- Watch as I show you how to add a personal touch to your handmade cards, by repurposing an abstract warm-up painting. Abstract paintings are a great choice for this DIY project as their vibrant colors, bold shapes, and expressive brushstrokes can create stunning visual elements for your handmade cards.
To start, select an abstract warm-up painting that speaks to you. You’ll want to choose one that is on paper that might include elements like spontaneous brushstrokes, splatters, or drips of paint. Using an exacto knife, scissors, or a paper cutter, carefully cut out unique sections of the painting, focusing on interesting compositions or color combinations.
Once you have your abstract cutouts, it's time to transform them into one-of-a-kind handmade cards. Use blank cardstock or pre-folded card bases as your canvas, and use acrylic gel medium or glue to fix the abstract cutouts onto the front of the cards. You can arrange them in various ways, overlapping or layering the pieces to create a visually appealing design.
The result? A set of unique, abstract-inspired greeting cards that are truly one-of-a-kind. The combination of the abstract painting's bold and vibrant elements with the handmade touch of the cards adds an artistic flair to your DIY cards. Whether you're sending them for birthdays, holidays, or just to say hello, these abstract-inspired handmade cards are sure to make a memorable impression on your recipients. So get creative and give your loved ones a special treat with these unique DIY cards!

Love these! Thank you.
Thanks, Elaine! 🙂
B E A U T I F U L ❤❤❤
Thank you, Syl! ❤️
You have so many great ideas!
Thank you-glad you think so!
Great video! Thanks for sharing. I am addicted to creating greeting cards 😊. Also subscribed 👍
Thanks so much, Sharon! They are fun to create aren't they?
I love the way the cards turned out. Thanks for the tip about providing a transparent sleeve. As for adhering the print, it is much easier to use a tape runner or any double sided adhesive tape.
Thanks, Minna! Absolutely correct on the tape. I've used that as well. Some of my pieces are a little warped because I'm painting on paper and using the gel medium and then pressing usually fixes that.
These are incredible, professional and really beautiful cards. Thank you for sharing your process. I enjoyed this video!
Thank you so much!
These are lovely! I would call these "handmade" rather than "homemade." I make handmade cards and prefer tape runner to glue - easier and way less messy with no drying time. Thanks for sharing this with us!
Thanks so much! Good point on calling them "handmade", I think that is a more accurate word. I picked up some tape to try out with "handmade" cards but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. Thanks for the suggestions!
A good way to get past “fear of the blank page.” The layers make for a richer surface than just one layer painted directly. I enjoy making master boards that will be cut up into little gems. New subscriber.
Thanks, Avanelle! I totally agree-cutting up some of these multilayered abstracts is such a great way to quickly create several smaller beauties. ❤️
Not being a perfectionist is one grief I’ve been spared in life! 😂
Haha, we share the same quality 😂 I'm not sure I have the patience to be a perfectionist.
Funny you did this video... I think it was in one of your previous videos that i cottoned onto the concept of using a little cut out square to help me see areas of interest in my little warm ups... and what you know. I ended up turning them into mini abstracts (some of which you have seen. ) Good way to keep the happy parts of the warm-ups. Thank you for the inspiration and creativity.
Hey Emmanuel! I love looking at paintings with a little view finder like that. I bought some 5x7" pre-cut mats for exactly that purpose. So many cool little paintings to be found in larger warm-ups!
I enjoyed your video. No background music or extra chatter made it easy to watch.
Thank you! These are the types of art videos I enjoy watching too.
I love how they look like 3 totally different paintings!
Thanks, Tracy! Its fun when you look at painting in little sections like this.
Beautiful cards/original art, Chris. Could be displayed with one in a small frame (4x6 ?) as a suggestion to buyers. Thank you so much for this tutorial - it's so motivating to see an artist doing these exercises.
Thanks, Ann! Great idea about displaying one in a frame!😊
They're beautiful cards and a fantastic idea!
Thanks, Peggy! They are pretty fun to make.
