Please react to this sir.
Sorry I don't have much to tip you now.

You're the first one to react to this guy. TIA! 🙏
Have enjoyed your reactions and look forward to following your journey, and channel! The sound engineering on Moving Pictures was simply outstanding!
Good Luck, in future attempts in deciphering that which once was & will always be.There are drummer's.Then, there is Neil Peart.💙
Love your Podcast Andrew!! I'm a huge fan of RUSH,And of course Neil Peart!! Neil Peart is the Drummer that influenced me!! Living in the Buckeye State of Ohio,in America!! Thank you again Andrew!!!!
People say Peart couldn't swing. And they're right. His phrasing was stiff, solid, calculated, conducted, and metronomic without a hint of swing. It was almost like it was mechanically quantized. And balls-on the money. Thats exactly what made his style so perfect for RUSH.
I feel so fortunate to have shared time on this earth with Neil Peart and Rush.
Peart was and always will be the highest level drummer and the most technically proficient and gifted musician. He was the GOAT!
This song really showcases how Neil played cymbal patterns better than anyone else, the focus people have on drums without the cymbals never fails to amaze me.
Love those comments about the 'art'. No need for me to expand. Just spot on.
Oh MY, that Highhat WORK!!! And that LOOK, on your face, Priceless!
Yes Indeed :)
I was lucky enough to see rush twice, once with great seats! I'm a guitar player and went to see Alex but was transfixed on neil the whole show. He was a true master!!
i feel very fortunate to have seen them live as many times as i did, it was always interesting how close they came to the sound of the albums. seeing Neil and how hard he hit for the whole show was really something to witness, his focus and intensity was second to none.
Well said Brian!

Dinner was the Rush reaction needs to be done! This will really show you how down to earth these guys are! Great week of reactions!! recommended you have a few drinks and watch. Love to see your reaction!!
The nailed "Red Barchetta" in one take in the studio. The following is from Neil's notes in the Moving Pictures tour book: "With only a few runs to get the sounds together, it was to be that rarest of all animals (for ourselves, anyway!), a one-take wonder". Amazing.
The greatest drummer to ever live PERIOD!!!!!!!
maybe because I'm a petrol head but this will always be one of my favorite Rush tunes. The section starting at 4:15 is probably one of my favorite in their whole discog, it's perfect. Neil's hihat playing, Alex's soaring chord stabs over the open pedal tone and Geddy's vocals delivering Neil's lyrics with justice.
There is a 1981 movie starring Lee Majors and Burgess Meredeth called The Last Chase, which was inspired by the same story. The movie left a lot to be desired, but the final showdown scene is straight out of "Red Barchetta." Worth watching for all of us petrol (gear) heads!! 😉
Another Neil Peart master class in drumming.
Yes David!
I like waking up to these videos!
Been enjoying RUSH week; I was bummed out when Neil passed away. Thanks, Andrew 🥁 🤘🏼
Good morning from New England...This could be a stand alone track on purely drumming album.....It showcases so many different techniques and vocabulary it could be a master class in and of itself..Thx for the vid Andrew. Peace.
Master class, absolutely!
As someone who doesn't play music but just enjoys it, I find your videos very interesting since I know next to nothing about how to make music. I love Rush and I will always be here for any Rush you choose to do. Thanks for the interesting take on the skill side of the music.
Thank you Andy, his creativity is unmatched, it's all the little nuances and attention to detail that separated him from the rest, your favorite drummer's favorite drummer!
Neil did a few instructional videos with Hudson Music and the last one (around 2010-11 Time Machine tour) has him talking in detail about each of his drum parts on this 1981 Moving Pictures album. Segments of the DVD are available on CZcams and I bet you would really enjoy hearing him talk about his process. His intellect was just... Whew! Off the charts. Probably one of the most interesting people I've ever come across, and drumming isn't even at the top of the list of reasons.
Your final comment about him coming into a studio and you "just let him play" doesn't describe his process at all -- he carefully crafted each part in advance, practiced practiced practiced, and reproduced those parts as faithfully as possible for 40 years each time they performed a song live. He often said he was not an improvisational player, until the very end of his career, when he allowed himself some freedom within his carefully crafted solos and parts.
Anyway, thanks for doing this series. So much fun!
He wasn't referring to Neil just playing whatever he wanted, he was referring to how Neil's sculpted choice of what he plays and how is organic and unedited overall. He's not saying Neil was improvising, he's saying that Neil's choice of crafted sections that he brought into the studio when he recorded the track was its own piece of art that wasn't mucked with in the editing process later--you took Neil's entire section of crafted drumming and mostly just let it be.
