Hi Score Girl is so much more than just a pandering anime that talks about video games. It's a love story, a education on early gaming, and a nostalgia trip to anyone who grew up in the 80's and 90's. Haruo Yagushi's love for games resembles so much within many gamers of the era, myself included. And the love story that is told between Haruo and Akira may seem far-fetched on the surface, but truly hit me in the feels due to my own story of love and finding someone in this world who enjoys the things that are important to me.

Hi everyone! This episode made me really happy to make, i don't get to really gush over video games at this point so it was a good way to cover two things i love... Well, actually three lol, just had my girlfriend watch this and she cried 😂
Anyway, feelin like i scored some points today, (pun intended) i hope you enjoyed my take. Id love to cover anime-like video games on this channel. For instance Kakarot just came out and i think it would be fun to talk about, i just dont know if you guys would like or want that. Let me know!

@@JosephFlores-yn4yi I hate CG anime in general but that didn't stop me from watching all 24 episodes of Hi Score Girl and finish the manga. The CG isn't even that bad to be honest. They only used CG on moving objects and the framerate isn't complete shit unlike other CG anime cough cough Berserk 2016. The backgrounds are like pastel drawings in a children storybook. What stands out is the cinematography that no reviewer ever seem to talk about. There are some scenes that made me feel like watching a movie like that transition near the end of episode 2 and the beginning of episode 12. The scene where Akira Ono leaves Haruo for the first time. The very last episode is shot very well but I'm not going to spoil that one as not many watched Hi Score Girl II yet. Speaking of which, Hi Score Girl II is going to be a treat in terms of well composed shots of scenes. The story is also really good for what it is. The anime follows the manga plot very closely.

Jimminy Kricket I think you’re projecting. Go see a therapist if you’re depressed. If you work hard, you can beat it. I believe in you.
This guy isn’t depressed, he knows exactly what he wants with his goals and he’s going for it despite everyone giving him shit and looking down on him for it. Because of his passion, he attracts not one, but two love interests. He has his doubts, like everyone normal does, but he pushes through.
Depressed people don’t do anything with their lives. They just stay at home, watch videos, and criticize people for having their own story preferences.

@RipMudafuka69 MLG Actually unlike you I'm able to see passed the gooey sentiments invoked by filmcraft to the actual situations that young boys living through circumstances like this endure and how nobody see's it as a problem even when they grow up to be angry and violent. I'm not fooled by the sickie sweet lies by a show repeatedly displaying how it's "funny" to beat up on isolated, defenseless sons of single mothers. I dare you to watch this show again to count the number of times abuse of a little boy is portrayed as comedy. If it were a female character this show would be banned from the web.

      @jimminykricket4067 Před 4 lety

@RipMudafuka69 MLG The point is that it's toxic. Dismiss it or minimize it all you want but child abuse is what you're watching and normalizing it is wrong. Particularly when it's put across as just normal and fine to bully someone and nothing in the plot calls it out for what it is or shows up the perpetrator as such. They just leave it out there as, "of course this is what we do!"

This anime was beautiful and got me teary eyed a lot of times. I'll admit I'm biased, but that it's because I'm blessed of having been there at the time, I remember how ground breaking SFII was, how awesome it was to see the characters on Art of Fighting filling the screen and zooming out, doing your first fatality, your first shoryuken and many other things. It really hits home.
It's kinda biographical to me, I travelled between cities to challenge new oponents and leaving my mark in arcades where nobody knew who I was, I met a ton of friends that way and, fun fact, recently I was going around a mall with a friend of mine who I befriended 20 years ago when we used to play Strikers 1945, he was an absolute beast and developed a lot of techniques to increase his high score, and we found an old Strikers cabinet, still holding his "AXL" record at first place after all this time.
Again, I'm biased, modern kids won't be able to experience the arcade scene ever in their lives, they won't make friends out of rivals online the same way we did on the arcades, nowadays all you know is their gamertag and little else more. It had an specific audience in mind. Not a fan about how it ended though, I think Hidaka deserved more and luckily there seems to be a manga about her in the works and scheduled to be released next year.
I also met my wife through gaming and she mocks me because our story is somewhat similar to that of Haruo and Ono, we met playing Ragnarok Online, she was an assassin cross and I was a paladin, she did beat me everytime for reasons that might be obvious to someone that knows that game, but still, it was the beggining of a meaningful experience that I wouldn't have experienced ever if it wasn't because of videogames.
It's tied with Carole & Tuesday as my favorite anime of 2019.

I don't have much to add to your story, but it is very heartwarming to know that so many people relate to Hi Score Girl and had similar stories to the characters. I'm really happy for you guys!
I will say though, with a total time shift with generations, I agree that arcade goers are becoming less and less and there's no more communities made on arcades. I think the closest to that would be Com Shops here in the Philippines, where kids would hang around and play on the computer for an hour in exchange for a dollar or so. I want to see communities on arcades again, it's always barren and lonely when I'm on a machine.

