    I always figured Kuvira had everything ready to go for the giant mech, she just needed the platinum. that's why she went after Zaofu first, then Republic city. If the fire nation can take what is essentially a balloon with fire place in the basket of it, to the flying war machines they had in the finale, and that was in just a few months. then I don't see the problem with another very militaristic society taking technology this world has had for years, and advancing it. We don't actually have any idea how much time has passed since she took Zaofu

      Avatar: The Last Airbender technologically feels like it was set in the 1880's, because that was when we first invented airships and destroyers. Although ironclad and steam-powered ships were around for 30 years by then. The Fire Nation could easily be compared to Napoleonic France at one end of the 1800's, and Nazi Germany past the other end.
      And comparative to our timeline, The Legend of Korra has a very 20's feel to it. Of course technology advances. I love that it does. But it rubs me the wrong way that technology advances so quickly. At least with the Fire Nation tanks, despite how it looks, its function is more synonymous with the tank that Leonardo Da Vince designed way back in the 1500's. Sure, they looked like WW1 tanks, because of the treads. But aside from that, Fire Nation tanks were mostly just armoured engines that could swivel. No guns or loading mechanisms, because they had firebenders.
      I mean, fighter planes are a new thing in Season 1 of the Legend of Korra. And that was just the right level of technological innovation since Aang defeated Ozai, because the progression still felt natural. And although I don't like the mech suits - especially the ones with legs - I didn't mind the ones that the Equalists had so much, because they were still quite tank-like. But I don't like Kuvira's mechs at all, because they're just too suit-like. We hardly even see planes after the first season. I would have totally preferred that they were featured more prominently.
      And although Kuvira's super-weapon being on a rail would have been fitting to a 20's setting, compared to a spirit-laser-mecha-zilla; it could have been put on a great big blimp like Ozai had in the original series, armoured with platinum, piloted with metalbending, and upgraded with newer technology like engines powered by electricity, and given air-cover by planes and other airships.
      The technology in this series has advanced way too quickly to feel natural. I mean, just look at our world: 140 years since of technological innovation since we've invented the airship, without even having to rely on the power to control the elements, and even today mech suits, walkers, and robotic technology in military applications are still a long way off.

      @@mitchellhayward6492 a lot of the issues we have today are with power, the spirit vines fixed that problem for them. A lot of the other stuff I just chalked up to what I call the Tony Stark effect. Someone creates something that advances technology farther than anything in the last 50 years, and suddenly the world takes a whole jump forward

    • @CrownofMischief
      @CrownofMischief Před 2 lety +1

      @@mitchellhayward6492 really, my biggest gripe about the giant mech(and honestly, the concept of giant mechs in general for any media) is that it's just extremely inefficient. Like, we could probably make something like that if we wanted to with current technology, and I have no issue believing they could(whether the timeline of construction lines up is another story, a thing like that would take years even with metal benders). But the amount of energy it would consume and the amount of material needed would make the endeavor completely illogical. Not to mention a giant bipedal robot with normal human proportions is ridiculously unstable. Imagine having to move a skyscraper while keeping it level. The logical thing to do would be to put it on wheels, or maybe multiple legs, so that there's still multiple things keeping it stable as it moves forward. Instead, you have this, where you need to consider how to make sure the thing doesn't fall backwards from the recoil of its giant laser. Not to mention since it is walking, the cockpit is basically bouncing up and down with each step. Having worked in the bridge of a ship in the middle of rough seas, I can say with certainty that it would suck. That's not even going into the logistics of being an engineer working in one of the legs, and constantly going between 25 degrees to either side every few seconds.
      TLDR the only reason to ever build a giant mech would be for the intimidation factor. Yeah, that's right, I have so many resources and so much disposable time and manpower that I decided to make a giant robot. Could I have more weapons than that? Maybe, who knows?

