  • In this HVAC Training Video, I show the Different Methods used to Test For Leaks at the HVACR System Ports. The Schrader Valve Cores must be Checked to Find if they are Leaking. A Valve Core Removal Tool can be used to Replace a Valve Core while the System has Refrigerant without Recovering the Refrigerant. Supervision is needed by a licensed HVACR Tech while performing tasks as Experience and Apprenticeship garners Wisdom and Safety.

      Thanks Craig for the info. I was drying with paper some condensate water from an uncapped vapor line port a few days ago. Your leak tester cap is a great idea. I will try it. Good to see you in the video again and not just hear your voice. After much listening to someone on video or radio I begin to wonder what they look like. 👍

    Simple yet brilliant. I could probably use the same "drill a hole" technique for shut off valve caps. They are not as universal, but 2-3 different caps would work for over 90%.

    Nice idea. I also want to commend you on using a kneeling pad and nitrile gloves. You set a good example but I don't know if an unseasoned tech would take notice. Those are the practices that really pay off in your later years. My knees are starting to ache now that I am 50.

    • @acservicetechchannel
      @acservicetechchannel  Před 4 lety +1

      Absolutely, sometimes I would say to the students, work harder not smarter to see who was listening. Then I would follow it up with a lift with your back not with your legs to see who was paying attention. Then once I had everyones attention I would explain how ridiculous it is to do it a wrong way, ha ha. Thats when they retain the info!!!

    The core have a rubber seat, and it will eventually start leaking, it’s not a question of if, but only when. And the more you tighten it, the sooner it will start leaking. The service valve has been design to be leak proof with the caps on. For that reason, it is far more important to cary new caps, or at least new O rings to replace the gasket in the old cap. And the O ring will seat better, if you give it a little nylog. Same for the core. Bottom line: Test with the cap on!

    • @acservicetechchannel
      @acservicetechchannel  Před 4 lety

      Yeah it is certainly nice to replace the plastic caps with brass ones, and we need to replace them with locking caps if they are exposed anyway, thanks!

    • @Zachariahfml
      @Zachariahfml Před 4 lety

      That's what the caps are for. Which makes this tip useless honestly. If the cap doesn't have a good o-ring use nylog and forget about it. And if you're just leaving those off then leak detector bubbles are the least of your worries 🤣

    Excellent 👍. BTW, if I'm a retired Engineer, is there a fast track method to getting an HVAC license in NJ? Seems like the 1 year apprenticeship is a big hurdle lobbied by existing contractor's. I want to be compliant. I've also gone through FIVE licensed contractors trying to get a mini-split working properly. It wasn't unit I worked on it myself and found horrible workmanship on all flare fittings. Thanks in advance!

    • @acservicetechchannel
      @acservicetechchannel  Před 4 lety

      David, yeah I don't think there is a work around for that. Most of the apprenticeship courses are at night and they would put you in a year 4 class but I understand where you are coming from, thanks!

  • @Zachariahfml
    @Zachariahfml Před 4 lety +1

    All of this can be avoided by using nylog and a cap. Almost every Schrader core leaks

    • @cyclemen
      @cyclemen Před 4 lety

      Nylog/nylock shouldn't need to be used, the Shrader valve caps have a rubber seal to 500pis+ when tightened correctly. The brass service valve caps that are tightened with a spanner are rated to 1000psi. Correct me if I'm wrong but the leak shown in the video would only leak with the cap off.

    • @acservicetechchannel
      @acservicetechchannel  Před 4 lety +1

      If the valve core leak is bad and if the cap holds, they are awful tight to try to get off as well do to the buildup of pressure, thanks!

    • @Zachariahfml
      @Zachariahfml Před 4 lety

      Yea those rubber seals stay in for the first few times you use them then they fall out. I'm not going to replace every cap I take off so I just use nylog to be more efficient. I can't tell you how many service valve or king valve caps that leak due to bad packing and the seal is long gone. Almost no supplier stocks the OEM service valve caps or the corresponding gaskets for the caps. Nylog is compatible with every type of refrigerant and oil and it's gotten me out of a bind more than once.