Rush week is 2 songs? And ends on a Thursday? Oh ya, that's right. You did do a reaction to a cover of every rush song. That was actually very cool. But If I was in Canada, I'd be looking for my "I'm a little upset " sign!
I've got an extra sign for you. 2 songs as a 'week' is pretty ridiculous.
Seeing the sheet music is outstanding. I played different instruments from the time I was in 4th grade all the way thru college. Instruments ranging from snare, bass drum, to trumpet, trombone, valve trombone, sax - both tenor & alto. Really enjoyed playing all the instruments. Had a blast on the long trips also.
Thanks for doing these! there are so many incredible Rush songs. Listening to you break them down is quite enjoyable. I look forward to another Rush week.
I really appreciate the support Tim!
Keep going with this different stuff that I've never seen. Can you imagine writing this.
One of my all time Rush songs
Seems to be a fave of many people Erick!
Your smile pretty much says it all. :)

Hey, Andrew.. I just wanted to thank u for reviewing this isolated drum track. From one of the Most Legendary drummers in the in music history.. I have Never heard it before... Thanks Andrew!
I’ve been listening to Rush pretty much all of my life. The second album I ever purchased was 2112 with my lawn mowing money. I’ve worn out several set of vinyl and cassettes listening to them. For what ever reason, I concentrated on Neil and Getty’s work, how intricately they wove together to create the rhythm that is Rush. A lot of my friends concentrated on Alex’s work.
We went to see them for the R40 concert. First, absolutely my favorite concert I’ve attended. Amazing musicianship and performance. The interesting thing that happened was my guitar friends couldn’t stop talking about Getty and how they’ve underrated him all these years. I was the one saying the same about Alex. We’ve all listened to Rush literally a thousand times and are still learning nuances about songs you’d think we’d have memorized by now.
Thank you Andrew , it's been great hearing your reaction .
Humans playing music !
It's a win !
Peace and love brother 👍🏻☮❤
That track made me happy.
Neil back then used his trusted Slingerland Snare all the way up til early 90's.
Thanks for Rush Week!
Thank you for watching and the support Christopher!
You should do Rush Week twice a year to gain others to the Fraternity/ Sorority of Rush!
I see what you did there, LOL.
Thanks. One might say each performance paints a moving picture. Yeah, I did that. tavi.
You went there Richard!
I bet I have listened to that song a hundred times and I never noticed the variation in snare tone. After watching this vid I would bet Neil was using 2 different snares in the recording. As a huge Rush fan...Thank you for doing these isolated drum track vids. Love them!!!!
He did use two. A standard snare and a picalo.
@@gcapps100 For the recording of Red Barchetta?
Not sure. I never researched his set up during that time.
@@gcapps100 that's what I was posting about
Gotcha.
I never knew that a drum score looks just like a piano score, I could play this on my Grandma's piano.
👌
Now THIS is a driving song!!
And prophetically maybe our future. One could only hope not. But if so, my Red Barchetta is White.
See you on the road Alloy Air Cars.
Thank you Rooney. To be honest, I don't think this is really Neil, I am hesitant about it. Anyway. You noticed Neil's drum tuning was quite singular, higher than most rock drummers. And there's an another interesting thing about the recording of this album. The sound engineer (Terry Brown I guess) told it was a headache for him, because Neil, as creative he was, wanted to try micing up the drums uniquely for each song. If you listen to every isolated drum song from this album you will notice the sound is a bit different every time. The kind of things only a band like Rush would do.
Looking forward to Rush month!!
So I'm reading comments as you are. Eric and Geddy let Rutsey go, not for health problems, and not because he didn't share their vision. They actually were satisfied with him as a drummer, but he liked to party too hearty. In that way, it's true, he didn't share their vision. They were determined to be the best in the world. Rutsey didn't show up for rehearsals. He just wasn't as serious-minded about it as they were. Another factoid: from the start, they decided to divide all profits evenly between the three of them. No fighting over who did what and deserved more.
That clean divide of money is how bands survive. Totally transparent!
Thanks for the info Christine
Hi, I was fortunate to see 20 shows and he never missed a stick throw. FYI! Hemispheres side 1 for real don't miss out on this. The stone on the keyboard is the cover of Test For Echo. Enjoy!
Thanks for your work this week. You gained a subscriber. Looking forward to RUSH week 2!
This was quite a journey. You compressed my 35 year journey into a week! Well done.
AHHHHHH the FIRST Rush song I was ever able to play!!! 😍👍
Love the shirt!
THANKS!
My fave show as a kid
Rush Week was awesome!! Thanks Andrew!
Im sure you have already been told or have heard but Neil was nicknamed "The Professor" decades ago. There is a reason. Lol
A China Boy required for so much classic Rush. It's used so well.