    • @bbillyk
      @bbillyk Před 2 lety

      @@CrownofMischief Thing is, there are in-universe reasons why the mech works when it absolutely wouldn't in real life. The vines generate essentially unlimited energy so that issue is removed, Kuvira is bending the mech so the stability and control issues are removed, the material was already present and refined at Zaofu so that issue was removed, Kuvira's platform is a self-stabilizing so the bouncing issue is removed, and as far as I know lasers are just fancy light and don't really generate recoil, especially not enough to knock over a giant mech. As far as I can tell having watched the whole franchise about ten times, there is literally no significant reason that the mech is a bad idea in this specific situation. In a city environment where tanks have to navigate around even small buildings and obstacles and there are infinite places to hide covered anti-aircraft emplacements, a humanoid body is a great advantage if it can be made functional, and Kuvira had every way to make it so.
      EDIT: I will say that while the mech makes sense, Kuvira's tactics in using it were absolutely shit. She essentially had the PERFECT sniping platform. If she positioned the mech on a hill overlooking the city, and had the mech absolutely surrounded by anti-aircraft, infantry, and artillery to dispatch any approaching threats, she could have absolutely leveled the city if they didn't surrender first and nobody could have gotten near her. Even an underground stealth approach wouldn't work because all Metalbenders have seismic sense.
      Instead she just walks it into the city where there are tons of buildings to use as cover to get close and infiltrate the mech.

    • @CrownofMischief
      @CrownofMischief Před 2 lety +1

      @@bbillyk while I'll admit the power and recoil are solved, the rest really isn't. I haven't seen anything thing to suggest there was any kind of "self stabilizing platform", but even if there was, at best it would just keep the thing level, the platform would still be moving up and down. And the mech(at least it's outer shell) is made of platinum, so they had to physically take down Zaofu's platinum walls and melt them down the old fashioned way, which would take way longer than it did in the show. Also Kuvira isn't bending the mech itself, she's bending levers that control the movements, so stability is definitely still an issue.

This giant mech was never teased at any point (even though there have been mechs since book 1, there hasn't been anything concrete to hint at this giant gundam of destruction). Plus, let's say that the platinum shell is made from the shells of Zaofu, that gives us 5 episodes to see it, not to mention 5 episodes probably isn't several months (and even if it was, that's a huge gap of time for such few episodes).

    All I'm gonna say is this. If the Fire Nation can make multiple giant metal airships in the span of a few months then The Earth Kingdom can make one giant robot. Should I even get into the Gigantic Drill the Fire Nation had?

    • @prismanime496
      @prismanime496 Před 6 lety +7

      RynKen I mean, we’re meant to assume that the drill had been in the works since Iroh failed to siege Ba Sing Se, a good few decades.
      And the airships weren’t really all that complicated. Just a more advanced model of the airships.
      This is upscaling an already brand new mech suit to a far larger, gundam ass suit with far more fluidity and function in its design in the span of about a month or two. That’s a pretty big stretch, not entirely unbelievable but it’s pushing it.

    • @RynKen
      @RynKen Před 6 lety +16

      PrismAnime Those giant airships are much more complicated then the rather simple hot air balloons they originated from and managed to be completely covered in what looks like thick iron on all sides and still fly just fine. The giant mech is nowhere near as maneuverable as the smaller ones and has very few gadgets by comparison. It's like they stripped out the more complicated parts like shock wires and extendable grips so it could focus on maintaining its size and, as a result, its more believable to me.
      Kuvira potentially had the idea to make a giant version of the platinum mechs right from when she started assimilating the entire Earth Kingdom and it's resources. She even had the two genius inventors, Varrick and Julie on hand the whole time for over three years.

    • @prismanime496
      @prismanime496 Před 6 lety +3

      Obviously they're more complicated, however, they aren't so much so that it's unbelievable that in around 6 months they could improve upon the mechanic's design with the zeppelins.
      Looking at the interior and such, it's basically the same as their larger warships. As such, adding that interior and thicker metal coating to the exterior is just a matter of balancing the physics. An airballoon isn't that complicated whatsoever. All they really did was add a larger cabin with thicker material.
      Making a gundam suit that shoots lasers however, is completely different. The original deisgns were clunky and had to use wheels to move. The arms could only go up and down, different from this suit. Clearly it isn't very fluid in its walking, but figuring out how to upscale a brand-new design, work on maintaining the powersource for such a giant mech and add to its fluidity in just a month or so would be nigh on impossible.
      Yes she had the resources to do so, but the timeframe doesn't add up. Genius inventors doesn't mean that the actual business of testing and developing work much quicker, it makes the actual product better or the design process quicker.
      It's just not very logical.

    • @RynKen
      @RynKen Před 6 lety +7

      Are just gonna pretend like part of my previous comment doesn't exist?
      *"Kuvira potentially had the idea to make a giant version of the platinum mechs right from when she started assimilating the entire Earth Kingdom and it's resources."*
      That gives her over three years to work with. If she already had the plans laid out, all she would need is enough platinum to finish it and Zaofu did exactly that, from the look of things. It sounds pretty logical, when you look at the whole picture.

