What’s the movie about?
Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser), an American adventurer, travels to the ancient city of Hamunaptra, “the city of the dead.” Accompanied by Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz), a librarian, and her brother John, they accidentally awaken Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), an evil mummy who causes chaos as he searches for the reincarnation of his long-lost love.

I remember I freaking gasped when Jonathan dropped the Book of Life. The secret of resurrection! Dropped into a well. I completely understood why Evelyn was so upset.

That book was what literally destroyed Imhotep. The cultists in the Mummy Returns were smart enough to throw it in the Scarab pit once they dug it out.
To be fair, had the scarabs not been there this scene would be so much more horrifying. Trapped in a tomb with zero way to escape left to die of either thirst or hunger would be way worse.
What if Beni returns as a Mummy himself?

such a classic scene. its always better when a character earns their death in a film instead of the writers simply killing off a character for shock value or plot convenience. Beni earns his death over the course of the film by backstabbing Rick at every turn.
Personally I’m totally cool with the main character killing off the main baddie for all the wrongdoings the baddie did. But there’s just something special about the baddie dying from some kind of divine intervention. Like if someone totally wronged me and I watched that somebody instantly get what they deserve without me being involved, I would not complain.
I remember my Dad telling me Beni's torch went out due to the lack of oxygen. I'll always remember that

Had that been the case, Beni would’ve been gasping for air. And yet he still had plenty of it to scream as the scarabs were eating him. Nope, the torch finally ran out of fuel to burn…..conveniently as he was about to be eaten.
Ironic how the gold betrayed him. The weight of the gold, usually more the better to breed the greed, led to Beni's own death.

Gold is F'ING heavy. Just a little lighter than lead. One of those pint-sized statues, for example: vast majority could not carry it very far. Only some kind of weight lifter.

Beni was an interesting character of the movie. His presence made it enjoyable

Greed. It was greed that caused his death. He was already outside. But he went back inside for more gold. And because he did, he wasn’t able to get out in time. Let that be a lesson that greed is never a good thing. Though most of the time I can’t see it causing you to end up like he did.
Kinda like gambling. It's rigged such that you win easy at first, but then got addicted to it, so you gamble your winnings in hopes of winning more, but it all goes downhill.

The funny thing is that Evelyn is actually responsible for more people dying than Beni.
Beni was serving Imhotep, who was only after the people that had his jars. However, Evelyn was the one that actually woke up Imhotep because she decided to read from the book.
Beni was a greedy coward, but Evelyn was the one who started the whole mess. They could have all went home rich beyond their wildest dreams hadn't Evelyn decided to read the book.

The way Rick said "Good-bye, Beni" sounded like he hated him anyway, because despite being one of his friends, Beni did managed to put Rick, Evelyn, Jonathan, Ardeth, and the Americans in danger when he helped Imhotep become fully regenerated and get what he needed and even left Rick to die about 3 years ago during their battle against an army of Tuareg nomads when the two used to join the French Foreign Legion.
That's because Beni was a weasel. He was motivated by his avariciousness and was willing to betray anyone no thanks to his cowardice and treachery.

Funny thing is even if the Scrabs didn’t eat him, he would’ve eventually just died from starvation if Air suffocation doesn’t take its toll first. Either way he was a Damned man surrounded by Gold.
If Hollywood wasn’t....Well.....Hollywood. That’s actually how Beni would have died. Because in actuality Scarabs are NOT flesh eaters, rather they are a type of dung beetle. So if this movie focused on reality than fiction that’s definitely how Beni would have died.

I always wondered what Rick did with the sword? Since when he left Hamunaptra he no longer took her with him. But at 1:07 you see that he throws it and it falls through a hole where the door closes.

His importance came to an end that's why he was killed off. He was meant to illustrate the consequences of greed and betrayal and he got what he deserves this bringing an end to his arc

I need an explanation about the booby trap that Beni accidentally set off. Was its function only to close down the underground chamber? Then why did the whole structure on the ground also collapse (part after 2:27)?
The shift underground probably broke the foundations and just swallowed the whole thing
Whoever built the place should have been a major historical figure, a revolutionary ancient architect. I mean just look at those massive stone blocks being tossed around when the whole place sinks. That place practically exploded with the force of several metric tons of dynamite and apparently this was all done via bronze age machinery. Sure there was probably some magic involved but the fact a lot of the place seemed to move around at the behest of levers and the like is telling.
@@Legionary219 Imhotep, ironically may have been the one to build Hamunaptura or at least design it as he was actually a skilled architect in real life.
It wasn't a booby trap per se. Somewhere along the movie it is said the city was setup so it could be entirely sunk at the Pharaoh's command. It was not a city where people were meant to live in, but a ritualistic place instead.

From what I know in the lore the scarabs are magical beetles, they're actually pieces of harmless rock until disturbed, which transforms said rocks into the hungry beetles

I wouldn’t say I hated Beni but he really reaped what he sowed here. He threw his own friend under the bus multiple times for his own selfish and greedy ambitions and now justice is served with little to no human intervention.

Even though that Benni was a coward and a bad guy in this movie I can't help but feel sorry for him when he was eaten alive by the scarabs
