though! The stunts on the uneven bars gave me chills! Watching old Olympics footage from the 80's, I wondered by gymnasts didn't do the back to back tumble thing anymore because it's so impressive and a few champions had incorporated those into their gold winning floor routines back in the day. Totally makes sense now that it's banned.
My heart fell like it was about to pop outta my mouth with every jump flip
and twist they all did, no lie they are truly impressive
There simply was and is no one like Olga as small as she is her heart was as big as the heavens and pure gold as her medals. She was simply beautuful!!Oh and amazing!!
Make me anxious AF but the rollouts do look amazing. Obviously hurt plenty to ban them. Korbat's bars routine, for me, has never been beaten. I find it absolutely mesmerising.
I don't think standing on the bar is tacky at all but breathtakingly beautiful especially the Muhkina flip at 0:42. I don't think it disrupts the flow at all. These routines are like songs and some songs have pauses and rests
My mother loved Olga Korbut growing up. I saw that routine at 0:23 just last week. I was amazed by it--didn't know it was banned. I guess that makes sense
I feel we should appreciate that they have the courage to do these skills
Keep in mind for the bars they actually changed. the bars in the 70s were closer together and gymnasts would constantly slam into them. The bars themselves changed so a bunch of bar moves are physically no longer doable, not so much banned.
agreed. and some of those skills shown were not even difficult, just basic.
@@melissafoster3242 I'm late but some of the skills was not banned because of difficulty. A lot of the uneven bars tricks was banned because they was standing on the bar and they wanted nonstop swinging