I love how Haruo describes his relationship with Ono, really emphasises how they’re best friends who enjoy each other’s company and sharing their hobby together, and just feeling comfortable with each other. They actually just spend time together and find each other’s company comforting, and that just felt like a really wholesome way to develop a romance to me. Maybe I haven’t watched enough romance anime but I feel like it’s not that common to see such a natural feeling relationship like that.

This show really helped me move forward last year when I was at the lowest point of my life. I was so depressed and felt I've lost the ability to perceive the "flavor" of good things. This show evoked feelings I thought I lost when I grew up, and made me remember my fondest childhood memories of carefree and laid back weekends, friendships, innocent crushes, and of course the arcades. It made me feel so good, for a time it was the only show I watched (14 times in a row, just changing it up like switching the dub, subtitles, on a different site, on a different device, etc). It reminded me of how much I like good anime after years of not watching the stuff. It helped me, too, in looking for ways to move ahead in my life. Small steps, like planning trips outside the country with my girlfriend. I'm really glad I gave this show a chance. Thanks for covering it.

This reminded me of my own experiences and a conversation I had with my older brother. I explained to him that I always enjoyed playing videogames with him even when I was too young to be mature about it all the time. I always tried to get better because it was always fun. I didn't mind watching him play because I found other ways to get involved. Telling him to watch his (screen) corners. Helping him with puzzles, which I realized when I was older that I was actually always better than him at so that was one reason he "let me help". 😄I also explained that I enjoyed playing videogames with him throughout the years because he didn't see me as "a girl who plays videogames". He just saw me as someone else that loves the hobby. I told him that even though he literally had to carry me through most of Chip'n'Dale: Rescue Rangers, I loved every minute of it. I loved when he congratulated me for my first Street Fighter 2 win. It was nice to just be able to do something with someone who doesn't treat you like trash, win or lose. I explained that when I got older, I realized that way too many guys wanted "a girl who plays videogames" but not "a girl who plays videogames well". I explained to him some of the stuff I went through and he was shocked. I literally got kicked out and banned from a guy's house because I beat him in Injustice. I explained how I hate Halo because I literally had my own team turn against me after I got a decent amount of intentional kills under my belt. The insult to injury was after I refused to play with them again, they had the nerve to act dumbfounded by such a response. I literally had guys snap controls in half, throw controllers at tvs, and even had a guy rip out a PS2 tray, which the PS2 wasn't even his by the way, because I beat them at a game. Literally the only difference between me and everyone in the room was that I was female. Another guy beats them, perfectly fine. I beat them in the same game, literal tantrum. I had guys try to cheat to get one over on me. The tantrums were even bigger after I beat them when they were cheating. It got to a point where I would play very differently when I was with a group of guys and the only time they would notice was when my brother was there. Heck, he noticed but I don't think he ever knew the depth of why. I would even try to keep the peace by pretending to suck, taking all the verbal abuse that came along with 'sucking', but once these guys found out that I didn't actually suck, giant tantrum because I was always "going easy" on them and then even bigger tantrum when I went "full force" and crushed them. I'm not talking about actual children. Throughout my teenage years, it was bad and I thought when I became an adult, it would be better. Nope. I had these things happen while I was in college and even after. It is uncomfortable and terrifying when you are the sole female in a group of raging males that are actively destroying things. I've had people say it was my own fault for beating them or that I did so many "guy" things. Like if one of them attacked me for winning a stupid game, then it was 100% my fault. I also tried to explain this to my fiance who is a bit younger than me. Growing up in the 90s as a girl that liked "boy" things was tough. Literally the only person I could talk to without judgement about my love for Batman, TMNT, anime, and videogames was my older brother and I considered that damn lucky all things considered. Whenever a guy would try to shut me down about my knowledge on these subjects, my brother would stop them and tell them to listen and have a proper conversation. Without my brother there, I had to fight to get a word in and when the creator later verified whatever I said, it was like I never said anything at all. It's why even now I'm wary about such things. I'm glad there is an anime that touches on the topic. I'm going to have to check it out, even if it reminds me of some moments that still sting.

It's horrible that's been your experience with gamers. Well I know you have no reason to believe it and it may not mean much anyway... but here's a gamer guy who grew up in the 90's who would love a girl that could crush him in games. I don't understand why anyone would be interested in relationships (friendship or otherwise) without a solid foundation of mutual respect, especially where mutual interest is concerned.
And yeah, if you haven't watched it yet, you'd probably enjoy this anime.

