Embarrassed at "Outremer Week" Catamaran Training

- We're seeing a wave of inexperienced owners buying really big, powerful catamarans. We think this could be a recipe for frustration and perhaps even danger. Competency is really important to safe, relaxed operation, and it seems that Outremer shares our view on this. They invited us to Outremer Week in La Grande-Motte to see for ourselves their semi-annual training for future owners.
We also get to see Nick's acting skills in a skit any new boat owner should watch....and this is while he's dealing with a reaction to prescription medicine!

I was 1/2 convinced Outremere was going to give you such an amazing deal on a boat and you’d be back on the water in record time! Dare to dream! 😂
nah, they don't need the O'Kelly juice.
@@TheOKellysThey would if they knew what was good for them. 😊
@rachellec5703. .. I don't know.. whose two are really sneaky. .. There might be a deal being discussed in the shadows...
Vaga only had ~200k subs when they did their Outremer deal. Free marketing blew their channels/subs up, now they have ~1.86"M" subs, ~$180k p/a just in YT advertising revenue, + many other income sources & opportunities.
And to think R wasn't keen to show the world his life (still isn't), all E.
@@rws210 Grab a 2nd hand for now, get out there. But can't think of a better couple as brand ambassadors.
I just bought my catamaran today. And thank you to you guys. I've been into Boating for a while, owned a 23 foot sail boat, a 26 sail boat and a 35 foot power cruiser. Sold it five years ago with new but uncertain dreams. I took inspiration from many places large and small, mostly from within and my imagination. What really did it I think it was watching Jacque Cousteau as a kid, and a poor one living in the projects as far as the sea as once could be. But the flame was lit somewhere deep down. And along the way, channels like your helped keep the flame there. Your early videos breaking down the costs of things, including your retrofit of Clarity were amazing. Just the type of practical advice people need and value. So a thanks for adding an extra thumb on the scale. We are all stones dropped in centre of the water, we don't always see how far the ripple travels. But your ripple is traveling far and wide. Cheers. Great channel.
Drink it in my friend. Nothing better than a thirst quenched. See you out there.
Hey there! Don't be embarrassed at all! It takes a lot of courage to put yourself out there and try something new. You guys did an awesome job at the "Outremer Week" Catamaran Training! And hey, even if you didn't score that amazing boat deal, remember to dare to dream and keep believing. You both bring so much to the sailing community and the CZcams niche, and we're all eagerly waiting for your next adventure. Keep up the fantastic work, you're great ambassadors for sailing! Sending you positive vibes and hoping you find your dream boat soon. Stay tuned and keep inspiring us all. Keep rocking that fresh and realistic perspective! 👍⛵️
Great episode! Nikki is an incredible sailor whom I respect immensely so it was really fun to see you on stage with her.
I just started following you about a month ago. I saw you on another channel while at Cannes. You offer a fresh/realistic perspective on boating life. You both have amazing story telling capabilities. Very smooth but not flashy. Great job you two👏
Well thank you! Appreciate that!
My #1, much more than the chan I think ur referring to, "may" feel the same after a bit. I keep trying to asses why their channel isn't bigger, only thing I can think, not controversial, honest without sounding whiny.
With all these newbies buying huge boats there should be some real good deals in 2/3 yrs when people realize actual sailing can be real tough and isn’t travelling 1st class, even though you’re in a $2 million boat. As a long time boater, owning one can be a real pain in the butt at t8mes.
Could be dead in 2/3 years time
Some may find out in four months they aren't to hyped on sailing.
I think what you are saying is likely. It says nothing about smarts or capability....some people just don't take to it. That has always been the case and always will be...has very little to do with the boat itself (though yes, some boats are MUCH better on the ocean). The open ocean is a rather extreme environment and it is VERY difficult to portray in a video. A rather famous offshore sailing instructor said once that 60% of the people who take his course decide that ocean sailing is not for them. I'd say that kind of experience is money well-spent. So....yeh, I think it is likely you'll see a wave of sales in the next couple of years simply because there have been a LOT of new boats sold. It's simple statistics. But, as I try to make the point in the video...training and competence will give anyone a better shot of enjoying the experience.
“Would you rather have stockings full of love or stockings full of….” 🤭🤣. Thank you for continuing to provide so much education in each video. 💓
LOL
Big opportunity for someone to put training together like this for the rest of us!
Loved the "stockings full of vomit" Nick, classic!
Improv here I come. LOL
Thank you Nick and Megan your content is truly second to none and while I’m sure really tempting not to include your skin reaction footage it’s so cool that you did reinforcing your brand image as being real/practical/relatable. Good luck with what must surely be the last few weeks of boat deal shenanigans!
This sketch is so relevant given that Nikki did that wild run with la vaga to get across the Atlantic and now the trip with the O55 to make the Miami boat show. I await the videos with interest :)
Very good video. Thanks. We did O-Week last May with the AWEN people. I completely agree with you. It is a fantastic week for socializing, learning and sharing experiences with people from all over the world. Most middle aged + white people though, but I guess that is the demographic that buys cruising catamarans. Also saw your factory tour. Thanks for that one. We have O51#95 and are really happy with it now that all the kinks from the build is fixed.
Nick has an unfair advantage in everything. He's sailed around the world, he was on TV so he knkes about acting and he is an accomplished leader and captain. He shoukd be TEAXHING at Outremer week
lol, I haven't sailed around the world....but thanks for the vote of confidence.
You forgot to mention that's he's trained (masters?) in metreology!

