🏓 Ping pong is a standard procedure slipping drill that is a great way to start off or finish off sessions. This drill is most notably used by one of Alex's coaches - Lee Alves.
This brilliant drill develops elite head movement via getting in hundreds and thousands of reps of slipping & punching, installing this deep within our muscle memory making this ability become instinctual. This is important as during competition, your adrenaline will skyrocket causing frontal lobe shutdown - your conscious mind will often go out the window and this is where we rely on our natural instincts (fight or flight). Therefore, we MUST drill drill drill until these patterns, habits, and reactions are fully established into our subconscious minds. You want to perform in complete flow state. This is the importance of drilling in general.
Back to Ping Pong - this drill consists of slipping in either direction against the extended lead arm and striking the same rear pad after each slip. The base combination to start, is slip to the left (outside) throw jab, slip to right (inside) throw cross. Repeat until comfortable then you can begin adding uppercuts and also striking off the same side consecutively. Mix it up. You can also pull instead of slipping whenever you want. An advanced variation, would be to slip throw 1 strike, slip throw 2, slip throw 1, slip throw 2 - and repeat that flow. This is the variation Lee Alves uses in the clip I provided. This drill is best programmed into your sessions as one 2-3min round to start off.