    • @prismanime496
      @prismanime496 Před 6 lety +6

      Didn't I address that? I suppose I'll go into more detail.
      Yes, she had access to resources, but having the idea doesn't make the actual planning and testing, etc go any faster. If she had the idea she'd still need a crew of inventors to start planning, making tests, doing research, etc. That would take a good few years before any building would even begin to take place.
      Humans had the first serious idea about going to the moon in the 1860's, we had the resources in the 1940's (plus there was a war going on) but we didn't accomplish it until the late 60's. Research and testing for big, revolutionary projects like that takes a lot of time.
      So to suggest that the idea for this made it likely that she could have been building it for three years makes no sense for the argument. If she had the idea from her first assimilations, it would have taken weeks if not months to gather a team to start designing. Months to come up with a suitable design and begin working on a test product. By this point we're likely a year in. Then, assuming there were no problems (which would be incredibly unlikely) they would have to work on making an upscaled version of the suit. Another month or so of research spent trying to work out the physics. Then they'd have to wait for the proper resources to come in and continue the work. Assuming they had a design that they were confident in and just needed platinum from Zaofu, they'd still need a few weeks to add it to the suit and then a few months of testing before it was ready for use. The timeline doesn't add up even assuming the typical setbacks we face in new models and inventions didn't occur.
      An idea and resources doesn't mean that the process gets to skip the steps, sorry.

    The Giant Mech is honestly a little crazy, all things considered, but ah well, it makes for a fun finale story piece. I mean, even ignoring time constraints and technology leap, there's also the pure physics-defying element, considering anything that large and that heavy should just realistically collapse through any terrain and instantly get stuck, ESPECIALLY if it had two big feet instead of treads to move around. Early tanks often faced the same issue, and they were like a 20th of the mass of this crazy thing.
    So yeah, it's a bit of a shark jump, but it's a good final hurdle too, I guess.

      Personally, I still find it to be way too jarring, even for this universe. The technological leap from the equivalent of the middle ages to the early 1920s-40s in only 60 years is one thing that DOES earn an honest pass, but if someone told me there was an honest-to-god GUNDAM in *Avatar* ... it's weird. REALLY weird. Especially for an end-of-series-finale, instead of just a season-finale. I came to see "Avatar"... not Power Rangers/Gundam Wing/Insert Giant Robot Kaiju Anime Here.
      I feel as though there might have been something better planned for the finale, but given the Sponge's interference, time constraints, and budget-cuts, this was the best that they could work with (and in fairness to the Team, they DID still manage to do a great job with what they had and kind of pulled it off). But that's only my opinion. Regardless, I will never not love this series: flaws and oddities included.

    I think people who call the technology in Korra far fetched just dont remember the tech that was shown in ATLA too. The Fire Nation had their airships which even had radio intercoms installed into them, and tanks and they engineered the Drill, which also had radio intercoms. And in the Day of Black Sun part 1 you can see the mechanist driving a truck loaded with rocks for the earthbenders to use so there's even an example of a car in the original series. And you could even see lightbulbs inside of the airships and the drill. Then in the comics there are already forklifts which are seen for thre first time in the Rift. So to have Korra take place 70 years later and feature mecha tanks and trains isn't far fetched at all. And we cant compare technological advancements in a fantasy show to that of the real world, which is what I feel like a lot of people do when they criticize how far technology has come in Korra.

    • @Sondrebol
      @Sondrebol Před 6 lety +3

      Tia Blue yes but having bending would make some aspects of technology less important (hence wouldn't bother working on it) while making other developments faster.
      For example:
      The need for advanced power engines is not as important when you can shoot lightning out of your fingers. (Mako also has stated that he worked in a power plant once)
      Things like armour and mechs wouldn't be as hard in the real world when you have people who can move and form metal just like they want it to be.
      The whole platinum mech is another case, but i don't think the technologcal elements of Korra are far-fetched at all, really.