Andrew, If you want to begin getting insights into the personalities, these 40 seconds are a good start.
The song in the background is 'Working Man', from the first album, 'Rush'. The "a nice cold beer" line (or "an ice cold beer"... could never decide as there were no lyrics with the first album!) is taken from that song. czcams.com/video/9GYB0GoKYOw/video.html
Hello from Canada
I'm grieving the end of Rudh week! Thanks for the work this week!
Neil peart's organic studio work on vertical horizon's instamatic is insane...love n miss that man!
I think nuance is the word your looking for.
Yeah, that one roto sounding highest Tom. I never shut up about it threw out my teenage years
Neil never played roto toms....he had 6" 8" 10" 12" concert toms....toms with only a top head
@@davebasch5995 roto Tom sounding
Check out Astrotama channel. He stopped uploading years ago but many Peart covers to choose from.
Agree wholeheartedly with your closing new music recording is sterilized by computers and compression crap
Yes Joe!
You can get these and more on the DVD set Neil Peart Taking Center Stage. I highly recommend getting that as it could fuel a lot of your commentary!
I'll get there Evon!
You should do Camera Eye.
Next time you react to rush you should check out Working Man live in a Cleveland!
Thanks Sean!!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums no worries man! Loving your videos! I look forward to each time I see a new one
If you haven't checked out Neil Peart and him tracking "Instamatic" for the band Vertical Horizon, it's "must see". You get to witness some of Neil's humor...as well as a healthy dose of him drumming. And you can see/hear some of Neil's "cliches"...that is, some of the bits and parts that color a lot of Rush's music. It's pretty amazing.
czcams.com/video/1nywYiKeX6g/video.html
Hey Rooney
Rush month!! Theres more than enough material my man. Ive subscribed N joined so now you do that for us!! ... Pleeaase
That's be awesome!
There is a 1981 movie starring Lee Majors and Burgess Meredeth called *The Last Chase* , which was inspired by this same story. The movie left a lot to be desired, but the final showdown scene is straight out of "Red Barchetta." …..and can you guess what the soundtrack was??? YEP, THIS VERY SONG!!! Early 80s tech and effects, but an interesting story of a future where gasoline was outlawed and enforced by a tyrannical gov’t….but ONE GUY had a F1-looking car and a stash of fuel buried under his garage floor….he gets it out AND RAISES ALL KINDS OF HELL 🏎💨💨 running from the (really slow) electric vehicles (they imagined the future would have in 1981) only to be chased by a jet!!
OMG, I SAW that movie... Had no idea this song was there. Gonna have to go find it now
agree with Darla listen to NP on his video may learn something
Please do Chris Kontos of Machine Head performing "Rage to Overcome " 2020 live drum cam.
Hey Andrew,
Matt Gartska just posted a new play through of the new Animals as Leaders single “Gordian Naught” and you absolutely have to check this out. Its INCREDIBLE!!!
Neil Is a great drummer, he will be missed… I’m just curious what your take on Terry Bozzio would be? Polytown had a couple of cool tracks…
For the life of me I cannot figure out how he plays the fill beginning at 4:08. Anyone know a video breakdown of it?
Sounds like has a little phaser-like effect on his snare at a certain point.
Right on. Love it
There is some speculation that this particular drum performance was played by Gregg Bissonette and was tracked for one of those "pretend you're a musician" video games. Just putting that out there in case it's actually true.
Thanks Andrew loved Rush week was thinking you should revisit Josh Freese now on his channel the video of him doing 1,000,000 and Letting You with nin back to back is a testament to his accuracy and raw stamina plz give it a look
I will revisit him Andy!
Thanks Andrew keep up the good work!!!
Wow rush week was 2 songs.... I enjoy your videos just wish it was more obscure tracks or some instructional video stuff that is purely for drummers and has great insight.
Thanks once again for these reviews - makes us all hurt just a little less from the loss. If interested in a really innovative deeper cut and can give only a minute or so - check the first minute or so of Middletown Dreams, from their Power Windows CD. Peart worked his KAT keyboard, electronic kit & open space to very syncopated heights - czcams.com/video/7t4SaJxu7SQ/video.html
Love 80s Rush! Middletown is amazing
I'm almost 100% sure this recording is not Neil playing.
Really?
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Upon further listening, the isolated track does seem to be Neil. However something seems off in the production of the isolated track. A lot of the dynamic nuance between pieces of the kit seems to be lost, which is why I think a lot of folks are saying it sounds odd.