That's what I love behind alot of arcade and overall just alot of genres in video games where new and usually indie games get inspiration and at the end of the day are made as love letters to what they drew inspiration from. Today's FGC is notorious for having alot of ill will being called out and put on the spotlight and that is why I enjoy listening to people who expirienced what was prior to that. When something was lackluster and did not deliver as intended it's common today to have a focus on that and let it linger while before you can see it was either ignored or dealt with in a very done to earth and simple way getting over anything that is considered to be unsatisfying, it is all about enjoying and celebrating ridding ones of the unwanted problems and making new challenges and ofcourse friendships in such healthy ways. Keep up the amazing work man.

A big thank you for putting this together, I wouldn't have known about it otherwise.. being a lifelong gamer, and actually able to remember the last days of arcades (showing my age, I regret nothing.. even though I was barely old enough to go into them on my own lol), this show hit some great points for me. Definitely a fun watch. And by the way, I wasn't tearing up a bit at the end of episode 3, you were.

I love this anime. I was born in the 80's and I lived through this actual time. Kinda sad there weren't a lot more Sega games (Sega fan here) but the games shown bring back so many memories. Getting my sorry butt handed to me by much better fighting game players made me want to get better. Games really can teach us life lessons. Too bad some people don't see it as such. Hopefully anime such as this can help change that view.

(Sidenote I love the detail of Ono and Hidaka playing Virtua Cop together, where Ono is playing with just one hand on her gun but Hidaka uses both hands. Just a minor detail I thought was really cool."

I've been meaning to watch this video since Friday. But scarily enough, I met my best friend in a similar way (even via pokemon too lol) I was her supervisor and she'd been working for a week despite never being properly trained (I got moved there kind of last minute). I was wearing my Charizard winter cap and she'd commented on it in a way that immediately alerted me that she knew more than just gen one surface level stuff. She was a seasonal employee and I assumed that i'd never see her again and decided to do something nice for someone random that Christmas and decided on her. I got her a PSN card and a bottle of Fireball. She'd eventually come back in May and that was almost three years ago now. Its like we've know each other our whole lives. She murders me in smash bros (and i'm not even that horrible) but she can't touch me in Mario Kart. Thanks for sharing your story. It hit me right in the feels honestly. Keep up the good work!

You got a sub dude! Just for covering High Score Girl! HELL YEAH! I like you feel this anime was made just for me! I was RAISED by the arcade. And for any 90's quarter pumping maniac this anime will do it for you. I guarantee it. Every episode is a smile on my face. Nostalgia bombs episode. If you have fond memories of squaring up your quarters in the machine, waiting through the line for to be the next champion, and seeing how many you could vanquish before bowing yourself to a superior Foe, then this anime will recapture your youth perfectly (minus the love triangle I'm certain none of us was involved in. Honestly even the romance main plot (ends up being a sub plot for me) will grow on you over time. I guess I love it so much because, I WAS this kid, the main character. I had a Turbo Graphix instead of a Super NES or Sega Genesis, a Sega Saturn instead of a playstation, and cared about the arcade more than both. A love letter to the arcades and players of the 90's, no better way to describe it.

My friends and I would sit down and play fighting games for hours and air hockey and whatever else was available but it was never like this. This show spoke to the child in me and helped me answer some long standing questions about people of my past that I haven't been able to reach out too since we drifted apart. I wanted to cry on episode 18, it was so sad I feel so bad for poor hidaka. I feel like she disturbed better, Ono just was a bratty character. The reason why Hi Score Girl reached me on a personal level because that's how I met my first crush. It's not through fighting games but through rhythm games instead. I grew up in a strict household like Ono: academic is first, nothing else matter. So, the only time I have for myself is late at night when everyone are asleep and I would play Deemo on my crappy ass third handed Galaxy S4 which was used by my aunt, then by another cousin then pass down to me. One day, during class I saw another girl playing Deemo as well, so I opened up a conversation with her. We would duel each other on iconic Deemo songs like Sunset, Sakura iro no Yume, Pure White and sometimes Myosotis if we're feeling adventurous and she would often win, getting 95%+ on all songs while I struggle to even reach an 85. One day, my parents found out about the games and needless to say, they were quite pissed. I was forced to delete the game, along with all of my progress. Devastated me came to class and told her that we can't play anymore. She replied with something on the line of "It's ok, we can both play on my phone". The beauty of Hi Score Girl is that it represent who gamers really are: we're just a bunch off people who got overly obsessed over some pixel on a screen. People who are willing to spend hours upon hours mastering our craft not because we want to be the best but simply because we love to play. Now, I would often shed a tears or two when listening to Altale by Sakuzyo (it's the most beautiful game soundtrack every made in my opinion) and is a time where my entire world was much simpler.
