    UPDATE: I was wrong about Blend Recording (03:41) - When FL updated to 20.9, grouping recorded tracks automatically was part of that update. Blend recording does NOT need to be on in order for tracks to be grouped. Everything else is correct though 🙂

      Thanks for noticing my comment! I was watching a video that was talking about Brandy’s “Full Moon” album and how she had so many stacked vocals and the engineers mixed them well so you couldn’t tell and that’s how you make your vocals sound wide! How many stacks do you do for a verse and how do you mix and pan them on FL STUDIOS? Could you do a tutorial?

    • @Nayah9
      @Nayah9 Před 2 lety +3

      Also, "Blend recording" isn't what you use to avoid recording previous tracks.
      That's what "External input only" is for (also a 20.9 feature).

  • @tonygunz21

    If you have a backing track, no need to keep the metronome on. It could actually hurt the performance, since you're timing will be influenced by the metronome, rather than just going with the vibe of the track that you're recording to.

    • @Tanashee
      @Tanashee Před 2 lety +12

      If it ever is an issue of 'hurting your performance' its because the backing track isn't actually on tempo. Let's not push your preference of recording and influence people into how you think recording should be. For instance, going with the vibe' and being off the beat can also hurt the performance too lol. Like in instances where you have layered vocals and you want them to match in cadence; you might want to hear where the beat is like I sometimes like to. Especially on instrumentals where there is a lack of a downbeat, or where listening to it it is ambiguous where the beat is. You might want precision.
      Instead, record your vocals however way you prefer; have it on if you like it on and if you think it helps. Sometimes it doesn't. Your timing being influenced by the actual BPM of your song is fine in many situations. Also you can just move the vocals after to be the precision you prefer, or stretch the backing track to where the metronome being on isn't a hinderance.

    • @tonygunz21
      @tonygunz21 Před 2 lety +10

      @@Tanashee In 20+ years of recording, I've never once been in a session where the metronome is kept on once the instrumental/beat/backing track is laid down and ready for vocals. Typically it's turned off once the instrument that is used as the foundation of the tempo are laid (usually the drums). If the vocalist cannot stay on tempo with the actual beat, well then you have a whole other problem on your hands. Leaving the metronome on will be even more harmful if the beat is not intended to be quantized, or the backing track contains live elements. It's just not optimal, which is why you'll likely never see it left on in a professional session after the track is laid. But hey, if it works for you, do your thing.

    • @Tanashee
      @Tanashee Před 2 lety +3

      The last sentence of your response should of been all that you said. Key words; 'You' never once been in a session. Or 'typically'. You also just watched someone record vocals with the metronome on and I don't think what we just watched was 'harmful. Lol.
      The great thing about music is there is not one right way to do something. Ex: What if the beat *is* intended to be quantized. Or you are an average MIDI using SoundCloud producer, the types who are probably clicking this video, who are using beats that can be synced to a BPM that have no live elements... lol oh look a reason to possibly have a metronome, cause it wont hurt. Some just like hearing the downbeats and such- like me, when I mentioned the layered vocals.
      In your example of live elements in the beat, well the issue there isn't the metronome- but the live elements, because of human error. Following the metronome in that *very specific scenario* could make you too precise. To me, however, you're using that one thing to justify it being 'harmful'. But let's talk about why human error is the root issue.
      I'd argue if the metronome is enough to 'harm' your session... how good are the performers, engineers and producers there? If a precise click messes up your 'vibe' so much so its harmful... well then *you have a whole other problem on your hands* , and it might be staying on tempo lol.
      I spent over 15 years in symphonic bands as a Clarinetist, so I say this with my own live performance background; It's possible for live elements to play precisely on a BPM (although most listeners wouldn't be able to tell if you were off the actual tempo at a concert; you are also looking at very talented players). Especially if the band has a conductor; which, is the metronome. And if those are the 'live elements' you are using to record vocals on, the metronome will not hurt. If the live elements are not on sync to a BPM... make them.
      Which goes into optimality; the reason why its not 'optimal' has little to do with the metronome, and the simple fact some 'Professional' musicians and singers feel where the beat is and go with the 'vibe'. And being precise isn't needed in music. But that's *some* , and if you don't want precision. that's a preference. And in terms of you not seeing it on in a 'professional setting'... you need context. If you are in a session with professional players who most likely have their own internal methods of feeling the beat and are very good at staying on beat... Why would the metronome ever be on? Do professional bike racers always need training wheels to go straight? With context, duh- it would be off. But maybe one time that bike racer is on a very wobbly path and needs help staying straight; maybe they want some stabilizers that one time lol. Getting/needing help is fine, which brings me to the final points.
      Some vocalists/musicians do need the aid of a click; instead of belittling that, just turn it on and help them. Ultimately, I wrote all this because claiming 'preference' as a standard I don't think is right because again, there is no right way in music, and in my opinion there isn't many instances where you are recording vocals with a click on I view as harmful that cannot just be *edited* to be fine. There's just better ways in certain situations for certain people.
      TL;DR - Do what you prefer, and edit in post lol

    • @tonygunz21
      @tonygunz21 Před 2 lety +1

      @@Tanashee I believe I was talking specifically about recording vocals in a DAW over a backing track. Not a live perfomance, nothing to do with a conductor of an orchestra, but go off lol. It’s okay for everyone to have their own way of doing things, but my sentiments remain the same that keeping a DAWs metronome on when recording vocals over a beat is suboptimal. There’s a reason why practically no one uses a metronome when there’s already a backing track, but hey, no need for another dissertation, record with a metronome if you want lol.

    when i double click the track i just recorded. it starts me at 100. so i have to scroll all the way down to the track that’s mixed. do you think you know what’s the problem ?
    also i have to manually press the little record button in the mixer each time i punch in. it should stay on but i have to manually turn it on every time.
    hope you can help with this because i haven’t found any help with it.