@@FreeBeat its very very hot, extremely compressed. Sounds awful
havent seen Nathan Camarena beign suggestest, so i'll just gonna leave this here (:
I must say ,this was a bit odd..Yes, a lot of sibilance (or similar) on the cymbals , and , as someone who has listened to the studio (Moving Pictures) version of Red Barchetta , an uncountable number of times, the snare didn't sound right.Terry Brown ,producer, wouldn't have released it sounding like this. Maybe it was played about with, so as to get the isolated drum track.I have no idea, but if someone told me this wasn't Neil Peart playing but an extremely accomplished 'other' drummer, I wouldn't be surprised. I'd welcome opinions from other commentees on this. Thanks again Andrew for an excellent week of Neil Peart and Rush, I know you'll be exploring further in due course :)
Ken, Agreed 100%. I was feeling the same thing. I guess we fans feel it. And Neil was such a perfectionist in his craft that I have my doubts.
Yea where is this strange sounding "isolated" drum coming from?
YYZ isolated drum track, please.
The drums make this song, literally. It gives a sense of building intensity, and a heart rush… is the car going to outrun the police? The crescendo with the drum part and the urgency. I cannot really listen to drum parts isolated as an autistic with noise sensitivity. No this is not noise, it is literal genius, so do not misquote me. I grew up in a a drum and bugle corps in North America, and it is a pity that they have become like pitiful marching bands lately. It would have been an awesome drum solo in the 80s or early 90s. You would need the full compliment of a drum unit to catch it, and then I doubt it would have done Neil Peart justice.
REACT ON MATT MCGUIRE. HE HAS A NEW COVER OUT. AND ALSO HIS HIGH DRUM COVER
I would encourage you to listen and react to a song called The Manhattan Project. It’s one of the most amazingly written songs ever.
Thanks Steve!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I think you’d appreciate the composition of it. That song, and one called Marathon, are my two favorites from them.
You should hear the studios versions of all rush songs. Geddy Lee's voice is just dreadful live, but it's perfect in the albums.
Main Monkey Business if you want a real challenge...
Thanks Louis
I agree, drums that sound like drums,is it just me or could most modern metal bands could get sack the drummer and just use a drum machine
They did.
react to jay wainberg AOV 😁
Hey from up the road in the Bay of Islands, Andy.
Thanks for introducing me to Rush. It gave me a break from Metallica. Here is someone you may want to take a look at: Sina, a young lady drummer from Germany with a small following of 1.34M subscribers to her CZcams channel sina-drums. If you were to take a look here are two worthwhile covers she has done are: Smoke on the Water (32M views) czcams.com/video/d33x1HyJZ10/video.html and In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida collaboration (3.9M views) czcams.com/video/xyF5A7BFnqw/video.html .Take care down there.
He did have different snares and two kits around him...just saying. 😎
Hello Andrew !
I know I'm not a Patreon and I'm really sorry about that, but if you read this message and if you want to react to one of the best solos (in my opinion) I've seen, check this : czcams.com/video/j6NoINimNrw/video.html
Todd Sucherman on Drumeo's channel. Very melodious solo, built like a classical song with recurring patterns (like verses or refrains), a real pleasure to watch and listen to.
Thank you for your channel, great videos made by a great man. Keep rockin' !
Thank you Gauthier!
I could do that with one hand tied behind my back and both feet taped together!...... Peace!
Thanks for Rush week, Andrew. Just saw this - Drumcam of The Professor during a soundcheck - including segments from several songs. Quite interesting: czcams.com/video/JZ7aQOaCCA0/video.html
Are you being sarcastic about the recording? I'm 95% sure this is just that the transcription program playing pre recorded sounds to the notes....
The completely unnatural decay is what leads me to believe this is the case. Sounds choke off when another sound on the same note comes along.
Yes, it sounds a little bit odd to me
Wish you had more to say. or anything to say.
I talk heaps on most other vids Thomas :)
Fun reaction, as always, Andrew! Btw, as @enriquemora9272 and @Paradig11111 raised the topic of mic’ing on Neil’s drums, I think we’re listening to a room mic track here… it all sounds like Neil, but I’m not hearing the crisp, close-mic’ed snare and tom sounds from the album. 😊
I'd like to recommend a new band for you to check out. They are called Crown Lands. They're an up and coming Canadian band with an old school rock vibe.
czcams.com/video/WOsOXLixWoY/video.html
This is their homage to Rush (both are big fans).
Hi Andrew, if you want some interesting technical drumming that's still got a funky feel to it, I'd like to propose this: czcams.com/video/iCVSdvG-_Yg/video.html
A great 1980s British band who should have been huge but got screwed by a record label that ran off with their money. Their drummer Phil Minal has been making drum videos on CZcams for years now (he runs an indoor climbing centre as his day job and has his studio in the basement there), but nobody watches them. He and I would really appreciate it if you gave him a bit of exposure...
