There is a legend in Hongo Ward that Goto Matabee, who was active as a warlord during the Sengoku period, fled to this area and became a monk and ended his life.The area where this weeping cherry tree remains is also on the site of the Goto family's mansion. It is affectionately known locally as ``Matabei Sakura.'' It is said to be 300 years old, and is a magnificent cherry tree with a trunk circumference of about 3 meters and a height of about 13 meters. During the cherry blossom season, it is crowded with 50,000 to 60,000 cherry blossom viewing visitors.