Thank you so much Chris, I really really enjoyed watching you create firstly the painting but then, cutting them into those stunning pieces to make into cards. They are stunning and beautiful too. I’ve subscribed and given you a thumbs up too. Please stay safe and well too.
Thank you so much, Mags! You stay safe and well also. 😊
Great work! Just a rough idea of how much we should charge for collage cards of this size? Thanks.
Thanks, George! When I have some available I usually do $10-$12. What I see is usually $10-$25+ for homemade artist cards. If you have time, I would do a little research to see what artists are selling them for now on Etsy.
I can never guess how it´s going to turn out but you always end up with nice pieces, nice compositions. Do these practices become ideas for bigger paintings?, The cards are beautiful and people can frame them too. Nice idea.
Thanks, Priscilla! Most of the time I don't know how they're going to turn out either. Funny you should mention turning warm-ups into larger paintings. I just gessoed a canvas to do just that. I plan on making a video of that process. I've had several warm-ups that have inspired larger pieces.
@@chrisloudart Thank you for taking the time to answer. I like abstract art but I havent tried much. I like abstract collage and I do mixed media and just as you, I never know whats going to come up, it is exciting. Thank you for sharing, i´ll be watching your next video. Greetings from Mexico.
Buena's tardes! I think that is one of the exciting aspects of abstract painting that I love - finding out where the painting takes me.
@@chrisloudart 😊
I enjoyed this so much. The thought never occurred to me to use abstract warm ups for these. I've been gel printing cards like crazy, with the 3x5 gel plate, mainly daffodils, and now feathers (got a bag at the craft store), so much fun. I truly enjoyed this card making vid, thanks! p.s. you have amazing content!
Thanks so much Kathy! I just bought a gelli plate, but have only had a chance to play with it for a couple of hours. It seems like something I could get addicted to using.😊
@@chrisloudart It is addicting. Thankfully, the daffodils have stopped blooming. They were gallant volunteers for printing, each flower lasts for about 10-18 pulls (I put them back in the water at the end of each printing session) they make great prints, and the paint pull off sheets are great collage fodder. I also love painting directly on the plate w/brush, and pulling cards w unique abstracts. So much fun.
@@KathyBrooksArt That sounds wonderful! I'm excited to play with it more. 😊
Chris...Thank you for sharing...
Thank you!
I juse the leftover and make to and from cards to christmaspacket😊
Wonderful idea Ingunn!😊
How much do you sell these for? They’re beautiful!
Thank you so much, Barbi! When I have some available I usually do $10-$12. What I see is usually $10-$25+ for homemade artist cards. I just bought a print postcard at a gallery for $20. Hope that helps! 😊
Wow. I bet mine would look like a hot mess
I bet you'd be surprised how good yours would look👍
Love this!!
Thanks, Maria!❤️
Those are neat!
Thanks, Becky!
Look's great...You always have great ideas..
Thanks, Grozda!
Loving this! Just wondering if you sign your art?
Thank you so much! I do sign my art. How about you?
@@chrisloudart I watched the video until the end where you say you sign your art 😊 I’m just a beginner and I really appreciate your videos. I’m located in British-Columbia where we are going through a very rough time at the moment. Fortunately and I’m very grateful our little community is ok for now. So I got my gesso, paints, etc. out so that I can just lose myself in creating whatever.
I'm sorry you're having to go through that. I'm in Colorado and we've had a slate of bad fires over the last 10 years so I get the anxiety they create. I think art is a wonderful way to escape
My sister just asked for me to make a bunch of thank you cards for her - so off I go - thanks for helping me figure out how to make a bunch out of one ☝️
Hey Kelly! These are really fun to make. You're in for a good time!😁
Super!
Thanks, Andrea!
C'est superbe ❤❤❤merci à vous 😊😊😊
Merci beaucoup, Martine!
Love it!
Thanks, Lil Red!
Very nice...
Thank you!
hi chris , what are the alcohol based markers you use? thx!
Hey Carole! These are markers that many illustrators use. Someone gave me a set and I've enjoyed playing with them. They have bright colors and typically show through thin layers of acrylic paint.