Wonderful to see you, best wishes, this next week.
Watching the video now and thinking about how much y'all bring to the sailing community, and the sailing CZcams niche. Y'all are great ambassadors for sailing but yet still boatless. I'm praying y'all will find one soon. Nevertheless, we're still tuned in and on the edge of our seats waiting for the next video notification. Thanks for entertaining us.

Thanks guys. That's really nice of you to say. We're doing what we can with what we've got. There will be another boat and another boatload of learning opportunities we can hopefully share with you!
Sounds like psoriatic dermatitis. If so, they probably prescribed a corticosteroid. I use this stuff, and was told to use it at night, and not in the sun. Also read that prolonged use around the eyes can contribute to cataracts. (fine print: consult your physician or health care professional... may cause runny or bloody noise, shingles, night sweats, toe fungus, irritable bowel, motion sickness, wondering eye, restless leg, fear of heights, fear of flying, fear of sailing, or thoughts of buying an RV)
no, no steroids for us. Ever.

Looking forward to what boats are in your future. Maybr a forward cockpit after all. Another You Tubr couple have a foreard cockpit monohaul. They love it even with the drawback of little storage in the cockpit.
Have fun making the videos to keep us posted on your progress. Could a 52 be in the future 🎉 - we wait with baited breath. 😊
100k subs Congratulations.
Seriously though, as another commenter suggested, have you two considered doing like a two-week cruising class once per year? Kim and I are about to book a $7,000 one-week course, and we’re EXCITED to spend it.
Most, on tight budgets, would rather put that 7k to other/better use, learn while doing. Plenty in the sailing community can teach us all kinds of things courses won't. either time or liability, if people persons.
That’s a good idea! Let’s do it!
Glad to see the O’KELLYS back to making regular videos!! Sounds like you two are zeroing in on a purchase-we ALL wish you BEST OF LUCK getting back on the water in your OWN boat!!!

Whilst they sold at the right time, I'm sure no one misses her more than them
Yes, she is quite a boat. We miss her.
So, Sailing La Vagabond work out some kind of deal with Outremer, based in good part on their CZcams following. As your channel grows, you bring much of the same opportunity. One could argue your viewers are even more qualified as potential buyers based on target age, disposable income and experience. Common, we’re lookin at you Outremer! Work a deal with the O’Kelley’s!!!

I'd wait 18 months to see you in a new Outremer. Amazing vessels.
As to the facial rash/swelling. The skin around the eyes (periorbital) is very sensitive and can be your "canary in the mine" for allergies. The allergy could come from topicals like skin care products, hair products, hair dyes but also reactions to jewelery/metals in the nose, ears, lips, on wrists/fingers, belt buckles. With recurrent swelling/rash, consider food allergies, allergies to medicines. Allergic type reactions can also come from other problems brewing . . . so get checked!

Thanks for the tips!
You guys are a hoot. 😎
Previous boat ownership is definitely a huge advantage. You'd want to right size the boat to your capabilities to operate and maintain
Cool. Like the training, but haven't thought of it to much. Maybe a team get some training in while docked. Walk through scenarios. Thanks so much. No rushing allowed. :-)
Love you guys, hope you are back on the water soon, WHERE YOU BELONG. Your boat is still out there waiting patiently for you to find her.
Two weeks everybody’s waiting

