Ordered this frm Carmax. 2013 SL550. 32k miles for $37,990. Thats fantastic low mileage. Stoked to become the owner of an ahead of it’s time luxury sports car! Fire opal red w/ tan/brown interior. Stunning! Ps -the top goes up/down in 16 seconds! Thats nuts.

@@astral_nemesis I agree! It is an incredible car. The sales sticker was in glove compartment. This was $113k new!! Got it for under 40. I think that’s the worst depreciation of a car I’ve ever seen.

I am not usually a fan of Mercedes-Benz vehicles however I do really like this one.
The design is really nice and you cannot beat the Black exterior/Red interior color combo on this car in particular.
Absolutely stunning car for the money, and their going up in the resale market, hard top gone in 2021..,hang on to it if you own one😉👍 love the 2013 SL 550❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😉👍👍👍

Great review and what a great car i actually bought a 1960 Mercedes-Benz 190sl 2 weeks ago that I'm now restoring but its a car that will never lose its style
If you can afford to blow 30k - 40k in one shot on a used car, there is nothing stopping you from dropping 10k down on a brand new SL and just making monthly payments on it, unless your credit is non-existant. To be honest, most non-AMG Benz's, and even the C63 AMG and now CLA45 AMG, is affordable to most middle class people, it just depends how bad you want it.
Every auto writer has a different story. Mine is long and very hard to duplicate, just like the rest of my life. I highly suggest trying to intern with someone in your area who does car reviews (for free), work like hell and then dovetail out on your own. That and "never give up" is my best advice. Best of luck.
Press cars are insured by the manufacturers. Basically I do my very best to return any car exactly the way it was delivered.

My dad traded his Lamborghini for this. I have to say he made a great choice. It's a sneaky super fast car.
I know he got it at Eddie Bauer because his wife works there. It's a First Ascent jacket. I'll ask him next time I see him, he's off on vacation for a few weeks.
I like very much your opinion about the desing of the car: what you said about the heritage and the way it looks, cuz most car reviewers and also mercedes fans just disagreed the design from the start, not knowing it`s past, or just ignore it`s design heritage. you are the only reviewer that appreciated it`s looks, and i think that you made some research regarding the past of this car. nice job! cheers!

It’s 11 yrs later and I got an 2013 SL63 AMG for less than half that price of the SL 550 new. Depreciation is your best friend. 😂

Couple of points to make. A~ You don't need to be in the 1% to have an SL. B~ Nothing against the current generation of SL, but the '03 -'07 have it beat for beautiful proportions. 5, 10, 20 and 40 years down the road, see which one has the more lasting beauty. I bought my first SL about 30 years ago, used for around $10k. My second one is a 2004 for which I paid under $16k... used, of course, with 26,000 pampered miles on it. When you can get a low mileage luxury sport coupe/cabriolet for less than half what a typical new car costs, you realize that all this talk about the 1% is dumb. My creed for choosing cars is to buy them for the appreciation, not the depreciation.

Unlike others, I do rather like the look of this car. And as for the rest. It's a Mercedes SL, which is close to as good as a Grand Tourer Roadster gets.

the only thing i like about the new SL is the headlight unit, it's gorgeous, but apart from that, tail light, front grill and the interior, i still prefer the old SL especially 09 SL63 with sl65 black bodykit + longtube exhaust setup. second hand 09 SL63 cost about 1/3 of the new lot. with regular car maintenance it can do 150,000 miles without any major issue( they are build to last). so unless you are the 1% who has too much money to burn, go second hand!

2 things i would have to disagree on your comments:
1) i really dont like the new front fascia..the grill is ok but NOT the headlights. sure it has design and function..but it just appealing to me as Merc
3) the clock inside looks super cheap. i mean i dont see any detail in them..i guess they look sporty.. i was hoping for more "detail" look tho and this doesnt look detail to me this pricey car.
anyways good review tho. I will be waiting for Volvo S80 review :P

As soon as I saw the interior of the car, I felt a sharp pain in my stomach because I knew it wasn't even as cheap as $50k.

When a luxury sports car has that feature where it shuts the engine off when u stop then restarts when you release the break; won't people think you were driving a manual and stalled it then restarted the engine? It just seems like that could become a little embarrassing. Especially when it happens at every light.

Great review as usual, but unfortunately the car is ugly Tom, it just is. You also don't have to be remotely close to being in the 1% to own one of these. lol The interior is nice though.