      +Sondre Bol: What does that have to do with the giant robot? If they gave some indication that the world was less advanced than ours in some ways and more advanced in others, fine, cool. But the robot is literally the only time the Avatar world somehow obtained technology that far surpasses anything we have today. It's a little farfetched to me, that's all. Especially considering it only took them 3 years at absolute most to build it

    I feel like with the first season of Avatar, when you had the biggest military/scientific power (the fire nation) make tanks and big airships in a medieval world, jumping 70 years where we have cars and trains with another superpower making mech suits and giant robots isnt that big of a stretch. Plus, when one person can bench press a mountain by themselves, an entire army could whip up something like that in no time.

      @TheJjcczz Před 6 lety +46

      Final Account The fire nation had been at war for 100 years and spent a lot of time trying and failing to take ba sing sae so the drill is easily believable. As for the Ocean Spirit they built up to it over the course of the first season with Aang's avatar states and the anger he felt. Their problem is that up until now the show has been relatively on track with the real world in terms of industrialisation, and now you have a giant robot that was never hinted at shown or teased and doesn't make sense based on what they have previously established. The Drill and The Ocean Spirt both had other events that established them as realistically possible.

    Damn set up and surprise isn't as accepted as it used to be... Imagine if people watched the original Star Wars films with today's mindset. AT-AT's would be ridiculed and so would the force. They've been working on the giant mech since before they conquered Zaofu, plus the Earth Empire is extremely militaristic and driven by advancements in technology. We just didn't see the process for the shock value. The literal same thing happened in ATLA. We had a pretty small blimp that was invented by Sokka and The Mechanic, which would be the equivalent to the mechs that were introduced in Book 1 of LOK invented by Hiroshi Sato. Then a main threat took that technology and advanced it to something beyond our world in the finale. We never saw the process of the Fire Nation extremely advancing Sokka and the Mechanics design to something of science fiction, but nobody questions it or has a problem. That was all done in the span of under a year. The double standards of the fandom make no sense to me.

    • @ralith844
      @ralith844 Před 6 lety +16

      true but you have to look at it from a realistic standpoint, we make giant blimps, hell we've had em years and years ago with less tech at our disposal so it's not unrealistic to believe that a civilization with bending could make something like it bigger and better. Plus a blimp just needs a solid support structure and a material to cover it to keep the air trapped inside. A giant 25 story robot though? most robots much smaller than that thing take years of RND, testing, prototyping retesting, teams of engineers the fact that this thing is bipedal and not on treads makes it even more unbelievable because it has to be able to balance itself or have enough weight distribution to keep balance regardless of it having a giant rail gun attached to its right arm which is unrealistic even by our standards. Even the drill isn't unrealistic because we make giant drills even before now
      do i hate the robot thing no, do i think it breaks the immersion of the show to a certain point yes

      Ralith Breaking the immersion of the show is understandable, but the point that was made here was about how fast it was created and the process of it's creation.

      the amount of time development would take to get even a working prototype of something of that scale would take years and not 1 or 2 more like 10-15 maybe with just our level of technology and even then it probably wouldn't work. but they pulled that off within 2 years when their technology is not only inferior to ours but their computer tech is even more so since this thing would need computers for it to function at all. They are probably using something similar to mainframe computers but in order to even pull off something like that you need microprocessors, mainframes would be way too slow for the calculations it would have to constantly run just to keep the thing from falling over. If you take that into consideration then just making the computer tech to put in it would take 2-5 years not even considering programming testing and actual construction of the thing.
      Even with bending this thing would take way too long to build for it to be functioning now.

      yeah but avatar has nothing close to the tech in star wars nor does it have any macguffins that makes the technology advanced enough to pull this off they just have bending which at most makes building things easier. Like using spirit energy to make a rail gun thats fine cause spirit energy is the macguffin that makes it work, but the robot itself doesn't have any macguffins like that explaining it. If they said spirit energy is powering that thing, which its been a while since i watched korra and i don't think the robot is, could be wrong, then it would be easier to accept

    Kuvira has the same attitude toward the United Republic that the Earth Queen had - accused Aang & Zuko of stealing Earth Kingdom land but no one factors in the 1 fact that debunks them. The Earth King agreed to give the fire nation colonies in the Earth Kingdom their Independence from both Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom.

      The Earth Queen factored it in, but since she already thought her father a weak man, she saw his support as nothing more than further evidence of his weakness and proof of their theft.

      Well, Kuvira voiced her hatred of the Earth Queen, publicly humiliated and dethroned Wu, and tried to have him kidnapped and/or executed. It's pretty clear Kuvira doesn't care about anything that Earth Kingdom royalty - or anyone else really - has to say. XD