Surgical super glue and butterfly strips are going to work as well as stitches in most cases, but I love the idea of more education for sailors in general and especially for people buying performance catamarans with little to no experience. At the very least, it might scare them into something more their speed to start out with. As I like to say, I’m not grown up enough for daggerboards 😜
We are right now deciding between a Leopard 42 and an Outremer 52. It will be our first boat! We love your guy's channel and watch it religiously! Hope to see you in Spring at the International Multi Hull Show in Grand Motte! Philip & Jasmina
Awwww, thanks!!!! Well, those are two VERY different boats! I'd start with the question of what exactly you want to do with the boat. Yeh, maybe see you out there!
Wow. No kidding. Very different indeed. We took delivery of our Leopard 42 in August, and it is currently at The Yacht Rigger in St Petersburg, FL getting converted to 24V, and tricked out with 3280W solar, 1200Ah Lithium @ 24V, 24V water maker, 24V Air conditioning, etc. Happy to discuss our project if it would be of any help to you.
@@GregHathorn Wow. Thank you for reaching out! Yes, you are both right they are very different boats indeed. The reason for our dilemma is short term vs long term perspective. Short term we are beginner sailors and want to build our confidence in the meds. Long term we know we want to cross oceans and travel the world. If feels stupid to buy a boat that we know we might outgrow, but it also feels even more stupid to go for a boat that is three shoe sizes too large for us. I guess going for the outremer is like getting a lambo with a fresh drivers license :D Curious to hear your thoughts.
The Leopard 42 is our second boat in 15 years. First was a monohull that we learned to sail on. Questions to consider: do you have time on the water in any boat, so that you understand the conditions you will face? How long is "long term", as that should be taken into account as well. If not for ten years, then your Outremer might need some serious refits before your long distance journey can begin, so you could start with the Leopard, then trade up. Are you wanting comfort or speed? Most catamarans will provide comfort, so the interest in Outremer must be about speed. If so, then ask yourself if you are strong enough physically and mentally to handle the demands put upon you when sailing fast. The loads on the boat, and the stresses on you, as well as your reaction time grows exponentially when going fast. To me, it came down to keeping things relatively simple and comfortable. I'm 60 years old, and I know that my wife isn't necessarily an athletic type, so we decided that the comforts of the Leopard suited us best.@@philippec9769
Personally, between only those two. If you want a luxury apartment to hang around the islands, not too much time blue water, Leopard. If you want to see the world, Outremer.
Good morning!
I can’t wait to see you putting up great sailing content, but for Kim and I your boat shopping and health issues really lined up exactly with ours. We love your videos and fully support your efforts to get back on the water while we keep searching for our first motor yacht. There’s just no real way to do the Great Loop and other inland waterways with a mast. 😢
But hey…electric sail drives and much more affordable LiFePo4 batteries make over-reliance on diesel a thing of the past, and we’re excitedly looking for a great boat with a bad engine that someone is looking to bail out of!😂
Electric sail drives are not something you want on a boat, at least yet. If you need torque and power to get out of danger in 6-8 foot seas as you get away from a breaking reef, or you run under power for 12 hours at night (or day) you won’t be using an electric motor. Dangerous for real world conditions when your life and boat really need it.
"Great Loop" make use of multiple (depends size of boat) smaller diy winch fold down furling masts (for under bridges), requires min rigging, use dyneema. Have elec/solar, but also redundancy of outboard, used for tender. I setup 10kWh Inverter + 15kWh server rack for
So it's not a 52, so it is a 55? Don't people sometimes cancel their new boat and it is already part built, leaving Outremer with a space to fill? Doesn't Outremer have a funding option? Really hope you get a Outremer, they look so fast and sexy. You both look very happy, life is short for you (and me), best to buy top end products.
Who knows....but for now, we gotta move on.
RIght move. Love the 52 but a new build price is going to be impossible to justify as used boats drop in price. We've seen these market turns before. Used boat prices will decline for at least a year - maybe two because a small number of desperate sellers will have to take any price they can get driving the price down for all. New builds will keep going up in price because of inflation. Eventually, we will reach a new supply/demand balance. A buyer with cash in hand has tremendous leverage right now. RIght place at the right time :)
@@carlnelson4413 But they have 100k+ subs, surly that means there's an Outremer sitting at the marina waiting for them? 😉
Buuu .... I was expecting you both have the Ambassador contract already signed ... let´s wait a couple of weeks for you to show us your new Toy ... Best wishes from the Penguin Region 🐧🐧🐧
Way to go outremer to give training
Maybe the O'kellys will be the first live real time video commercial on a spec boat while they wait for their new 52? Another awesome video leaving me with some wishful thinking! I do have to say that this is worse than waiting for a child to be born!!
An episode of foreshadowing? 😁
The play lead-in at 13:30 reminds me of a 3-day white water trip on the John Day River with a good friend and co-worker, another good friend, and a sport teammate I knew only on the field who my co-worker friend had invited on our trip. We took two open top canoes, as the toughest rapids were only class 3. My co-worker friend paired me with my sport teammate.
After the first day of easy canoeing I was compelled to ask my “shipmate” a question: “How much time have you spent on the water?” His reply, “What do you mean by time?” To which I explained “The number of times you’ve been in a watercraft of any type.” He smiled and said “Three. In power boats.”
By the end of the trip, we were lucky to be alive.
OMG
1. As Colin Champan said : "Light is right". I think that is also the philosophy of Outremer's catamarans.
2. Congrats for the 100K subscribers. 👍
3. And did you think about a "bridging" solution for the time to wait for a brand new Outremer 52 ?
Oh we have all sorts of plans. Stay tuned!
Hi Guys, Love following your adventurers & can understand the frustrations you have been going through. I am a factory hand at an Australian boat building company called McConaghy Boats, and whilst their history started with monohulls, and more specifically high performance racing yachts such as Wild Oats 11, a super maxi, to name just one, they also build catamarans & I was wondering if you had heard of them. They have a state of the art factory in China & a British channel called Planet Sail did a factory tour that I'm sure you would be interested in. The episode was titled "How boats are built in China" & showcases everything they build from foiling dinghies to their latest high performance catermaranes & a lot in-between. Anyway, good luck with the search. Cheeres from down under.
Oh yeh, we know McConaghy. Some really cool boats! Would love a chance to get on one! Hook us up! Cheers!
I was waiting for the "good deal on boat to be ambassadors" bit. Hey Craig, these guys have 100k+ subs, get your boss to fly them down for exposure 🤣
Is the topping lift enough to keep the right tension? Some day you always have to have the main up to give the right tension.
I can see future where in those "floating" interiors aren't so floaty anymore and fixing that would be a big challenge. Ask any Sadler owner with a double skin...
My wife and I had been on boats our whole lives (and, I had been sailing since I as a teenager), and we still had some butt clenching moments on our two year longs cruises on our 42 foot monohull sailboat. I can't imagine what it must be like to be taking a boat that big (or even bigger) cruising with just a few months of boating and sailing experience. At times it must be terrifying (unless they don't even know enough to know how much trouble they are in!)
Yeh, it's pretty amazing just how big these "first" boats have become. Says a lot about the designs that there aren't more horror stories out there.
@@TheOKellys , we were down in the Bahamas years ago when one of these rookie captains ran their brand new catamaran over a reef leaving Georgtown, because Navionics told them they could. For the rash, please consider going to a Naturopathic doctor, because the root cause is likely to be a vitamin / mineral deficiency. I had a similar experience (although maybe different from yours) and taking the vitamin biotin cleared my situation up within a week. So now, a naturopathic approach always is my first step in healing. Just some food for thought.
Appreciate it. Will look into that
Not an M.D. but just thought I'd throw this out there if you would like to try... In Europe there is a 'heavy duty' skin care cream called Locobase. It's only available at real Pharmacies, so not the 'alternative' a.k.a. snake oil ones. It comes in two grades. Locobase Protect and Locobase Repair. You'll have to double check so that it's safe to use close to the eyes, but perhaps that can be worth a try...
Maybe a good Baby Oil without perfume can help...

Are these Outremer classes only for buyers of new boats?
If somebody was buying a 5 year old used Outremer, would they be allowed to attend Outremer week?
Ask Outremer. Guessing it depends on availability. It also seems like there's a fee if you're not buying a new boat.
Come on guys just order a 52 or 55...whichever one you prefer. Then find the barefoot doctors and take over their leopard 42 while you wait. We know you have PLENTY of money and know how. Especially since you can afford Starlink Lol.
Great acting! Hope your skin rash is gone. Do i guess it right that you are getting a second hand Outremer from someone who is upgrading to a new Outremer that he will receive very soon?
I would be glad to have some feedback about balsa core: would you stay away from a boat that has a hull made with balsa core?
Not my first preference, but there is nothing inherently wrong with balsa core. The older the balsa core boat, the more likely it is you'll find rotten core somewhere, so it really matters who owned the boat and how they treated it.
@@TheOKellys thank you so much for your reply. That is my big worry. I am not sure about how it was made and maintained. It is a Schionning Radical Bay 800.
